Police investigating apparent murder-suicide in East Northport


(11/03/06) NORTHPORT - Two people are dead and another person in the hospital after an apparent murder-suicide in East Northport.
Police say 21-year-old William Murphy was despondent when he called his ex-girlfriend, 19-year-old Kristin Wenz. Wenz decided to go with a friend to check on him. Police say at some point, the ex-girlfriend asked Murphy to get some of her clothes he had, but when he returned he was carrying a rifle.

According to police, Murphy shot Wenz when she tried fleeing by car. Police say Murphy then turned the gun on himself. They say 22 shots were fired, hitting two other houses in the neighborhood as well.

Wenz's friend was taken to the hospital after being hit by shrapnel and was being spoken to by detectives.

A quiet, tree-lined residential street in Northport became the scene of a murder-suicide late Thursday night after a 21-year-old man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend and injured her friend in a hail of gunfire -- then turned the rifle on himself as he stood in his driveway.

Suffolk police said William Murphy fired at least 22 shots from a .223-caliber assault-type rifle outside the Ripley Drive home where he lived with his grandmother, killing Kristen Wenz, 19, of Northport and injuring her friend, Mallory Lindstadt, 20, of East Northport, as they tried to flee the scene in a car.

Then he fatally shot himself.

Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick, commanding officer of the Suffolk Homicide Bureau, said Wenz, struck in the head and chest, died at the scene while Lindstadt, who was in the passenger seat, was taken to St. Catherine's Hospital with minor leg wounds. It was unclear if she was struck by bullets or by flying shrapnel.

According to police, the incident occurred at 11:25 p.m. after Wenz had driven to Murphy's house, apparently because he had said he was "depressed."

"She comes over to his house because she hears he is depressed," Fitzpatrick said. "They have a conversation -- she is double-parked in front of the house, the girlfriend in the passenger seat -- and at some point she asks Mr. Murphy to go inside and get some clothing she left at the house."

But instead of getting the clothes, Fitzpatrick said Murphy came back with the rifle.

When Wenz saw Murphy, Fitzpatrick said she ran for the car and tried to drive away -- as Murphy started shooting.

"Amazingly," Fitzpatrick said of Lindstadt, "she was only struck in the legs." But Wenz was shot fatally, before Murphy turned the rifle on himself.

Two houses -- one across the street, one of the next block -- were hit by bullets.

But, police said, there were no other injuries.

Police said they have no idea what caused the conversation to escalate into a shooting.

"There is nothing obvious," Fitzpatrick said. Some neighbors interviewed by police at the scene said they thought Murphy and Wenz had dated for about nine months -- but had no idea how long the two had been broken up.

OMG, I am just seeing this now

This is just awful

So if this was north of the high school I wonder if they took any precautions, even though it was a murder-suicide, just to keep the kids in the building and not driving around the site or anything like that.
