multi vitamin vs. prenatals

Hey girls I have a question that I am hoping someone will have an answer to. My Gyno told me that I just should take a multi vitamin and said pre natals are not necesarry ...I am not sure if he meant right now or always. I checked my vitamin and it does have folic acid. What is the benefit of a pre natal rather then a multi when TTC? I understand that when you are pregnant that it may be different (my friend called her sister who is on prescription pre natals and the multi is missing omega 3 and something else) but other then that the same....

Re: multi vitamin vs. prenatals

I was told to take the prenatal and not the multi. They do have smilar vitamins, however, prenatals have more of what we need. I was told a prenatal vitamin is much better then a multi and that women of child bearing years should take the prenatal over the multi becuase of this........

Re: multi vitamin vs. prenatals

Its so hard b/c who does one listen to? Each doctor always has something different to say. I checked my folic acid on the multi and it had the right amount (don't remember right now) of what someone on here said was the right amount...lol so what's best? i am not activiely TTC just yet, so I guess it's fine for now. I told my dr i wanted to get my body ready for when I do. so he said multi and that prenatals are a waste of $$..lol
Also, what other vitamins do you take on top of a multi or prenatal?

For the most part if you are eating a healthy well balanced diets full or fruits, greenleaf veggies and fiber then a regualr multivitamin with 800mcg of folic acid or more is fine.

I went on OTC prenatals from Target and thye have been great. Easier on my stomach then my regular multivitamin and has the required amount of folic acid.

Same here - though i have started taking a folic acid supplement as well - just to increase the level of folic acid...

Is there ever too much folic acid? And if so what is that. Also what is folic acid good for?

i don't know if there is such a thing as too much....

folic acid is very important with regards to your growing embryo/baby. The exact reasons - i can quote you from the book i'm reading when i get home... :) I don't remember what it said exactly - but it's needed.

Folic acid, sometimes called folate, is a B vitamin (B9) found mostly in leafy green vegetables like kale and spinach, orange juice, and enriched grains. Repeated studies have shown that women who get 400 micrograms (0.4 milligrams) daily prior to conception and during early pregnancy reduce the risk that their baby will be born with a serious neural tube defect (a birth defect involving incomplete development of the brain and spinal cord) by up to 70%.

The most common neural tube defects are spina bifida (an incomplete closure of the spinal cord and spinal column), anencephaly (severe underdevelopment of the brain), and encephalocele (when brain tissue protrudes out to the skin from an abnormal opening in the skull). All of these defects occur during the first 28 days of pregnancy - usually before a woman even knows she's pregnant.

Re: multi vitamin vs. prenatals

this is from the american pregnancy assocaition.
http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/folicacid.html

The best way to prevent neural defects is to take the recommended 400 micrograms of folic acid daily for one month before conception and during the first three months of pregnancy. Multivitamins that include folic acid should only be used as a supplement under the care of your health care provider

but you should take ur prenatal vitamins through out ur pregnancy.

Well its good to know this stuff now! lol I just read, like someone said above, that if you have already conceived before taking the folic acid that it's too late to prevent the neural defects..so good to know! How about fish oil...should I be adding that right now?
interesting info

Someone above gave me this site...this is interesting...but all this says "during pregnancy" so it can't hurt to take it before?

it's VERY good to take them before, you really should. though i didn't see a change, they are good for your hair and nails. It's the reason a close friend of mine still takes them now, 10 years after the birth of her last child!
