Moving OOS?

ok- after years of going back and forth on the topic

we have decided to take the plunge and move to FL

we have no family left here- and I can't see myself staying here and starting a family alone

I am trying to get a timeline together

we are going to buy a place- not rent-

what did you do first?

Find a job- Jake's company has an office there and I have been getting calls for 2 years from a company in Boca

then find a house

then quit your NY job?

How much time did you take for the move? I am thinking at least a week- if not 2?????

I would love to hear how other people did it

I can also stay at my Dad's place or even my grandma's if I had to short term- (my Dad has 2 places - so one will be empty after the "season") and my Grandma goes back and forth to NY- but this is a last resort!

Re: Moving OOS?

Get a realtor to work for you down there and you do the same up here in terms of research. Plan a few long weekends where you can fly down and look at properties and you can narrow down what you are looking for.

Remember, with the way the market is right now in FL, someone would be willing to negotiate the terms of the closing with you to accommodate your move, so long as you buy their property.

You seem to have Jake's job lined up. I would also try and line up some interviews as well when you plan your weekend.

I would also suggest you take at least 2 weeks before you start your new job. You want to be able to get settled and at least breathe and let the move sink in. You also want to plan out any driving routes and get any personal things done beforehand (license, etc.)

My brain is fried today, so if you have any questions, let me know. Chat Icon

Re: Moving OOS?

You prob know my story already but...

My job was ending, our apt lease was up and DH needed a change in his job. We decided to take a chance and move to FL, which we'd been talking about doing for two years. DH quit his job and away we went. We knew we had savings to last us a while, but ended up getting jobs after being down here less than 2 months. We took a chance and it worked out for us.

When we made the decision to move, we came down to FL twice to make sure of the area we wanted and to look at apartments. We signed a lease the 2nd time we went down.

We packed our jeep and drove down in that and had our other car shipped down. The movers got here two days after we moved in and it took us about a week to unpack everything.

Since it looks promising that you and Jake will have jobs when you move down, i'd go for buying a place right away. The market is great right now for buyers... as you know.

Re: Moving OOS?

I should add- we don't have a lease up here- our landlord is awesome- and she knows we want to buy a house- so that isn't a consideration- I don't have to time that- which is great!

Do you know a realtor in FL?

I'd find one and give them your price range, etc and set up several showings for when you'll be in town. You could also have your dad or bro go check out some places for you first.

Re: Moving OOS?

found an apt using an apt hunter

quit our jobs

rented the truck, loaded up and drove down here(it was my first time ever in charlotteChat Icon )

I took out a cobra policy for myself.

in ny, we were carless, so we had to car shop asap.

Leo went to restaurant after restaurant, no hits. finally one night I was chatting to a girl in the mall who use to be a restaurant headhunter, then next morning he had 6 interviews.

He got a start date, so we decided to go on a fl vacation before he startedChat Icon

I am so glad we did not buy when we orginially wanted to. At this time, we have to stay flexible for his job situation...the only way to move up is to move around.

(we also had zero debt and savings, so we weren't too worried, but I was pregnant and wanted to be settled with a doctor quickly)

my Dad's FW used to be one- I am sure she could recommend one- or I could use the one my Dad used

I just don't want o make someone crazy just yet- we have about another 6 months till I want to start looking

the goal is to be down there by 09/09

which is when the lease on my SUV is up- I want to turn it in- and get on a plane

Jake will be driving the mustang- with 1 cat- and I am going to fly with the other

I refuse to spend 2 days in that car- I will lose it

Re: Moving OOS?

I moved the other way. From South to NY.

I found the job first (transfered with my company).

Found a rental apt (found the apartment in 1 weekend - I had arranged for 3 local realtors to lign up listing for that weekend)

Rented a uhaul with a towing trailer for my car

Moved 2 weeks after I found the apt. But the housing situation is harder on LI.

I would rent first. Not buy! You want to make sure you know the neighborhood/town you want to be in.

Re: Moving OOS?

We bought the land in Feb 2002 knowing we would be moving down just didnt know really when but at least we had the land.

At the time he was my FH and put in his request for transfer in 2003 but after a year he didnt hear anything so he made a few phone calls and his papers fell through the cracks. So in March 2004 one evening he got a phone call from one of the big wigs that told him ok you have 1 week, we will see you April 4, 2004 in RSW airport. (in 2006 after 2 yrs of misery in the airport and being passed up for 2 well deserved promotions because of airport politics he appied for a job with Verizon, got it and quit the airport)

We had friends in FL and had already a storage place set up so we just started shipping boxes down. All the big stuff FH broke down (the desk, wall unit, etc..) and he drove down to FL with my dad. I stayed up in NY for another month, moved in with my parents and would go twice a week to finish packing everything else int he apartment that we were going to be taking to FL and then shipped it all down.

I came down in May 2004. DH already had his job and I wasnt really looking too much for a job because I was getting NY unemployment and with our wedding in September 2004 I was doing a lot of travel to NY to finalize stuff for the wedding. We looked at builders and signed papers for construction July 5, 2004. I started looking for a job in October. We got hit with 3 hurricanes and their was a shortage of supplies and workers for construction so the land didnot get cleared and construction did not start until December 2004. We closed on our house July 15, 2005. Chat Icon

Re: Moving OOS?

I moved OOS first, then found a job. It wasn't the way I would've preferred it - I tried hard to find a job first, but it hadn't happened yet, and I was determined to get there anyway. So I figured it'd be easier to find one (go on interviews and such) once I was already there, and moved and found a job about 2 months later. I was renting at the time, so I'm no help in that area.

Re: Moving OOS?

DH quit his job without a new one, but quickly found one and started a month or so later in March. I continued working in NYC while he was in CT and then I moved out fully in June. We chose to rent an apartment first, now we are looking to buy.

Re: Moving OOS?

When DH and I moved back to NY he was the only one with a job lined up here. We packed up and drove out to NY, ended up staying with my parents for about 3 or 4 weeks before renting a place. I had found a job about 2 or 3 weeks into getting into town and then decided to rent in LI rather than Queens. Can't speak too much about buying a home and moving as that wasn't our situation at that time.

Re: Moving OOS?

My only advice to this is to rent for a little bit to get a feel for the area you are moving into. Especially since you will have your pick of the real estate if the current market continues.

I really don't want to rent- We know the area well- since my family lives there

I know we can do a short term rental- but I really don't want to have to go thru another move

I have moved so many times in the last 5 years- I am ready to buy a house and be settled- so we are going to spend extra time looking at areas-

if my family (dad, brother and Grandma) didn't live there- I would rent- to make sure I liked it- but I already know I like it- you know what I mean?

I know how you feel about moving (we have moved 8 times in the 6 years we have been married), but I agree with a short 6 month rental before buying - or at least stay with your dad for a good amount of time.

For jobs - we didn't have jobs when we moved out to CA (although we looked and looked) when we came back to NY, DH had his job lined up (otherwise we wouldn't have moved) Now with kids, we would never move without jobs lined up, but DH is in a position where he can work anywhere in the world, as long as he has internet and can hop on a plane if need be.

Re: Moving OOS?

We just moved to Charleston 1 month ago.

WE visited a bunch of times. We knew we wanted to live in teh city for a year and since properties here are pretty pricey we decided to rent(for $700 less than our rent in NY)

We will probably buy something next year after babies are born.

We came down for a vacation in March. Saw a house, negotiated the rent and move in date.

DH packed most of our stuff into a small U-Haul and drove down about 2 weeks before we left NY. We decided to sell most of our furniture since once you pay to move it you could afford new furniture anyway. We ended up selling a lot on Craigslist and buying two new pullout sofas(for guests) a buffet/hutch, coffee table and desk.

Dh drove down on a Wednesday to ge things set up. I came down two days later with my friend.

It so happened when I told my company i was moving and wanted to stay with them that the guy that was in this territory was being promoted so I moved into his territory and he is now my manager. It worked out very well.

My DH owns his own business and is in the pricess of starting another one so he can do that anywhere.

That's all!

Re: Moving OOS?

Found the job, then came out here again to find the house. I had my house built so I had to move into an apartment for 3 months until the house was ready, but I didn't move anything into the apartment, just a few things to get me by.

Thankfullly the job paid for the move!

Re: Moving OOS?

We have relocated so many times I am almost an expert. Obviously, the ideal situation is to find a job first. What we have usually done is scoped out several areas and maybe look at some houses in each of those areas. Then we usually narrow it down to one or two areas.

This last time we moved it was complicated becasue we also had a house to sell in a bad market. Fortunately, we were able to sell it however we had not found jobs or a house yet (expected it to take longer) so we had a moving company come and keep everything in storage in the crate and we moved to corporate housing. Then we found jobs and a house, moved here, had to move in with DH's parents for 3 weeks until we closed. Whew!! glad it is all behind us!

Good Luck!!!

Re: Moving OOS?

when we moved OOS, DH found job first, then we moved (they paid some of relocation costs). We left NY wed, got here in Thursday, unpacked Friday, DH went to work Monday.

I still don't have a job (but I was pregnant when we moved down)

We rent now and glad we are, because it has given us the time to look around and see what area we want to buy in.
