Re: Montauk Monster???

Ok, here's my take on it. I think the picture is real, but the creature is fake. I've actually read news articles about "performace art" like this. Some have fake fetuses in jars out in a public place or some just concoct what looks like an alien in a box, etc. It could very well be something like this. But I think I'm also leaning towards the viral marketing theory.

Re: Montauk Monster???

Apparently it's a dead raccoon...this seems to describe it best.
I take back my turtle theory - seems turtles don't lose their shells, they are attached and turtles don't have seperate bodies in their shells.

Re: Montauk Monster???

Definitely not a "monster" from Plum Island.... I agree with the dog theory. Can't be a turtle, since turtles don't have any real similar structure to the animal. They don't have skin under the shell, they have scales, bone structure is different, etc.

http://gawker.com/5030762/montauk-dead-monster-maybe-tied-to-cartoon-network-show

Here's quotes from some forensic scientists that make a lot of sense:

Ugh, I've spent too much time looking at that, but after a closer examination I'd guess it's a decomposing and bloated dog, possibly a bulldog, boxer or other breed with similar facial structure (compact muzzle). If you account for decomposition it seems to have paws and ears in the right places, the left rear leg is bent in a canine sort of posture, and the beakishness looks to be the muzzle cartilage minus the nose. The eyes are also set apart at the right distance for it to be a dog.

So yeah, this is a decomposed dog. Ugh.

and

As someone who has experience dealing with skeletal remains of both humans and animals (I'm in the forensic field, not a serial killer), as well as a fairly good knowledge of the decomp process, I agree with Snowden. It's a dog.

The dentition is also a giveaway -- it's got what looks like typical canid teeth, with a large canine tooth, probably 4 premolars (I can't tell from the photo, but it looks like one may have fallen out), and 2 molars on the lower jaw. The large first molar is called a "carnassial" tooth, something shared by all carnivores. The skull shape is clearly canid -- it's not a bear (size, shape, and teeth are all wrong) and it's not a cat (too big and the snout is too elongated).

After browsing through the comments on the link's website, I'd have to side with the poster who said dog.

It does look like the soft tissue decomposed away from it's nose, making it look more like beak-ish. The way it's paws are held in that position suggests that this death was not accidental.

Poor doggy.

That's what I was thinking Chat Icon

Just read the article GoldenRod posted- Now I'm really disturbed...

It seems that someone tied the poor doggies paws together and threw him in the ocean (or bay)- that's why there's a piece of fabric around the front legs. Chat Icon

Re: Montauk Monster???

I don't think that anyone tied it's paws together.
If you look at these pics...Link
You cansee that it's fur on the legs.
It could be a raccoon or a dog - the most plausible explanation seems to be raccoon, since someone posted on that sight that raccoons go to the marshes to die. Plus someone else posted pics of a raccoons skull and it matches pretty closely.
I'm not sure that it's a fake cuz a few people actually saw it and someone took it.

I love out there...and supposedly it is real--I am still a little skeptical, but it was in all of our local papers...I have no idea what it could be. Supposedly one of my DH's friends saw it, but I dont know....

Re: Montauk Monster???

My first thought was that it's fake. Someone made it and put it there to get people all riled up.

But, looking at the close-up pics it could definitely be a dog.

It could be fake but, what if the media is just saying that it's fake to not get people all freaked out about it?? Just like how they keep Area 51 all hush hush..
