Moms that had pre eclampsia and then went on to get PG again...
Did your OB put you on baby aspirin for your next pregnancy? I never heard of this, but at my annual GYN appointment (first since having DS last year), she said that when I decide to have another baby, she'll put me on baby aspirin every day due to my severe pre-eclampsia.
I know that won't prevent pre eclampsia, all it does is thin the blood I believe. I'm GUESSING this is to try to prevent a stroke or blood clot, since those are real risks with pre eclampsia, but to take baby aspirin daily?
After I had DS, she also sent me for bloodwork to check for clotting issues and thankfully everything came back ok.
I've never heard of this, so I figure I'd ask.

I had Pre E with DD1 and with DD2 the only thing they did was monitor me with a neonatologist. No baby aspirin. Never heard of that before

Your OB is right -- definitely baby asprin. I'm on it now for DS#2 and so far, so good (I'm 31.5 weeks). Delivered my now 4-year-old DS at 32 weeks after developing pre-e/HELLP at 31.5 weeks.
In addition to my OB, I also consulted with a peri and one of the TOP pre-e specialists in the country (Dr. August), who is on the medical advisory board for the Preeclampsia Foundation (she is a high blood pressure specialist whose primary focus is pre-e). All three were adament about baby asprin as soon as I got a positive pregnancy test.
I also had tons of bloodwork to see if I had any clotting issues, and everything came back as normal.
It's not so much to prevent stroke. The most important thing the baby asprin does is help the placenta develop properly (if you clot and it doesn't develop properly, it can be one of the causes of pre-e).
Good luck.

Oh wow, thanks for posting! That's fascinating actually and very useful information. Not that I doubt my OB, but I was feeling really uneasy with the idea of taking baby aspirin every day throughout my next pregnancy, so this actually puts my mind at ease.
Learn something new every day. I didn't ask my OB because I had assumed it was to prevent stroke and clots later on, probably should have just asked, lol. Thanks for sharing and lots of luck with your pregnancy!!!

had pre- e with 2 of my 3 DD's and was never put on baby asprin or anything else. just strict monitoring every week and 2 times a week sometimes. I know if i decide to have another one that they will take the precautions on a need be basis.

I had it with my 1st pregnancy. OB never mentioned anything about putting me on baby aspirin. I did not get it with my 2nd pregnancy. I also did not have a very severe case (BP was very elevated, but there was only trace amounts of protein in my urine, and the swelling I had they were not sure if it was just normal pregnancy swelling)

I developed preeclampsia at 40 weeks with my first son. I was not put on baby asprin when I was pregnant with my second. I also developed preeclampsia with my second.

Hmmm, I wonder if it depends on how serious the pre-e was with the first pregnancy and/or at what point you developed it?
I developed severe pre eclampsia at 31w5 days and had a crash c/s to deliver DS. My OB did say she had to check how severe was my pre-e and then said she'd put me on baby aspirin next time after she reviewed my file.

I developed pre-e at 39 1/2 weeks with DS1. I delivered the day I was diagnosed. I was not put on aspirin (nor did I hear of this until now!) when I was pregnant with DS2. I did not have pre-e with him. I was seen by a high risk doc throughout my pregnancy though...

Re: Moms that had pre eclampsia and then went on to get PG again...
It may depend on the serverity; I'm not sure. Although I'm not sure my case was severe -- I know they rate HELLP Syndrome on "levels" and my case was on the less severe level. Also, there was a point in which my BP improved, there was no protein in my urine and my bloodwork (platelets, etc. with regard to the HELLP Syndrome) was fine. They were about to send me home on bedrest. But then the platelets dropped again -- at that point, I had the full course of steroids for DS's lungs, so they just delivered me.
I know two other people with pre-e who were put on baby asprin for subsequent pregnancies. One got pre-e very early (too early; the babies, twins, didn't make it); the other got it AFTER she gave birth (which can happen).
Why don't you go on the message boards for the Preeclampsia Foundation? Those ladies are VERY knowledgable and may be able to give you more information.

Re: Moms that had pre eclampsia and then went on to get PG again...
I have only been pregnant once, however after I delivered my twins I was talking to my high risk doctor and he said that if I would ever to get pregnant again he would increase my dose of lovenox (blood thinner) to help prevent me from developing pre eclampsia again. So I guess blood thinners do something to help prevent it??

Re: Moms that had pre eclampsia and then went on to get PG again...
i had pre-e and developed HELLP and delivered my at 33w1d. unfortunately i was already on baby aspirin and lovenox/heparin since before i was pregnant as part of my IVF protocol. so for me i was already on it everyday but it didnt prevent pre-E/HELLP. i do have some clotting and immune issues though that played a role in my developing pre-e.

I didn't know there was a preeclampsia foundation I'll have to check that out.
The possibility of developing pre-e again next time around makes me want to know as much as I can to help prevent it.
