Re: Mommies with dogs

I didn't read the story on NFR, but no, I never leave the baby unattented with the dog.

We had an incident last year where the dog nipped at my stepdaughter (because she tried to move him when he was sleeping) and she wound up having to get a few stiches near her eye. It was an accident and she had been told many, many, times (she was 10 at the time) to never touch the dog when he is eating or sleeping. But...she did, and this one time, he snapped at her. It was such an ordeal. She is totally fine, and still loves the dog and he loves her, and he didn't do it on purpose.

DD likes to pet the dog, but I get afraid to get her too close because she grabs his fur because she doesn't know how to pet him nicely...and I'm afraid he will snap when she grabs too hard, not because he's being vicious, but because she hurt him unknowingly.

Anyway...I know as she gets older, they will be good friends, but for now, I try to make sure he is not too close if DH or I are not there. But...as you can see, he loved her from the very beginning.

Here he is, doing tummy time:

yes.
but i have two 4 1/2 pound dogs and they pretty much keep their distance from Maddie since I think they've realized she could basically beat the crap out of them.

For a minute or two, always within hearing range.

I know dogs can be unpredictable, so I would never leave them alone for long, but at the same time, I feel I know my dog well and know what his limits are.

Maybe that's naive of me.

same here....My dog is GREAT with the boys and I trust him, but sometimes you never know, so I should be more caustious, but I am always in the other room

Re: Mommies with dogs

I don't have any dogs- DH is allergic unfortunately so we can't have any animals in the house. But I grew up with dogs, and my mom and in laws have dogs.

Ryan stays at my mom and dad's house a couple days during the week. My mom has a gate separating the dogs from Ryan and they stay most of the day in the dining room area (big room). THere are 3 of them and they are probably the most loving and gentle dogs you have ever met, but, none the less they are still ANIMALS and you can never predict what an animal might do. Ryan is never left alone if they are roaming the house or eating, etc.

If we did have a dog I would make sure to not leave the 2 alone. Ryan is still little and learning to "do nice" with the doggies. But, he still might touch them in a way that hurts them which could trigger them to nip, etc.

I love dogs but I could never trust one 100% when it comes to my child.
