Mommies whose DC needed glasses at a young age

So at Nicholas' 15month check up the ped. was concerned about his one eye turning in so we took him to the eye doctor and he needs glasses. Aside from coming to terms with this I have no idea how he is going to tolerate wearing them. I foresee a long road ahead and was hoping anyone who went through this had some tips on how to get him to keep them on. TIA!

DS was a little older, almost 3, when we discovered he needed glasses. Same scenario as your son, his right eye turned in quite a bit. Not only did he need glasses, but we have to patch his good eye for 2 hrs a day. There IS definitely an adjustment period, but nothing a little bribery, usually involving candy, didn't fix. NOW, he asks for his glasses if he doesn't have them and NEVER goes without him b/c he can finally see. The big thing is that I think it looks "weird" to them when looking through their glasses for a while only b/c it's not how they are used to seeing. But, it doesn't take long for them to get used to and want/need to wear them. Hang in there. Ease him into them gradually if he gives you reistance at first.



And for good measure, here he is at 4 1/2, looks perfectly natural in his glasses now...

Not a BTDT, but I worked for an eye doctor for a long time. There are plastic c-shaped attachments that will go onto the end of your DC's glasses. Those will keep them on his face. Once a baby/young child realizes they can see better with them, they don't pull them off.

DS has had glasses since he was 1. At first he would pull them off from time to time, but once he realized he could see better, he only pulled them off when he was tired or mad at me

Over time, he didn't pull them off at all anymore. We always got the ones with the cords that wrap around the back of the ear. Some brands are def better than others. His 2nd pair of glasses we also got transition lenses that turn into sun glasses outside. It was an extra $100, but has been so worth it!

DS has had glasses since he's 11 months. it took about a month to get him to not rip them off his face. now at 2 he wakes up asking for his glasses. it took me longer to come to terms with it than him. i definitely recommend the glasses with the cables behind the ears. also if anyone is around your DC that wears glasses, teach your DC not to take off their glasses.
