MOLD in basement!

We saw this house! I am in love. Bad and cheap remodel but LOVE the potential of the house and overpriced. The lot is AMAZING. The size I want.

BUT... there is a HUGE BUT!

There is mold in the basement and they tried to cover it up. We saw the house twice and it had rained. Well, the smell was so bad. Fans were running the basement. They had put a dehumidifier directly in the shower stall to drain water. They even REPAINTED on an area I had noticed water damage 3 days earlier.

DH thinks if they are covering that... there is no telling what else.

We do have a young child and he is finally growing out of baby asthma and no longer needing nebulizer tx everyday.

I am so disappointed.

We walked out.

But I keep thinking about that house. It was just how I had envisioned it.Chat Icon

sounds like you have 2 issues. 1. They have a water problem. Either they can't figure out where the water is coming in, they can't afford to fix the issue or they don't want to fix the issue 2. MOLD. Mold is very tricky. There could be even more mold behind the walls that you can't see. Mold is expensive to get rid of and if you can't fix the issue where the water is coming in you will always have the problem.

Tough call. The engineer would probably uncover even more when the inspection is done.

I would walk away but that is me. Anything having to do with a water or mold issue is a deal breaker for me.

Re: MOLD in basement!

I know! We had mold in my downstair bathroom because of a leaking upstairs bathroom. It cost me $5K for a 5x8 bathroom to fix the mold. It was fixed by professionals who came coved from head to toe, sealed the rest of my house and use special air vacuums and chemicals to get rid of it and sealed everything.

I would walk away but maybe you could have a contractor come and look at it. I know some construction companies (can't remember the name) will come and give you estimates for things wrong. I had an engineer do my home inspection and he was wrong on everything.

Re: MOLD in basement!

Is there plenty of other space through out the house that could make the basement sealed off from everyone until you fix it? Or will it be used as part of your living space. IF you were to dive into this (and that is a BIG IF) are you willing to accept that this could be a possible basement redo from head to toe? I would talk to your REA about it and see if you can get $$$$ off since they seem to know about it and are unwilling to fix it. Then work from there! How does your DH feel?

The basement is completely empty. They called it finished but it would have to be all gutted out.

DH is worried there is too many "what ifs" and the "unknown".

Re: MOLD in basement!

I would pass. Bigger problem would be if you could not fix the actual water entry, which could be costly and sometimes its an impossible fix when there are high water tables. I amsorry you loved it but I think I would def pass.Chat Icon

It's was a lot of work but I loved the whole feel of the house/yard or potential of it.

More houses on the schedule.
