Michelle Williams is speaking out for the first time since ex Heath Ledger’s untimely death January 22.
“Please respect our need to grieve privately. My heart is broken," Williams, 27, said in a statement released on Friday by Ledger's rep, Reuters reports.
"I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father," Williams continued in her statement.
"All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day. His family and I watch Matilda as she whispers to trees, hugs animals, and takes steps two at a time, and we know that he is with us still. She will be brought up with the best memories of him," Williams' statement concluded. (See photos of Ledger doting on his daughter here.)
When Williams first learned about his tragic death, "she cried and screamed as soon as she heard," a source on the Swedish set of her latest film, Mammoth, tells Us Weekly in its new issue today, now on stands

That is absolutely heartbreaking I'm sure it would NEVER be easy, but the fact that Matilda looks just like him must make it that much tougher for her & their families (as she mentions)

no matter what happened between them---he was the father of her baby---and that is something that has to be breaking her heart---that her daughter will never truly know her father.
i wanna cry for this little girl. cause i'm sure in 20 years the paparazzi will be hounding the "daughter of a the late Heather Ledger" and seeing if she is the next generation's Paris or Britney.
i hope the paparazzi and news outlets just leave them alone

OMG - she truly is!
I am glad that she took the time and didn't respond right away - and her statement, I suspect, will mean more to her daughter in 20 years than anything else.
