menu/timeline... enough?
I just had a surprise party for my husband. 50 people. Guests arrived at 6, birthday boy at 6:30. I got there at 5:30 with some friends to decorate, bc I wasn’t allowed to get there prior to that time. It was plenty of time. Our party was only three and a half hours though. I think 5 hours is a long time for just passed apps. Especially if you’re doing it around dinner time. Can you add Like 2 or 3 buffet trays in there?

I'm just wondering why you, and not the venue, are determining this timeline. This is their business, they must know what usually works best. What do they suggest?
I won't comment on the type of food or length of the party because that's a done deal. But I do think you're serving the dessert way too early. The venue should know all of this though. The way you're trying to set this up, I guarantee that people are going to start leaving after the fireworks.
I would also give yourself at least 45-60 minutes to set up decorations, as long as the venue will allow it.
ETA. Is it unlimited passed apps? Or are you paying per tray?

Re: menu/timeline... enough?
Did you create this timeline or did the venue? I think you need a few more heavy hors d'oeuvres and another station. I would not choose salmon.
It might be a little confusing to guests with the half hour alcohol limited to wine and beer and then the switch to alcohol by consumption.
Are you serving a signature drink?
How old are the children and what are the food options for them?

If you’re inviting people to a 5 hour party during dinner time, you should serve a meal IMO. Definitely order more food as those apps are small and not filling. Why are you only allowing beer and wine in the beginning and then open bar the rest of the night? You should do open bar the whole night.

Re: menu/timeline... enough?
I think a lot of people are used to the typical 5 hour catering hall sit down party. I think that’s a regional thing, I don’t think people in LA would necessarily be expecting that. I think cocktail parties ar hipper and more fun, personally. I’m turning 40 soon and when asked what kind of party I would want, I always answer “not a Sweet 16.” BUT since you are starting at dinner time, I would add another station, double check that the passed apps will be plentiful and come out frequently, and be done with it. Have fun! You know your crowd best. You know what they say about opinions....;).

Re: menu/timeline... enough?
5 hours is a very long time for a party in general, especially for one that only serves appetizers. Your guests might leave early to hit up a drive thru. If you want it to be a cocktail party it should be much shorter, otherwise you should have more food choices buffet style. It's very random to just have a short rib station. Offer other options. Also it's odd to offer just beer and wine first then switch to consumption after. You have to up the food or people will ***** lol also have something for the kids. Not many kids eat endive.

Re: menu/timeline... enough?
I will suggest adding another station and moving both stations up to when the passed apps happen.
Like other suggest, I would also allow and hour for decorations. Even if you are done early, atleast you aren’t setting up when guests arrive. My family for the most part are usually a late crowd but then you have older people like my uncle who will be 15 min early lol.

Also want to say do you have anything going on during the 5 hour party? Is there entertainment? Music? Fortune teller or having speeches or a roast? Only asking bc it's a long party and wasn't sure if everyone will stay after you serve the cake and coffee. Feel like most people leave once desserts are out.
there will be a DJ and a dance floor the restaurant is across the street from disneyland and there is full view of the fireworks at about 9pm.
Wow! That sounds perfect then. You know your guests so go and enjoy. For DH's 40th we did a whole beer theme party. DH wanted lots of apps like pretzels, mini hotdogs, sliders, cheese, crackers, lots of chips, dips, etc and a ton of alcohol. Everyone said I needed more food, but it was perfect for our guests. Have fun!

I was thinking the same thing. I think the timing is what’s throwing everyone off. If the party were later, no one would bat an eye.
OP, I think you’ll be ok with another station or 2. I know when I got married a few years ago, having a “Late night snack” was a big thing. Maybe something like that out at the end of the night? I’m sure the restaurant could provide a tray of something (people will eat anything when they’re drunk) that will help stave off any late night hunger.

I agree with this. It also depends of the kind of party you want to have. I find a party with only appetizers to be more casual and fun. For my 40th, it was only appetizers. It started at 6:30, and I don't remember what time it ended, but it was almost 11 and few people left. One thing, though, I would add another station, or add heavier appetizers, like sliders. If adding another station, I wouldn't do salmon, but you know your guests better. I also had a DJ, a mariachi band and people were dancing and talking... so a sit down dinner wouldn't have worked on that scenario.
