Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
The teacher gave this pattern to the class:
The first term is 5 and the rule is add 4, subtract 1. Each student says one number. The first student says Five. Victor is tenth in line. What number should Victor say?

Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
32? the way I read the rule (add 4, subtract 1), is that if the first term is 5, then the second would be 5+4=9-1=8. Unless I am misunderstanding the rule.. lol

Re: Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
I don't understand the language of the question.
What does "iorst term" mean? and each student says a number? They say the next number in the pattern, starting with 5?
so the first kid says 5, meaning 5 is the answer to the answer to X +4-1? so the patter starts with 2? 2+4-1=5
So what is the next kid supposed to do? start with 5 as his X or start with 3, because the previous kid started with 2?

Re: Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
32? With the rule (add 4 minus 1) each student needs to add 3. Then if the first student says 5, the second would add 3 then it would be 8, then 11, so then it'd be 31 for the 10th student

Re: Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
I am so glad I am not the only one who was confused with this question. This was part of my 4th grader's math homework last night and I could not arrive at any of the given answers...my head hurt trying to figure it out so we left it with a big circle around it.
The answer was 21..I could only get 32!!
So for those two smarty pants LIF'ers who got 21 pleaaaaaaaasse tell me that you are either a math teacher or super math whizz! and that mere mortals were right to be confused by this.
Is it summer yet when I can look forward to no math homework for 10 weeks!!

Because you were looking at the rule as take the number of the student before you and add 4 and then subtract 1.
Where in reality the rule was child one starts with 5, child 2 adds four so child #2's number is nine. Child #3 takes child #2's number and subtracts one - so child #3 has 8 and so one.

The way this SHOUDL read:
Start with the number 5.
Add 4.
Subtract 1.
Then use THAT number. Add 4, subtract 1.
If each kid uses one number,What is the number the 10th person comes up with?
Kid 1 =5 Kid 2 = 4 Kid 3= 1 Kid 4 =8 Kid 5 = 4 Kid 6 =1 Kid 7 = 12 Kid 8 = 4 Kid 9 = 1 Kid 10 = 15
FLUCK this stupid ass common core bullshizz that helps absolutely no one.

Re: Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
the grammar of the question is wrong. and then it repeats that the first number given is a 5.
no wonder everyone is confused.
thank goodness that DS is done with this level of school. it would drive me bonkers.

Thanks for this explanation. I would have never and did not interpret it this way. The best thing about common core is if I gave these same instructions to people at work I would be dinged on performance for being a bad communicator.

Re: Math Problem for your sunny afternoon!
I used to be a software programmer, so to me it makes sense. As described by a few people so far: The first term is 5 X=5
The "rule", or pattern is "Add 4, Subtract 1" The pattern is assumed to repeat, since there are multiple kids, so the rule is X+4-1+4-1+4-1....
Child 1 says "5" 5+4 = 9 9-1 = 8 8+4=12 12-1=11 11+4=15 15-1=14 14+4=18 18-1=17 17+4=21

I did it the first way I explained. When you said what the answer was I was able to see it the 2nd way. But I would never have reached the correct answer the first time.

Ahh! That makes sense, but the language wasn't clear. I assume the kids are taught math this way, so they are expected to know what these things mean, but I feel liek this isn't really teaching math. It is teaching comprehension in a way, ( the way word problems usually do), but it is like learning to comprehend a different language. Is this supposed to help children with STEM, b /c things are phrased the way they are in computer science? The language was so spare; it seemed like something was missing.
