Maternity Leave
I get 12 weeks off under the FMLA without pay, because it is without pay I will only be taking 6 weeks off (Can't afford not to have my paycheck coming in). I can collect short term disability for 6 - 8 weeks but that is only $170 a week - which is NOTHING. When I had my DD 20 months ago, I took 3 1/2 months off (we had banked money so I could take time off), but this time around I will only be taking 6 weeks off.
Anyway, the point of this post is I'm curiuos is anyone else only taking a minimum amount of time off?? I was talking to someone tonight about it and they couldn't believe I was only taking 6 weeks off. I tried to explain that I couldn't afford to take off anymore time and they said that it wasn't fair to the baby...HELLO, I don't think it would be fair to the baby if I couldn't pay my mortgage either and we lose our house!! UGH I just don't get people.
Thanks for letting me vent.

Re: Maternity Leave
I also plan on starting to work a few days within weeks of her being born.
I'm probably only going to be subbing so the hours aren't bad and the school is close to my parent's house so I will be able to come home during my off periods.

Re: Maternity Leave
I used up 10wks of my FMLA during my pg due to complications so I can't afford to take an extended maternity leave. I plan to go back at either 6 or 8wks. Wish it could be longer but things just didn't work out that way.

Re: Maternity Leave
I have the same EXACT situation to a T as your company. They told me to forget the short term and use 6 weeks sick/vac/ and holiday. When I told outsiders they said "what are you crazy"...you'd be giving up 170 to lose YOUR time. So now people are telling me I should give up my salary for 6 weeks and collect the 170 short term disability and like you said stay out 6 weeks instead of 12. Maternity leave s@x! You would get paid more if you broke your ankle on the job the week before you went into labor.

Re: Maternity Leave
Im in the same situation. I will only be taking 12 weeks off, and if I make it back in September, I will get paid for 40 of those days. If I take more than 12 weeks, I have to pay for my own medical isnurance

Re: Maternity Leave
People always have an opinion about everything. You gotta do what you gotta to do...and if thats only taking 6 weeks off...thats it. I'm sorry that people make you feel bad about it. I'm in the same boat. If my paycheck doesn't come in, the mortgage won't get paid. Luckily, being a teacher and having a December baby allows me to stay out a few extra weeks without it affecting my pay or sick time. But if I didnt have the days in my bank, I'd have to come back. I girl I work with had to come back after 1 week!!! She needed a Dr.'s note but didnt have a choice b/c she had to pay the bills.

Re: Maternity Leave
Well, with Caiden I could only take 6 weeks off and that was unpaid. I worked for a small company and they didn't offer maternity. I got the same response from people. They really know how to make you feel bad. Don't let them get to you I know it's hard. We couldn't afford for me to take off any longer either. It's unfortunate, but you do what you have to do. We can't afford it this time either. I'm probably only going to be able to take off 6-8 weeks off as well. I can't even use short term disability. I wish I could, but I'm not signed up with any company for that, and I don't think that NC offers it automatically.
Anyway, good luck to you and don't stress over what other people say. They're not paying your bills!!!

I am not preggos yet but if you gotta do what u gotta do then do it. dont let anyone tell you what to do. The mortgage has to get paid or you wont have anywhere to live. People just dont understand. Me and my hubby have three houses (yes 3 - they are investments) now you tell me if I will be able to stay at home for more than 8-12 weeks , NOT!

Re: Maternity Leave
Agree with everyone, you have to do what is right for you, and BTW it is totally fine for the baby, he/she will be so young it is not like he/she will be missing you, at that age they just need sleep and food, not your personal attention, when they hit 8 months that is when they realize your absence. If anything, i am concerned that it is not fair for YOU, because I know you will be so tired, but I'm sure you will make it work
Hey, wannA buy one of those houses from Posh Tots and put it in our backyard and then you don't have to work at al because your cost of living will be so small

Re: Maternity Leave
I started back at work (a few hours here and there) when Ella was only 3 weeks old. Now I'm working up to a few days a week, but some days I take her with me. Today she's with DH.
I have my own company, so I can't be gone for months.
You'll make it work

Re: Maternity Leave
6 weeks is more than I plan on taking. I'm only going to be out of work for 2 weeks, atleast that's the plan. I have my own dance studio and I teach all of the classes myself. I have the summer off, but I'll be going back to work in mid-September, and my due date is Oct. 20. I'm going to have to hire an assistant to come in with me and then cover classes while I take 2 weeks. I can't really afford to pay someone for any longer than that. Fortunately I only work part time, so I'm hoping it won't be too bad. Mondays for 2.5 hours, Tuesdays for 4 hours, Wednesdays for 5 hours, and Thursdays for 7 hours.

I HAVE to use my vacation/sick time - that isn't even an option, but I can still collect the whopping $170 short term disability! Maybe if I get lucky I'll fall down and break my leg before going into labor

Re: Maternity Leave
Anyone who is NOT prego yet might want to look into private disability insurance that pays up to 80% of your salary, up to a max. amount. It is worth the cost of the insurance to have the maternity leave coverage.

Re: Maternity Leave
Hi - I agree with the PPs, they should mind their own business.
I'm curious though, why do you only get $170/week? Is that the max? Is that common with STD?
I read my STD policy and it said 60% pay for 6 weeks for vaginal delivery and 8 weeks for C-section. Am I missing something else or does my work have a really good STD plan?

Your job probably carries (pays toward) additional short term disability - lucky you. Mine is straight NYS Short Term Disability.

Re: Maternity Leave
I elected not to do FMLA for career reasons. I am scheduled for 6 weeks totally off, among which every day I am late to deliver I lose a day with baby. So if I am 2 weeks late...
After that I get 2 weeks where I work 1 day a week and might get called in for backup at any time.
I had a friend who took 3 days off and had to make them up. Everything was fine luckily it was a natural delivery!
Don't worry, everyone has an opinion - do what's right for you!
