Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
Like the others said, the most important thing is for you to stay calm. You can fall to peices once he goes to surgery, but for everything leading up to it, try your best to be relaxed, calm and upbeat. Your DS has no reason to be scared, he has no experience with this, so don't give him any reason to be. Use your DH for the support you will need.
Alex had minor surgery (eye stent) but it was difficult getting through the anesthesia. I'll tell you this though, it was DEFINITELY much harder for me than it was for her

Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
I'm sorry you have to deal with this....I know its hard, my DS is having surgery with general anesthesia in 2 weeks---somedays I think about it, others I try to forget about it---I am also the most concerned about the anesthesia, but I know he will be okay. I keep telling myself he will never remember it and I am doing the right thing for his health!!

Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
My son had surgery twice, once when he was 2 for a lazy eye and just in March when he broke his elbow. Both times I was with him when they put him under...its better for them that they see you. It usually calms them and they don't come out of it all agitated. Its worse for you but they wont even remember.

Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
It is so hard watching your child go through any distress. I wish you peace and comfort during an emotional time, but please remember - he can feel your anxiety over this. You want him calm and know Mommy is okay with this. My niece and my nephew have had the surgery done - my nephew's was just as you have described. Everything went find - I hope you take comfort in that

Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
I'm so sorry...poor baby
I watched my DS go under when he was 6 months old for a frenumlectomy. This was a very simple procedure so his time under was short. But to he honest, by the time we got ourselves dressed in scrubs, brought him to the room, sat him down and he went under with the mask, it was so quick!!! Then they escorted me out and the nurse was consoling me and yet I was like "ok, that was it?" I was much more worried than I needed to be but it is still so scary. Honestly, my approach to these scary things is that when the time actually comes I put on my "i mean business" face and just do it and come out of my trance when it's all over. That's how I cope.
He's going to be just fine...but I know it is so nerve-racking!!!

Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
Hang in there. One of my boys had surgery at 6 months to correct something with his penis. I am not sure how the hospital will let you be with you kid, but Winthrop allowed one of us to walk in with him and put him on the operating table. They then put the anesthesia via mask, before i could even see him going totally out a nurse wisked me right out of there. I was pretty hysterical, but it was not as bad as I had been dreading. The worst part was sitting around while the surgery was happening.
They then allowed us to go into the recovery room with him as soon as he woke up and to sit wtih him on my chest. They warned me he would be hysterical when he woke up as most babies are and he was, but it felt so good to see him upset over so many people poking and proding him.
It's not a fun experience and it's hard to handle, but I will tell you the anticipation of the surgery (we knew for over 5 months he would need it) was a lot worse for me playing it over and over in my head.
And he went home none the worse aware. He really fell right back into his routine when he got home.
Feel free to FM me with any questions!

Yes, it will be hard but you will be strong because you know you have to as a mother. You know you will be because you know DS will need your strength, comfort and presence.

Re: Looks like DS needs surgery
DS had surgery for hypospadieus at 6 months old. I was terrified of him going under anestesia, and cried after I dressed him in his little hospital gown and then they took him away ( The place that did the surgery even took our pic w/ him in his gown and gave us a framed photo magnet of the pic to take home! It's still on the fridge, 3 years later!). I was a wreck the whole surgery and my stomach was doing flips; never the less it was over before I knew it and my little man was ok! I'll pray for a speedy recovery!
