Long Distance Drive With Kids?

Any ideas when to leave for Buffalo with a 4 year old, 3 year old and 15 month old? We have the Odyssey with tv but the 15 mos old hates tv older ondes love it. They are all early early risers and go to sleep early. Not sure whether to leave like crack of dawn or bedtime or late afternoon. Thoughts suggestions appreciated.

Re: Long Distance Drive With Kids?

I would leave late afternoon or evening. I drove with my DD to Florida (in one dayChat Icon with multiple drivers), and we bought lots of new music for her like the Backyardigans, stickers to put on paper, tons of snacks, a soft ball, dvds, etc. and she was an absolute dream both ways! She slept most of the way, to be honest. We left late afternoon and by the time she was getting sick of being in the car, it was her bedtime and she conked out. I remember her sleeping until like 10am the next morning because she was so comfy from the motion of the car.
I love road trips and having the kids now hasn't really made it much harder, just more planning. Good luck!

The only long distance drive we've done with them is to Virginia. We always leave around bedtime, because they pass out for the entire (8+) hour drive. Otherwise there is crying, whining, and it seems like we stop for something every half hour.

Re: Long Distance Drive With Kids?

I just did a 7 your drive to Maine with the boys (22.5 months & 1yr old) on Thursday evening. We left as soon as ny youngest went to bed, 7pm & the older one was tired yet not ready to sleep. He watched Mickey Mouse until 830-9 when he eventually fell asleep.

We made it here in 7 hours (lost time due to construction) but both boys slept the entire trip. My youngest transferred to the pnp with no issues. My older one woke up when we got here but went back to sleep within an hour.

If they sleep in the car I absolutely recommend bedtime!
