Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?

I'm torn.

We are 90% sure we are going to Disney with a group of friends in Jan.

Heres the thing...

Driving means a long time in the car for 3 kids, lots of potty breaks and an overnight stay ( which is OK , we had a SC trip planned for Sept. we might push off to Jan if we drive) .. Gas $, Toll $, milage on the Van.

But, we "can" stop whenever, we can plan how to keep kids happy, we have our own car vs needing to rent one or not use one there.

Flying...We have to purchase 3 RT flights and use a big chunk of vacation money , we have to each hold a baby on our laps, and have no hands free to help Noah. We have to pack accordingly and wait on luggage, pray we dont lose any etc...and it could be two hours of hell. BUT ITS ONLY 2 HOURS Chat Icon

So its basically boiling down to $$ and possible 2 hours of hell to a "bit" more comfort but a WHOLE lot of time in the car...

Opinions? ( TIA!!)

BTW - Noah will be 3 and 1/2 and the twins will be 15-16 months.

Drive Drive Drive!

It's NOT only 2 hours. the flight is a few hours, getting to the airport, checking in, packing all the crap you need for the airport, for the flight, etc... getting the kids through security, getting off the plane, picking up luggage, etc.

I'm a little partial though Chat Icon

I'd try to make the flight work...I am all about the least amount of time so in my mind the 2 hour flight is better than the car ride...even with all the other things that are included with that choice.

Put Noah in the middle so that he is sandwiched between both of you and load him up with games and snacks.

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?

If you have one other adult (other than you and DH) going with you in the car... drive. If not, fly.

We drove from FL to NY last month with my in-laws and DD who was almost 11 months at the time. I have to say, she was an angel most of the way, but it took a lot to keep her entertained when she was awake, especially the last leg of the trip. Between us 4 adults someone was able to play with her, change out a DVD, give her a snack, bottle, toys, etc. while one of us drove and two of us slept.

Totally not the answer to your question, but Disney tickets increase in price tomorrow, so if you are pretty sure you are going, you could buy your tickets now and save some money!

To answer your question, I would fly, but that is because I can't imagine my kids in the car for that long...going to my MILs house yesterday my DD asked when we would be there about 6 times and she lives less than 3 miles away!

I would kinda agree with this, the time is really making my decision to just fly except for the money issues. The money to fly and rent a car down there( which I feel like for a week+ stay really needs to be done) ...is SO much money. Way over $1000...that could be used for a lot of nice dinners, souveniers, park admissions etc ....

We drove to florida with Ava when she was 15 months old and had a BLAST! We take a lot of long car rides with her to DC and Baltimore and it's not as bad as you'd think, but then again, we love a good road tripChat Icon So I vote for drive!

Are you staying on Disney? If so no need to rent a car.

We went to Disney for the first time last February and drove with my three kiddos. We left at night at about 8 /9ish and the kids were sleeping by the time we hit Queens. They slept the whole way until we hit North Carolina in the morning and then we stopped for breakfast / potty break. We didn't stop to sleep, but my dh and I took turns driving. During the day we had the DVD in the minivan and lots of snacks / games that kept them entertained. I was surprised at how well it worked out.

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?

Jetblue has flights for $79 from jfk to orlando in Jan. So that would be about $540 r/t for 3 seats. Driving and paying for gas, food, hotel would probably equal out to the same.

If you're staying at a Disney hotel you really don't need to rent a car. They have free pick up/drop off from the airport, bus service, monorail, boat to/from the parks and other hotels. Or you could rent a car for a few days and return it early to save some money.

well for me it depends on how the kids are in the car. Are they good and quiet or restless and scutchy?

My oldest was the best kid ever in the car and at 10 she stills is.

My 2 middle are PITA's in the car hence why I'm stalling our annual trip to montalk to see the sunrise.

We are going to Disney and flying. I'd rather play inn traffic than do a huge road trip with Ayla and Amelia. I think I'd open the door and roll out. Chat Icon
So theyn plane it is for us even if it meant a chunk out of the vacation money.

However, if your DC are like my oldest and youngest than drive and save $$$.

If it were me, I would fly or not go. Chat Icon But of it's going to use up a large part of your vacation money, I'd probably not go and wait until the twins are older and can enjoy it. I would either save that money for next year or use it to buy essentials that you really need.

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?

Concidering it could be "hell" in both situation I would take the 2 hour flight in a heart beat. Otherwise it could be 11 hours of hell.

I thought it might be an issue with DS but he completely surprised us and behaved so well in the plane.

I did not see anyone with 3 kids but there were a few families with a toddler and a baby/1 yo or so age group.

Re: Drive or Fly To Disney With 3 kids?

Tough call - totally see both sides of the coin - so I don't really have an answer. I'd tend to sway more toward driving because, while it is a longer time, it's less money, and you're in control. You can stop and go at your own pace.

The other thing to think about is that you said a January timeframe. Should we have some form of snow around that time, there may be some delays on the plane or on the airport. Whereas if you're driving, you can stop if the weather gets bad, or reschedule travel dates accordingly.

Just something else to consider.

Exactly what she said! Chat Icon

I just flew out to see my mother, alone with two kids 4 & 2. And, it takes two planes to get there, both about the same amout of time(3hrs). We did great and I would do it all over again tomorrow. Seeing the boys' faces when they saw Grandma (including mine too!) Was well worth the hassle! Going through security was worse than the flights in my opinion!

So fly and think of their face when they get to Disney! Enjoy your trip!

Definitely Fly. The drive will wipe you out & you need to save ALL of your energy for Disney.

You would only have to buy 3 tickets. Which I think wouldn't be so bad.

The downside is bringing the 3 cars seats and renting a car which can get expensive.

She might not need a rental car if she stays at Disney hotel with magic express. The shuttle is free from and to airport

Just an FYI- if you fly, you and DH will not be able to sit in the same row with Noah. The number of oxygen masks overhead are equal to 1 per seat + 1 extra to allow for 1 lap baby.

One of you will have to sit in a seperate row, or PRAY that there is an empty seat in your row.

Even with that, I'd still rather fly. Southwest runs great deals to Orlando all the time.

Yes, that's true! I love Southwest. No bag fees and you will most likely get 2 rows together
