Re: Living in the Town of Smithtown - gimme the scoop!

We just moved from Queens to North Smithtown. I have 3 small children (5, 4 and 20 months). I have not seen many children in my area. We love the area, but I am a little concerned with my kids making friends from the area or at the bus stop. I guess they will make friends from school. I think its a great place to raise the kids! Good Luck to you!

But do you like it? The lack of children just means it is not an area where families are starting out. That doesn't concern me. They can make friends at school. I actually like that to some extent.

its a great place for families. Yes, there isn't that kids playing in the streets feel like Queens, but I would def. get involved in some local activities to meet other mom's of little ones in Smithtown. The one thing my mom hated was driving us around Smithtown because when we went it was 1 MS/HS so I had friends all over Smithtown.

what confusion do you have about Smithtown? I can help if you need it.
Now, keep in mind, this is a bad map, but it gives you a general idea as to what are the major sections of Smithtown

Thank you for the map! That helps a lot.

I guess what confuses me is that it is the town of Smithtown, but different towns make up Smithtown.

Yet there is a North Smithtown. So which areas of the township of Smithtown are incorporated? Does all of Smithtown have the same laws?

How is North Smithtown? When looking for houses, would it specify, North Smithtown? Or any section your map cited?

Re: Living in the Town of Smithtown - gimme the scoop!

Ok Here's how it works

Township: Smithtown

Towns in Smithtown
-Smithtown
-Nesconset
-St. James
-Head of the Harbor/Nissaqugue
-Kings Park
-parts of commack
-parts of Hauppauge

Now, north Smithtown is a section (ie it does not have its own zip code) like the others do

Oh I love it. It's so beautiful. I love looking out my window and seeing the beautiful trees and grass. I love having privacy in my own backyard and yet in less than 5 minutes I can be on Main Street/Jericho and do all my shopping. It's great. How do you like it?

We live in north smithtown, although it wont specify that in the town name, alot of time the descriptions on MLS will say north smithtown or morewood or smithtown pines or something under section.

That is what I need to know. So what might I see for North Smithtown, other than Morewood or NS or Smithtown pines? Anything else?
Thanks!

I don't think I have ever heard anyone refer to "North Smithtown" to describe an area.

Thanks for all the responses everyone! This thread is bookmarked. Even though the contracts aren't signed yet (hopefully this week), I'm allowing myself to get a little excited. And you're helping! Chat Icon

If you look at the map for the MLS listing, you can see exactly where the house is. You're not going to get a real feel for anything until you get there and start driving around. When we were going to look at a house, we would arrive half an hour early and drive through the area to get an idea.

There are some areas that have a lot of the same type of houses (1 story ranches, high ranches, etc.), some mixed, etc. I got a lot of information here and there before we started looking but I learned the most by just getting out there.

I really do think it's a 'learn as you go' type of thing. I did searches on this board and then asked a heck of a lot of questions here after each house we saw, since all the situations can be different. And I found a lot of information without even asking, because many people have already asked and I found their old threads. Chat Icon

-is an older town. Def. not a starter town, therefore not too many little kids around

-horrible public library system & public pool

I personally think that while the Town of Smithtown is an older more established town, it is changing. There are many new families coming into the town. Many of those people who have lived her for their whole lives and raised their kids here are moving away. My block is entirely young families and/or couples like us.

Also, I can't speak for the pool but the public library system is changing and expanding. They are building a brand new library in Nesconset where the armory building is. They are also expanding the Smithtown library on Main St. These are going to be incredible facilities when all is said and done.

Aww, Smithtown Newbie. They have been saying they were going to move the Nesconset Library to the armory for over 5 years now, and it hasn't happened.

As for North Smithtown, I went to school all my life there and worked in HS at a real estate office in Smithtown (Coldwell Banker) and people did refer to the area north of Village of the Branch as North Smithtown. It doesn't have it own zip or anything though.

I wasn't saying anything about North Smithtown. Chat Icon I agree with you.

I know the library has been in the planning stages for years but it is definitely a go so it may take some time to complete but I know it will improve over time and hopefully we will be able to use it.

Re: Living in the Town of Smithtown - gimme the scoop!

I hope for you the library is a go, I just know (because I was raised on Mayfair Rd. which backs the armory and is across the street to the Nesconset Library) that its been in the "planning" stages for a while. To give you a little background, the armory sat vacant for over 15 years with loads of "plans" to make it better. So finally, 3 years ago they made it a park, but it is so not taken care of compared with other parks in Smithtown. They wanted to add a fountain, that was 3 years ago, no go. It takes A WHILE for them to pass things, trust me. I remember when there was no Smithaven Mall, that's how long I've been in Smithtown.

do you remember those days? When 347 and Middle Country wasn't happening like it is today. There was construction going on, but no huge stores, not bad traffic. But who am I kidding, I love shopping....

I remember a less congested Middle Country Rd - it is insane now...but pre-Smith Haven mall days pre-dates me (I was born in the early 70s - the mall opened in 1969).

you don't remember when the Smithhaven Mall only had the one area? The change happened I think in like 1980 something, don't know exact years, but it was so much smaller (and I'm not even talking about the new renovations they've done in the last 2 years)....

Re: Living in the Town of Smithtown - gimme the scoop!

I grew up in Nesconset and my parents still live there. I think it was a wonderful place to grow up. So many kids... my block definately had the Open door policy where we would run into each others homes and play in the pools, spend holidays together, etc. I also remember walking to the mall when it was MUCH smaller and walking to Loemanns Plaza and getting frozen yogurt (pre the Wiz and way before DSW) Chat Icon I have to agree with a poster above that there are plenty of young families. Alot of the original residents on my parents block left and it is all young families. Although it is much more congested now, I still think it is a beautiful place to live.

I always remember the mall being there - but the shopping center with circuit city and the other stores around it - I remember when nothing was there. I also remember a bridal store right on the corner of 347 and 25.

Me too...and unless you were born before 1969, it always was LOL

I do remember when the extensions were done...definitely early 80s.
