Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
i had my first apointment tonight and i left there pretty clueless. i told them i was in to confirm pregnancy (this is a new dr i met by the way) she came in and said congrats, did a pap and regular check up and told me to come back in 2 weeks for a sonogram and 4 weeks to meet again with the dr. that was that.
she didnt tell me an EDD (i asked the receptionist at the front for that). she also didnt go over anything of what i can/cant eat what i can/cant do. she gave me some samples of prenatals.
did this happen with anyone else? is it just cuz its very early and until the ultrasound they cant give me more info? i felt like it was a waste of an appointment

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
I'm surprised they didn't do bloodwork or give you a script.
It does seem a bit odd they didn't go over anything or ask if you need prenatals. My OB essentially went over a bunch of stuff the first appt., gave me free samples of pre natals, and we did a sono. (That wasn't something they normally do, I was a special case.) On top of that he sent me for a lot of blood work.
Mind you, I went in and he knows that I'm a type 2 diabetic, so I assume he wanted to cover all bases.
I also did not get an EDD the first appt., but I assume that was mostly because they wanted to do blood work first, and then go by measurements from the sono.
If you do not feel comfortable with how the appt. went, call the doctor's office and explain to them your concerns.

sorry if i was a little unclear, she did ask me about pre-natals...i told her i was taking chewables and she gave me samples of other ones and asked me to bring in the ones i was taking next time. She did mention at the appt in 4 weeks we would do blood.

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
My first doctor with my first pregnancy was like this. we went on our first appointment between 8 and 9 weeks... and they didn't even want me to come until 10 weeks... i faught with them for an appt a week earlier.
no blood test, no information. Just wam bam see ya later. he wasn't very informative, even when i asked questions, he was very vague with answers. to be honest I felt like he had better things to do besides being my doctor. he didn't give me a due date either, I had to ask him.... and even that seemed like it was a pain.
then his office always made comments to insinuate that this pregnancy wouldn't end well (without knowing anything at all). it was rude and out of line... and i was even less thrilled with it when it came true.
i will never visit him or that facility again.

i think i'm only 5.5-6 weeks. im thinking maybe its just really early so hopefully when i go in for my next 2 appts (11/17 and 12/7) that things will be better

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
They can't give you an ETD until they do the sono. They do the first sono and a lot of genetic bloodwork at 9 weeks. I started seeing a new doctor and before I went in, they said to go to my primary care dr to confirm pregnancy and to make an appt with them around 9-12 weeks...which you have to figure out on your own by the last day of your menstrual cycle. My primary dr confirmed my pregnancy and gave me PNV and sent the results to OBYN. I made the appt with the OBYN at around 9 weeks and got my first sono and due date when they were able to measure the fetus....they also went over any concerns. then i went back for the level one (12 week) and got another sono and additonal bloodwork....

That has to be it...its still very early. I'm sure they at least took a urine sample at your appointment? They need to confirm for themselves that you are pregnant. at around 9 weeks you will be able to get your first sono and all your questions answered. be prepared for them to suck a lot of blood from you too!!! Your second appt is probably the level 1

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
THIS is the EXACT reason why I am now going to be meeting with the midwives!!! I had almost the exact experience on my first AND second visit - I'm curious to know if we have the same OB. Even my husband was like "wow... I thought it was going to be alittle more personal than that" Good Luck! If you have any questions, feel free to FM me and if you are looking for a more warm inviting experience, consider the midwives - I only went to the first "seminar" at StonyBrook tonight and I already can tell that they look at me as a woman bringing a life into this world instead of another appointment in need of a bunch of testing.

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
it might have just been because it's so early. I'm not really sure cause I never went in to confirm pregnancy - I just waited until my 8 week appt and that's when we did urine, blood, blood pressure, and first sono. We also talked about what & what not to eat then. It was a good appointment. I'm sure she'll go over all of that later.

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
I was a little further along than you for my first appt - so they did do a sono and gave an edd. However, she did not talk about anything - she even said that she would dicuss it further with me at the next appt. She did go over the prenatals and that was about it. The next appt I had was around 10w and she gave me the script for blood tests and told me some stuff about eating. I found that with her you really need to ask the questions that you want answers to. I hope your next appt goes better - Good Luck

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
My doctor wouldn't even see me until 8 weeks so I think it's too early to go into detail about everything.
At my 8 week appointment they asked me questions and i got to ask them questions. That appointment was very involved.

This is exactly what happened to me at my 1st appointment. And I went to my normal OB/GYN that I've been going to since I'm 16! But I saw his partner. I was 4 weeks and I was going to Vegas in a few weeks... I had all these questions and he really didnt tell me much.. oh except he did tell me not to drink. UMMM REALLY?! Gee thanks A-hole!
I left there really upset. I switched Drs and never went back.

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
Most drs wont even see you before 8 weeks or so. If you are only 4-5 weeks there is nothing much they can do. They may not even be able to see anything clear on a sonogram.

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
Most OBs won't do a sono before 8 weeks.
For my first appt at 6 weeks (it was first time I was using this practice) consisted of BP check, weight check, bloodwork, sono, and a free sample of prenatals.
They didn't see a HB and told me there was a high chance of the pregnancy being non viable!!
I won't go into details. But I almost wish they just waited to do a sono until 8 weeks. By then not only was there 1 healthy HB but 2! We found out I was pregnant with twins!!
Although their "bedside manner" wasn't there for you, it also sounds like you are so early on in your pregnancy there just wasn't much to be done at the appointment.
Sorry she wasn't a little nicer!!

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
My first appt was similar to yours - urine sample, pap smear, etc. I didn't get an EDD until the second or third appointment. Reading all of the pp's it seems like a normal experience!

My doctor did the same thing. You are too early for a sono Just a confirmation you pregnant is all they do. My dr wouldn't even do a sono before 9 weeks, and did blood work then.

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
Hey- I just went to a new doctor for the first time yesterday. She did the math and first thought I was 6 weeks... but at the end she realized that I was less than 5. She did an ultrasound and there wasn't really anything yet- she said she saw a sac starting but I didn't see anything. She only checked my urine... No blood work, no blood pressure, or weight taken. She said that it's still early and to make an appointment for 2 weeks.
I hope this helps you :O)

Re: Little Upset/Confused after 1st Appointment
I just went for my first appointment yesterday. I am going to be 5 weeks on Monday. I met with the NP yesterday. She took a urine sample, did blood work, bp, and took my weight and gave me a flu shot. She asked me a bunch of questions and looked at my history. She told me some information and asked if I was taking prenatal vitamins. She asked about my symptoms and if I had any. She confirmed my pregnancy with the urine test. I had a few questions and she took the time to answer all of them and didn't rush me at all.
My next appointment will be at 8 weeks for the sono and then a few days after that I have an appointment with my OB so I am not meeting with my OB until I am 8 weeks and the NP said that my doctor will go over everything then as well and go over my blood work.
