Confused and Upset,,UPDATE 1/6/09 (PG2)
I called my 12 week results today.
I think Im confusing it here, but, the trisomy (18 or 21) was normal, but, the other theres a 1 in I think he said 80 chance baby may have downs.
I totally broke down after that.
He kept mentioning they recommend an amnio.
I already know deep in my heart, I DON'T want this test. He even mentioned a risk. No way do I want to take that risk.
Please pray that somewhere there was a mistake! I am trying to be positive. The baby did NOT cooperate for the test. I was there for over 90 minutes drinking water and walking halls trying to get the baby to move around.
Finally they said "Ok theres a good shot"..I am soooo hoping there was a mistake and everything is ok.
I have been through sooo much this year. I can't even begin to explain my emotions right now.
Please tell me it's ok I DON'T get the amnio and please send prayers this way.
I greatly appreciate it.

Amnio is a very personal decision and you have every right to decline it. No one should try to pressure you into it. You just do what you feel is best!

Is there a way they can re do this test?
I personally would get the amnio done if the odds were that high just so I could be prepared for what may be to come.
I pray that everything is ok!!!!!!!

It is 100% your choice to have an amnio or not. Do not feel pressured into having it done if you are not comfortable with it. It sounds to me there is a really good chance that your baby is totally fine.

This is a very personal choice that is entirely up to you. I'm pretty sure the 16 week AFP/quad screen test also tests for down syndrome. Maybe you could wait to get those results back to make a decision on the amnio.
The not knowing would eat me alive so I would personally get the amnio.

Right - the SECOND part of this test will give you a better ballpark. I recall my doctor telling me that the second part of the test gives you about an 85% or so accurate answer...
Doing an amnio is a VERY personal decision and one you and DH need to make yourselves. Is there a chance of a problem? Yes, of course there is...but the way the doctors' look at it is: if the chance of the baby having a problem is greater than the chance of an amnio problem - then they do the amnio (that's what the genetic counselor told us)...

I went though this too, and know how upsetting and nerve wracking it can be. Wait for the results of the AFP/Quad Triple Screen. And do try to remember that it's just a screening test.
DH and I were adament about NOT doing an Amnio, but after my AFP/Quad Triple Screen results came back and much crying and going back and forth, we agreed for peace of mind to have the Amnio. I went through ALOT to get pregnant and had previous losses (including the loss of a twin this pregnancy), which is why we did not want an Amnio. However, the risk of having a miscarriage due to an Amnio is much, much lower than most people realize.
We never had any intention of terminating the pregnancy. I think alot of people assume that having an Amnio and having the results come back positive for Downs automatically means the parents will terminate. We wanted to know for peace of mind and to be prepared if the baby did have Downs. Which she does not!

I had 1:63 results for downs and I got the amnio. Turns out everything is fine, but I HAD to know. I have a friend who is not doing ANY of the tests. Its a personal decision. Good luck!

I thank each and every one of you for all your replies.
I do have my 16 week appt. next week and will go in armed with a lot of questions.
Like a lot of you said (and the dr. too) I can wait for the results of the 16 week and then possibly make my decision based on that.
The other option he gave is he said we can "forget about it" and just carry on.
We know we're keeping the baby. There is no question.
I think I got even more emotional, because, I wanted to pick up the phone SO BAD and call my mom...Since I can't do that, I pray HARD to her.
Im hoping because my appt., is "Next Year" Much more BETTER news will come!
I know mom and gram are looking over me and this baby and I pray they are watching and guarding us HARD!

I am sorry-- this is why these tests suck. They are not definitive and can cause a lot of reason to worry, when there may not be.
I would see what the AFP test says at 16 weeks-- and using those results along with the nuchal, it will provide a better picture of the results.
Are you opposed to the amnio because of the invasive nature of it?? What about doing the CVS test?? I know my SIL did this when her 12 week tests came back with not so great results-- FYI, my nephew is totally fine and adorable btw!!

It is completely okay to decline the Amnio and you should do so if that us what you and your DH decide.

For me, and for the reason stated above, I would get the amnio. In all likelihood everything is fine and I would want the amnio to confirm that so that I don't have to stress about it for the next 4 months.

oh Dawn..i hate that you are dealing with this! i hate those tests so much. i didn't do one with Lily and might not this time b/c there is a lot of room for mistakes and it can make you crazy. do not feel bad about the amnio-i wouldn't do it either. not at all. wait for the afp and see what results are yielded there. you have a lot of good angels watching over you and your bean-everything is going to be ok. i truly truly believe that. many and for you.
