Re: LIRR seating etiquette question

I agree that it is strange! if there are empty seats, there is no reason to sit RIGHT next to someone else. I could see if you were in a 3 seater by the window and someone sat in the aisle seat but right next to you? yeah definitely bizarre.

I think that is weird and would not like it.
Just a little advice for future trips, I took LIRR for 8 years and I would always sit by the window in a three seater. I found that the middle seat of the three seater is the last spot that most people take and you have more of a chance of having an empty seat next to you.
Ugh, this doesnt always work for me. If I'm sitting by the window of a 3-seater, it never fails that if someone is going to pick a middle seat, they will pick the one next to me. I'm convinced iits because I'm small...if there was a big guy with a newspaper sitting there, they arent as quick to sit down.
Yes, when i'm desperate enough to take a middle seat, I look for the small person. I'm large and I try to make myself look larger in my seat so no one will sit in the middle seat next to me. Usually doesn't work, though.

You'll find people do the wierdest things on the train. After 10 years I experienced almost everything. Good luck with commuting.

That is so weird. I would NEVER do that...I am hyper-aware of personal space.

Weird! That's like bathroom etiquette to me.....if I'm in there and ALL other stalls are empty...WHY do you choose to go in the one right next to me?? I find that to be annoying as well
OMG! I thought I was the only one!

I guess these people are figuring they would sit with you, who looks clean and professional, then have some weirdo join them in a seat.
Either this or I've noticed that some people have "their seats" it's sooo annoying!!!!!

Re: LIRR seating etiquette question
That is a bit strange. I've always wondered why people do this in near-empty movie theaters, too.

Re: LIRR seating etiquette question
That's just weird that it happened not once but twice to you on the same train.. I enjoy having my own personal space on a train and I don't blame you for moving esp since there were plenty of open spots to sit
