Levittown

I have a friend that's looking for a house and I saw on mlsli that Levittown is so extremely affordable (which sometimes makes me worry). What can you tell me about the area, the schools, the taxes, etc. Any info is appreciated. TIA!

Re: Levittown

Danielle and I live in Levittown and we love it. The neighbors are great, the neighborhood is great too. We bought a cape south of hempstead tpke. The schools are Salk and Macarthur. The taxes are high but Levittown has one of the highest star deductions in Nassau County. We will sav $1400 a year when it kicks in in october.

There are free pools in levittown for all residents. There is shopping close by. I have never lived in a town where the neighbors are so friendly, and they will go out of their way for you.

We love it here.....FM me for more info.

Re: Levittown

We live in Levittown too, been here just about 2 yrs ago. Part of the reason the houses are affordable is they have no basements and were built after WWII for the GIs. When they were originally built, they were all the same, but not today. People have done some amazing things and each one is different. We have a cape south of Hempstead Tpke too.

I really love our home & neighborhood. Everyone is very nice and takes great care of their homes. All of the houses around us have been updated and have nice landscaping and you can tell that people take pride in their homes. It is also convenient to the parkways and not a bad ride to the city (when we bought, we were both working in the city).

Re: Levittown

I also own a home in Levittown and DH grew up here. There have been a ton of posts about Levittown's affordability because this question comes up all the time. Try searching the Home posts. It's a great place to live. I live in the Island Trees School District and DH graduated from there. The schools are very good and smaller than Levittown schools. Plus our taxes are lower.

Re: Levittown

I don't live in Levittown but that's where my husband grew up (and all of his family still lives)

I can say this - they are a really extremely tight community. My BIL and SIL are soooo close with all of their neighbors and the parents from school. DH and I went to see our nephew go trick or treating one year and there were literally 50 kids and parents going to every house together.

I grew up in Levittown, but live in Putnam county now. I had a great childhood- I took dance, played softball, was a scout, took swimming lessons. It was a great place to grow up. There's a small chance that DH and I will end up back there to be closer to family, but I would be happy there. It's really a nice community.

Re: Levittown

My Aunt lives there all by herself...she's 90 years old and like everyone says...she has the NICEST neighbors ever! They check in on her daily...bring over food, invite her to BBQs. They're truly wonderful!
I also love the free pools to all Levittown residents.

We are in contract on a house right now in Levittown (Island Trees SD). DH graduated from the HS as well. We'll be located on the north side of Hempstead Tpk, off Jerusalem Ave. Taxes are a bit lower. good luck!! Chat Icon

I teach in Levittown (Island Trees) and have found that it is a great community. Neighbors genuinely care about each other and most of the area are really well-kept.

Re: Levittown

I live in Levittown after growing up in Suffolk and living out there my whole live. I've been here for 2 years, and while I am a renter, I still feel as if I love this community.

All of the houses are very different -- people are constantly remodeling and working towards improvement.

One thing my DH and I were discussing is how in a lot of other areas you see people who don't mow thier lawns, etc and everyone pretty much keeps up here --- for the most part. I think people take pride in thier property out here...

Also there is great shopping, proximity to many malls (Broadway in Hicksville, Roosevelt Field, The Source, Massapequa), major roadways (LIE, Northern, Southern, etc), and also close to the water if you just head a little south to Wantagh, or to Jones Beach and that area.

Aside from the many public pools there are also little parks EVERYWHERE. If you leave your house and just drive a little bit you'll almost always pass a field or a park where kids can play....and they'll always leave that space I think .... I don't think they'll ever build over it just to make more homes. It's part of the community.

I personally love living here and hope that when we buy a house it will be in Levittown. I think it's a good area to raise our family.

Re: Levittown

I grew up in Wantagh and DH in Westbury. We would never buy in Levittown for our own personal reasons.

Wantagh is the town right next door to levittown so as I knew how the neighborhood- levittown was growing up, I dont know of it much anymore but driving threw it to get to my gym and get to wantagh to visit my friends and family.

It seems to be changing from the posts on here but as an above poster said and I wont repeat it Im shocked her realtor called it that- Levittown is known for PWT but I cant believe a realtor would say that.

Good luck to your friend. Some good people on here live there.

and I hope not to offend anyone, its an open question.

"Some good people live there"

I do take offense to this.

Many many LIF members live in Levittown. My DH grew up here, we own a home here. Every town has people who aren't the best neighbors. The majority of those living on my block are either young couples or older couples who have been here for years. I do take offense to your characterization of the town. It's impossible to be POOR and own a home on Long Island, so that's just wrong. If you didn't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't have said anything at all. Especially since this post is days old, and you dug it up! Chat Icon

You know what - everyone always has something bad to say about Levittown, and you know what - That makes me feel good - because I know the people that have bad comments about Levittown wont be looking for a house here.

Levittown is made up of families, young couples, older couples that have been here for 30 plus years, and people who are just starting out. There is something in this area that I have never seen in any other town before.

Neighbors say hello to each other, come over to talk, give gifts on the holidays, bring in your newspaper or garbage cans when they see you arent home to do it yourself, snowblow your house in the winter, wash your car just because they want to.

This town is soo different and so special. If there are people out there that have so many negative comments about the town, then that is great for us - because we dont need them here

I keep reading her post and honestly...she didn't say anything bad about Levittown currently..it was back when she knew it growing up...but she specifically said it sounds like it's changed a lot from the posts, etc.

Like Scott said...it's a great neighborhood. My Aunt lived there for years and still does. Just talking with her last night she was telling me what a God sent some of her neighbors are for checking in on her...heck her own Daughter in Hicksville won't even come over to visit.Chat Icon

Not to mention the fact it IS an up and coming town that is filled with young families just starting out. I think that's fantastic for the community.Chat Icon

Wow!! I really didn't intend to start ANY drama when I originally posted my question about Levittown. I just wanted to hear from the Levittown community and get their feedback on a neighborhood neither my friend nor I had ANY clue about. Thank you to those of you that gave your feedback and valuable information. My friend and I truly appreciate it. Chat Icon

You know whats really funny. When I was in school.... The kids who went to Mac Garthar were the rich kids who drove nice cars and Blew things up their nose... BECAUSE MOST OF THOSE KIDS WERE FROM WANTAGH AND HAD THE MONEY TO DO IT! Chat Icon I also remember hearing some no nice things about Wantagh H.S. Thats change now though (wantagh h.s)

I love L-Town. Im not sure what she ment by "good people" though Oh Well
