Level 2--horrible Experience.

Ok I just got back from the most awful sonogram of life. First of all, the sono tech was not nice at all and ruined the entire experience for us. She basically made me cry in the room because she couldn't see what she needed to see. She lost her patience , told me to empty my bladder and then was able to do what she needed. Throughout the sono she made us think the baby was measuring small. Kept asking how they figured out my due date, how big of a baby I was etc. When I asked if the size was ok, she said "Everyone comes in different shapes and sizes." WTF does that mean?! At the end of it she was very cryptic about everything being ok so I knew something was up. I spoke to the office manager on the way out who felt terrble and got the doctor right away and he sat with us.

The doctor was AWESOME. It was Dr. Goldstein at Madonna Perinatal in Bay shore. Anyway, he told us the baby looks perfect, is measuring five days ahead. He also told us that it has choroid plexus cysts which is a soft marker for Edwards syndrome. He said the baby had no other soft markers and there is no reason to believe the baby has this syndrome. He said these cysts always go away and that there is nothing to worry about. I can't help but panic. He said it would be like looking at a short male from far away and guessng he has down's syndrome just because he is short. He said this is very common, that he had seen 5 babies today with them and that there is "no way your baby has this or down's for that matter." I'm still a nervous wreck.

Have any of you had any experiences like this? I called my sister who is an OBGYN and used to work closely with Dr. Goldstein. She called him and he said everything is fine, looks great and not to worry and that the next time I go I need to see HIM not the other sono tech. Chat Icon

In other news the baby apparently loves mexican food as it was moving all over (whcih annoyed the technician even more) and very long legs. Chat Icon

I've had a few rude sono techs-go by what the doctor says, they are the ones analyzing the photos. I'm glad he make you feel a little bit better.

The doctor would let you know if something was wrong and had to look into it further, that is what the sonos are for.

As for the sono tech, wish diarrhea upon her.Chat Icon

Thats awful... im sorry she upset you... they dont realize sometimes the most innocent comments are not really easy to hear... I have no experience with the Edwards... but my cousins son had cyst on his brain it developed later in the pregnancy and he needed surgery after he was born... but most that develop early are gone by the time the baby is born!

Glad you saw Dr Goldstein. He was my high risk dr. He is great and is very honest and to the point so if he said not to worry I would totally trust him.

Sorry you had a bad experience there. I have to say that is not the norm for them. I saw just about everyone there during my time and everyone was great.

I was shocked! Myf irst sono was AMAZING there and I made sure they knew that! This woman was clearly having a bad day and taking it out on us. It's ok! I;m just super afraid now of the cysts Chat Icon

I'm sorry that she upset you so much. My daughter also had the chorid plexus cysts and I completely freaked out-my dr's(sampino and vullo) made me feel so much better about it. They basically said that it is the single most common "finding" and that it has no influence on the baby's function whatsoever. Just so you know it may not go away prior to birth, but rest assured that there is nothing that needs to be done and that there are plenty of people that are walking around with them now without ever knowing!

In our case, they dissolved by the 28th week or so and I just gave birth to a perfectly healthy little lady two weeks ago. I know it's easier said than done, but try to relax and dont google it too much! And most importantly, congrats!!!

Thank you!! Dr. Vullo and Sampino are my docs too! I can't wait to see them on the 14th..I know I will feel better. I might even try to make an earlier appointment to be honest! Congratulations on your little lady! You made me feel a lot better!

My 1st DD had those cysts as well - they went away on their own and she is a perfectly happy & healthy almost 3 year old. I was scared as well - and Dr. Goldstein was the one who reassured me back then. He's great!

Re: Level 2--horrible Experience.

VERY different situation here, but with my first pregnancy we had the sono tech tell us everything was great. We found out he was a boy and while we waited for the dr to come in (standard protocol) I texted half the people in my phone to reveal the gender. Within minutes after the doctor came in, we got the worst news I ever heard in my life. This isn't to scare anyone here, just that I had the complete opposite experience with a sono tech so long story short.. they are not doctors and shouldn't try to be. I'm not knocking sono techs. I'm sure some are awesome and my former surrogate was one too! I'm just saying you shouldn't rely on them for diagnostic purposes, both good and bad.

I'm glad the doctor is so confident this will all be FINE!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon

That's awesome! One of them will probably call you this week anyway to discuss what was on the sonogram before then :) the second I spoke to them, I was immediately relieved. If by any chance, you speak the np-- make sure to also speak to dr vullo, he's much better at explaining what's going on and being very reassuring.

Yeah I had my first appointment with the NP and was less than thrilled. I will definitely make sure to speak to the Drs. I just want a Dr. Vullo hug! lol

Re: Level 2--horrible Experience.

I had a sono when they found I had a polyp, and the sono tech was like 'Look! It has its own blood flow. I know you won't think so, but I think its really cool!" I was like "Um, no...I don't think its "cool"...I think its horrifying." I am glad that she has some detached interest in medical oddities, but I wasn't thinking about how "cool" it was at the time. Its not "cool" when its something wrong with your body.
