Let's talk about windows...

I have the slightest clue about windows...but all I keep hearing is "Andersen" and "Pella". I heard that Andersens are hard to install, but that is about it. Has anyone installed windows recently and can you recommend one? I am completely clueless on what to get and even where to go so any help would be appreciated!

In my old house I had Pella and Unified windows. In this house I had window world put in windows. They all are vinyl replacement. I did not notice a difference between Pella and the other ones. If you can afford Pella or Anderson than use them. We had 19 windows put in so we needed a more affordable window.

We are in the same boat. So far we have looked into Anderson, Pella, and Restoration. It is so hard to compare them as they are all a little different. If anyone knows more about windows, let me know as well.

Re: Let's talk about windows...

We have all brand-new Andersen windows, but my contractor put them in, so I don't know how easy/hard that part is.

I would definitely recommend getting the low-E coating and the argon-filled windows. The coating keeps a lot of the UV rays out of the house, which keeps stuff from fading. The argon insulates much better than air in the double-pane windows.
We have the double-hung that you can open inward to clean, which makes it much easier than trying to clean 2nd story windows from outside....

We have Pella Downstairs and Simonton upstairs. They are both Energy Efficient windows.

We just put a Pella window and french door in our kitchen. I can tell you that they are made beautifully. The rest of the house has Anderson and are nice as well.

This is more or less required for you to get the tax credit.

Re: Let's talk about windows...

we put in andersen 400 series (the E rating that was mentioned above) and they are great. They are wood replacement, not vinyl. I know people who put in vinyl replacement and they had issues with them after a few years. we paid for someone to install, and they were expensive, but its a long term investment imo.
