Lego question
Looking at a few sets for a gift. Is there a big difference in something labeled starting at age 5 versus starting at age 6? Would a 6+ set be okay for a typical 5 year old? We don't have any regular Legos yet and dd is behind with fine motor so I don't have the best insight here (it's not for her).

Lego question
I have never looked at the age on my DS legos. He's five and we still work with him on putting sets together.
I just buy what he likes and then adjust our level of involvement

Lego question
A 6+ set should be good for a 5 year old.
I'm not sure what sets you are looking at but, I found the Lego City sets easiest for my kids to assemble at 5. The character sets were a bit more difficult.

Re: Lego question
I think if the kid who your buying for plays a lot with them, then that's fine. My DD has trouble with sets that are above her age range, but my DS is 8, and does the 12+ no problem.

Lego question
There's not much of a difference between those that are for 5+ or 6+ - maybe just more pieces. I would say it's more important to get a set that's in a theme that they would like. Ex: DS is 7 and has been doing large sets since 4, so he obviously loves them. He loves the Lego City, Ninjago, and Star Wars sets. But if you get him anything in the Superhero line, he doesn't play with it again.

Re: Lego question
I think it depends upon the kid. My kids like Lego city, Lego friends, mine craft, Star Wars, and Lego ideas. They don't like the superman or ninja turtle sets. They also like the generic Legos that let them just play.

Re: Lego question
I'd stick to the appropriate age on those Lego boxes. I find them pretty accurate in terms of skill... I have a boy and a girl.
Big difference between 5 & 6 and it could be frustrating for someone who, at 5, probably doesn't have a ton of Lego exposure.
