Leaving out candy for Halloween

Do you leave candy outside for kids to take if you aren't home? I saw a lot of this on my block last year so was curious.

Re: Giving out candy for Halloween

I did it one year and I feel like one kid took it all.
Never again.
I now work from home that day so I can give out candy.

Yea, which is why I am not sure if I want to leave it out but in my block there are a lot of houses that leave candy in bowls.

We're not going to be home, and I'm having the same dilemma. Honestly, I'm probably not going to leave anything.

Giving out candy for Halloween

We leave it out but with something unexciting like pretzels or Halloween pencils. Nobody wants 10 of those.

I've always come home to a few items in the bowl.

This is Genius! Maybe I'll leave the Halloween pretzels! Great idea!

I leave a little of the stash out. I figure maybe some honest people will get one before a greedy one comes along. I wouldn't put the whole stash out unless you want it gone and don't care who gets it.

Re: Leaving out candy for Halloween

We do only because no one trick or treats on our street. It isn't well lit and a lot of the homes are vacation homes, so we trick or treat on other streets and leave out candy in case anyone does show up.

My sister did this once and some kids took everything-including the bowl! She was so mad bc it was a good stainless steel bowl. We don't leave anything but we don't go out for long. My son would rather hand out the candy than trick or treat himself so we go to a few houses and then stay home to hand out the treats.

Re: Leaving out candy for Halloween

We have when we take DS out. But, he's only 4 now so previous years it's been for maybe 20-30 mins.

On Halloween, DH sets up a scary guy on a chair on the porch (stuffed with paper and a balloon with a mask over it.). Lots of kids think its real so I think it deters them a little. They are afraid it's like Americas funniest home videos and someone Is going to jump out.

One year all we put out was gone but some kids replaced it with crappy expired candy....weird.

Nope. If we are not there, they get nothing or can come back later if they are passing back that way.

Re: Leaving out candy for Halloween

We left candy bags last year with a sign. Only half was gone when we came back.

When the kids went to bed, I put out another sign saying kids are sleeping. I put out treat bags and then replenished with just candy when DH and I went to bed. When we woke up in the morning, there were still a few pieces of candy left in the bowl.

We leave out candy and make a sign to take one. We came home and it looked like all the kids were honest because we had a lot left over. I guess it takes one greedy kid to spoil the whole thing.

Re: Leaving out candy for Halloween

We did one year when both my parents were sick and I was going out. We have cameras so we saw some kids get candy and then two teenagers dumped all of into their bags and left. Chat Icon

Leaving out candy for Halloween

My mom's been doing this for years and I will be too because I have appointments that day with the OB and at the hospital. I feel most kids are honest but if not, oh well.

Re: Leaving out candy for Halloween

I do it and 1st year the bowl was empty. Last few years, a couple pieces were taken. I will be out trick or treating with my own kids anyway so I don't mind. I also don't "fill" the bowl.

Leaving out candy for Halloween

I did it once and I came home to not only no candy left but no bowl! Who does that?

Since I will be taking DD out, I am not going to leave anything. I'll have on hand for when we come back and if kids ring the bell.

Re: Leaving out candy for Halloween

I leave out candy every year. I am rarely home.. We our out trick or treating with our 4 and 3 year old!

I realize the kids are going to take more then they should. I buy the big bag from Bjs with like 300 pieces in it.

When it it is gone, (this never happened) i will put a sign on the door, thank your friends, all the candy is gone! have a good night!

but so far, and this is my 7th year in this house, and we have a ton of kids, they have been pretty good and i have yet to run out!

We bought a few big bags of candy a week or 2 ago on sale.

Won't kill me if kids take it: we still have candy from last year left over!

Will be trick or treating ourselves...

Good advice to put out a cheap bowl!

Nope. Because when I was a teen, I was the jacka$$ that took everything in the bowl.
