Re: leaving LI
I left staten island for charlotte. Main reason, I wanted a chance to be a SAHM. DH is an outdoorsman. 2 hours from mountains, 3 from beaches.

Re: leaving LI
I would move down South.
Actually, my DH said he would never move from LI, but the other night while we were hanging out he said he was tired of LI and the daily grind.
He said maybe in a couple of years, 4 - 5 years we would go down South.
I am ready now.

Beth, we won't be leaving for a couple years. But honestly I am ready, I am not sure what is going on with me.
I love my position, but things are really bothering me at work and I am having a really hard time sucking it up and concentrating on what I really love!
I also notice I am a much happier when it is warmer outside. I love the warm weather!

In that case, buy a big house so we can come visit!

Re: leaving LI
I have to agree the taxes, gas, etc is to high here on LI and if dh and I decided to move I think it might be either georgia or Florida, also maybe near Las vegas. I would leave myself tomorrow out of here but we just bought a house and who know's maybe in 4 years we will leave.

Re: leaving LI
DEFINITELY!!!! You and Gregg are always welcome!!!
Since I will be doing compressed work week this summer, I am thinking of visiting Tiff or Jean for a long weekend.
It's weird, I really need to spend time with one of them. They were my rock solid friends in college and I really need them now. I can't really explain it, but they were always the ones I went too when I was feeling like this.

We are leaving on the 26th to go down and look at NC. My whole family is moving to the Willow Spring area in Johnston/Wake county. Houses are real cheap and you great large property and nice size house for less money.... When I get back I will upload pictures for you girls and let you know what I think ....

Re: leaving LI
we've tossed around the idea of moving out of state only because we've been looking online and comparing prices/taxes to NY and cant believe what we see. we would move to GA more than likely primarily because my license would carry over and i wouldnt have to get licensed again. but if not GA then NC.

Re: leaving LI
If work didn't matter, and for places in this area, I would move to NJ, possibly around the Cape May area. If you want a decent commute to the city, still consider NJ (Central or Northeastern NJ near the city).
As for the whole country, I love Seattle and San Francisco, but prices aren't any better there. Washington DC also, but the same there. I don't care for the southeast at all, but that's me.

Re: leaving LI
On a totally unrealistic front, I relocated to Manchester England about 7 years ago and our standard of life is much much higher than we could have ever had on Long Island...even with the high cost of living in the UK we have a really good standard of living! (our property tax for the year is $2400!!!)

Re: leaving LI
I'm in Fairfax, VA. Taxes are cheaper, but housing prices/traffic are pretty much just as high. If you get about an hour of of DC, though, it's significantly cheaper. There's also the Richmond area and the Tidewater (VA Beach) area.
We've gone back and forth about moving to either the Carolina's or Arizona though.

Re: leaving LI
We can't move anytime soon because of DH's job, but if we could we wuld either go to New Hampshire, Maine, or Virginia. I lived in NC for a year and I liked it, but don't think I would like to live there.

I know this may sound strange - but NJ - like around Cherry Hill - there are a lot of cool places there, and its very homey and nice...
!
i grew up near cherry hill!!!! i LOVED it! i grew up in burlington county, NJ... the mount holly area. its a really great area- lots of great towns with good schools, and lots of nice shopping areas, too- and close to philly, which is a great city.
ETA: i now live in morris county NJ ( about 40 minutes from the city) and love it here, too.. its close to the city, but theres a lot of nice mountains and parks and great little downtown areas ( denville, morristown, chester) that you can walk around and shop, hang out, etc...

Re: leaving LI
We have talking about moving lately. LI is just too expensive for us and I worry about the kind of future my DS will have if prices, taxes and congestion continue on LI.
Were have been thinking about Virginia and the Carolinas.

Re: leaving LI
Keep in mind that the boom of real estate down south will make the cost of living increase over the next few years (taxes will go up, etc). Our financial planner advised to look at states other than the "now" popular relocation states.W ithin the next 10 years there will be a boom in movement to other states (other than the Carolinas and Georgia) because those states will be difficult to survive in, he said Virginia, Texas, Tennesse are states that will not see the huge relocation and will stay relatively stable in regarr to cost of living for a longer time span.
