Gas or electric??
We are planning to get a gas one but my mom said electric is better. She's usually wrong about things but I want to ask everyone else
Good amount of grass if it matters. Not large enough for a ride on mower

Re: Lawn mower
I swear by the EGO Power tools. I currently have their lawnmower, backpack leafblower, chainsaw, weed wacker, and hedge trimmer.
I have gas and battery powered versions of everything, and the battery ones easily go toe-to-toe with the gas ones. Plus, I don't have to deal with the gas, oil, storage, maintenance, noise, smell, etc.
You can get the products from Home Depot, or on-line. HD only sells the items with a battery, so if buy a few of their tools, it's better to get some of them on-line, since you don't need a dozen batteries...
I also have a corded lawn mower. I liked the benefit of the noise, smell and not dealing with gas and oil, but the cord was a PITA.
The batteries last a long time, and they charge in 20 minutes, so with two batteries, you can pretty much work non-stop all day...
They even have self-propelled mowers. I don't have one of those, since we don't have a huge amount of grass, but it is an option.

Battery! ITA that the cord is a PITA, but gas is almost as bad!
Self-propelled mower $599
Non-self propelled mower $449
They're expensive, but no more buying gas or oil...
A good gas mower is $200-$300, and a good self-propelled gas mower is $300-$500 (and up! ), so the battery ones aren't ridiculously more expensive.

We just got an electric (with a chargeable battery, not with a cord) after our gas mower that we had for 10 years died. Only used it once so far, but we both like it. Its much quieter than a gas mower, super easy to start up (just press a button, no cord to repeatedly yank really hard), and the battery on the model we got lasts about an hour.

Re: Lawn mower
The city has guys mowing all the public lawns twice a week. I should just run out and pay them $20. They would be done in under 3 minutes. They're ridiculously fast.
I'm Afraid to see how much a landscaper would be. Every single estimate we have recieved for the house has made me cry.

No. I like the idea, but I haven't tried any. DS is 14, so I plan on using him as my robot mower now...

get landscaping quotes. When we first moved into our house DH was all gung ho on doing it himself. Until he spent every sat doing the lawn instead of being at the beach or on the boat. Not worth the time spent. Lawn service is relatively cheap.

Re: Lawn mower
I agree with getting quotes for a lawn service. I have a pretty large yard (a bit over 1/3 of an acre) and it only costs me $50 a week. So $200 a month to not waste almost a whole day every week doing yard work is so worth it for me. Not to mention that they mow, edge, weed wack and blow everything down afterwards. The lawn looks so much better now than when DH would just mow it lol.

Get a landscaper or at least be open to getting quotes from them -- that and the cleaning lady are the best spent money EVER. Both free up so much time for our family to spend time together. When DH was doing it himself (cutting front yard, back yard, edging, trimming hedges/bushes, bagging everything up, sweeping sidewalk. etc.) he was outside for 3ish hours on either Saturday or Sunday morning. It was cutting into our ability to do fun activities. Rather than cold call companies, I would stop and take a pic of landscaping trucks I saw in my area that neighbors were using (assuming I liked the way their property looked!)

In that case, I would go for one of the electric ones that Goldenrod suggested. Gas stinks and is so inconvenient. The electric ones used to suck but they make much better ones nowadays.

so do the hedges yourself since you don't need it done weekly. But I will bet that after a summer of mowing you and your DH will hire someone.

Our Toro gas mower just died. My husband uses mainly Ryobi tools so we bought an electric mower by Ryobi. It is great!!! No cord, just a battery that lasts a long time.

My husband swears by the Ryobi electric tools too. He recently got the 18v lithium hybrid mower and it works great for us (but we don't have that large of a property). The best t is that the batteries for all of his tools are interchangeable so he always has extra charged batteries on the side.
Our last electric mower lasted over 10 years but the battery just started to not hold its charge. We opted for a new mower rather than just buy a replacement battery

This is what we have too. You can have them mow every other week & ask them to trim hedges 2x a year to maybe save some money. See how the property looks to you & if you think it's messy, you can increase the frequency.
