Laparoscopy?
Has anyone had a laparoscopy?
I have unexplained infertility and just finished my last unsuccessful Clomid cycle. My RE recommended doing this before moving on to something more aggressive. She wants to rule out endometriosis since I have some symptoms.
It's my call if I want to do it or just move straight to injectables or IVF and I'm not sure. I'm a little nervous about having surgery, but if she finds something wrong we can fix it before wasting time and $$ on treatments that wouldn't work anyway.
If you've had this surgery, can you share your experience with me?
TIA

Re: Laparoscopy?
My RE does not recommend laproscopy unless a patient objects to the more aggressive treatments like IVF.

How come? I only ask b/c my RE recommends that this be our next step. I've decided not to go this route just yet but I'm curious why your RE doesn't recommend it.
ETA: Sorry to hijack with a question, Lola, esp when I have no input to your original question.

No problem, I was just about to ask the same thing.

I believe his thinking is that IVF is the way to go. If you are going to subject your body to surgery, why not put a fertilized egg in there in the process.

Those were my basic thoughts.
I had a laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, D and C and tubal lavage all at the same time and IVF was never considered in my treatment at the time I had those procedures. I am/was an IUI patient.
I had been diagnosed with cervical stenosis after a laser procedure/cone biopsy left scar tisse on my cervix. That procedure was to remove cervical dysplasia caused by HPV. Upon discussion with my RE, knowing full well that I was going to be under a general anesthetic, we decided that these procedures would be necessary for exploratory as well as possibly diagnostic reasons.
The D and C was going to HAVE to be done to open me up enough to receive an IUI catheter. As long as I was going to be knocked out, my RE wanted to be able to rule out anything else that could have been an issue (if found). I had no objection to this at all.
No doctor wants to put a patient under a general anesthetic more times than they have to. There are risks for the patient and liabilities for the doctors. I also look at it this way, if he did only a D and C and I went through multiple cycles of IUIs only to learn months later that there were other issues keeping me from getting PG, that would have been time wasted. I did not have that time to lose. I was fortunate in that nothing presented as an issue through the laparoscopy or hysteroscopy and all pathology came back normal. They learned I had a fibroid the size of a dime that was not worth the risk of removal.

Re: Laparoscopy?
I had laparoscopy and hysterscopy at the same time last June. The HSG report said I had a blocked right tube (which we found later was not the case) and my uterus looked like it had scar tissue in it. It was not a big deal. You are in and out same day. Took about 4 days to fully recover but took it easy for about 1 week and no heavy lifting for about 2wks. In the end, they did nothing. My uterus did not have scar tissue, I have a T-shaped uterus. Maybe caused by something a dr gave my mom years ago when she was pg with me to avoid m/c. Though my doctor thinks its not related to that. We'll never know Mom's dr is dead as well as all his records. Anyway, I look at it as a waste of my time. BUt, if they found something it would have been worth it. At least I know I don't have any other problems (beside thyroid and poor egg quality). Isn't this roller coaster fun. Good luck with your decision. I don't really think I was much help here.

Re: Laparoscopy?
I just had mine done yesterday. My RE said it was the next step because he couldn't find anything else wrong. I have been ttc for a year now. Started out witb blood work, sono (showing nothing wrong), did hsg (no blockage) so this was the next step. I was very nervous about doing it because I have no symptoms of endometriosis but thats what he found. Said it was moderate and was behind my uterus thats why it wasnt showing up on sono. He says since we caught it pretty early he thinks we should be able to get pregnant on our own in a couple of months. The procedure took about an hour. I was in alittle pain yesterday but Im fine today. Just allittle sore. I am so glad I did it and did not wait any longer. Hopefully he got it all and we will see what happens. Good luck to you!

Re: Laparoscopy?
I just had it done a month ago. Before going to my RE, my ob/gyn had me go for u/s due to my history of cysts. I had 4 u/s done last year and all the reports suggested endometriosis and that I had an endometrioma on my left ovary. I also had an HSG done the month before going to my RE. When my ob/gyn sent me to the RE, he saw the report and did his own sonogram. He didn't see the endometrioma and he did another one when AF came. Again he didn't see it. I did 2 rounds of clomid w/IUI which none were successful. After complaining of extreme pain on my left ovary, he suggested doing a lapo. When he finally got in there, my endometriosis was contained to the pelvic area and he also saw it on my bowels, so all that was cleaned up. He did see the endometrioma and it was actually larger than he expected. He removed the endometrioma, but unfortunately, that leaked at one time and it caused scar tissue on my left fallopian tube. He flushed it 3 times but it didn't work. So now I only have 1 tube. He regrets not going in sooner because maybe that left tube could've been saved. I don't regret not having the surgery sooner because we were both under the impression that the left tube was clear and I wanted to at least try Clomid. He also said that for me, there is a 40-60% chance that the endometriosis will come back. I have an appointment on Monday and I will be starting the injections.

Re: Laparoscopy?
I had a diagnostic laparascopy d&C and tubal lavage for suspected endometriosis. My Re found mild disease. We then tried on our own for 6 month and we will soon be going on to our 2nd iui. Biggest thougth was that I don't want to regret not doing it one year from now. Just trying not to have any regrets. hope that helps
