Kitchen cabinets - WWYD?
In the next 2 years or so we will be redoing our kitchen.
We went to IKEA and saw the "popular" one that a lot of people have. DH and I have been eyeing it for a while (OK years!) and it's in the back of our mind.
It would about $2K in cabinets.
I just feel that everyone has those cabinets now. That he might look "too" modern.
We went to HD and I love those Kraftmaid cabinets. It's not their cheapest cabinet construction but not the most expensive. They have 2 in between the cheapest and the most expensive. Essentially if would be about $8K-$10K for maple cabinets. But with a glaze, etc..
So we are talking at $6K to $8K difference between IKEA and Kraftsmaid.
I do like the Ikea cabinets. I am not IN LOVE with them.
But I am worried that the Kraftmaid cabinets might not be worth all the money anyway. Because the $8K was essential plywood cabinets with a veneer and just solid maple doors. The $10K was solid maple sides.
I don't know if it's worth it to pay that much for Maple.
I don't think I want to spend that much
The price difference would mean being able to redo (gut job) the 2 bedrooms upstairs that need to be remodeled.
But I don't want something that will look crappy in 2 years either.
WWYD???
More expensive cabinets (those are Thomasville but very similar to Kraftmaid look I like)
The other one is the IKEA medium brown that is very popular. Someone posted pics of it recently.

I think I might keep looking, especially if you think you will stay in that house a while.
I would only go with Ikea if you need a fast & cheap fix, or you really love them.
I don't know if $10K is too much for maple, but I'd compare to some other brands at places besides HD.

if it were me, i would get the ikea cabinets - i couldn't stomach spending more than i was comfortable with on the other cabinets plus i rather have money left over to finish more rooms in the house. of course you have to live with the ikea cabinets, so only you know if you would be happy with them.
i am working on a budget in our house and when it comes to things in my house even if it's not what i would have absolutely loved (which everything i love we can't really afford  ) the projects we do still end up looking better than what was there before and that makes me happy...i can give a million examples of where i didn't spend on what i really wanted due to money but did something else that i ended up really liking - i learned how to be realistic with our money and like i said, i rather spread it out around the house than have one room done.
other people want what they want and will do one room at a time even if it takes them years to finish the house - i can't do that, i have no patience

I would go with the upgraded cabinets...i cannot imagine spending money on a remodel and kicking myself in the end for purchasing something that I did not love....
especially if you live in your kitchen like we do!! Heck, i love spending money...so you might not want to go by me!!!!
And would it cost you extra to have the cabinets assembled, not installed? figure that into your costs....

My personal experience is that any time I've gone with a cheaper option for the sake of saving money, I've regretted it.
We just finished our kitchen and spent a lot on our cabinets and I don't regret it for a second. I know we could have spent half the money we did and still had a "nice" kitchen, but it would have been settling. And every time I walk in my kitchen, I'm giddy.
I don't know what the future holds or how long we'll stay in this house, but having the kitchen we have makes me want to stay forever. And if/when we do sell, I know potential buyers are going to fall in love with our house because of our kitchen!
So my advice is, spend more and get what you really want (even if it means putting the bedroom renovations off a little longer).

I would assemble myself. It's $100 per cabinet otherwise. No way! But it's not many cabinets. I can only do the standard 10x10 L shape kitchen.

I would go for the Ikea cabinets and then remodel the two room upstairs. That is a huge price difference!
I had Ikea cabinets in my co-op and they are not "cheap" by any means, they looked great and their quality held up.
These are them except mine were a maple.

The 2 styles are so different. If you don't really love the Ikea ones, I think you may tire of it. It's a much more contemporary look.

I wouldnt get Ikea cabinets. Not sure if they are made well. I have Kraftmaid from Consumers and they look great. They are cherry wood and have all of the cool features (pull outs, garbage can drawer, sponge drawer, lazy susan, etc.). I get a lot of compliments on them. I can FM you a pic if you want! They cost 14,000 but that is b/c I bought the most expensive door style that had a full overlay which looks better that cabinets with 1/2 inch overlay, IMO. Thomasville are the same quality as Kraftmaid.

Go Look at Family Kitchens in Bethpage and ask for Mike. We went there and he was really helpful. Just stay away from Below Wholesale Cabinets

I would not do the Ikea cabinets. It's worth the extra money for better quality(and better looking) cabinets IMO I just spent a good amount on custom cabinets and don't regret it one bit. They were actually cheaper to do than Thomasville cabinets from HD!! I looks like my kitchen is upgraded and when I sell the price will reflect that as well. I also purchased my home in 2002 so it's a bit different. We already technically made our money back...

I would not spend money just on cabinets that could be used toward other improvements that would make your family happier in the house.
As for the resale theory, depending on when you purchased your home & when you may be looking to sell you may not get any return on the kitchen regardless of what you spend.
There are tons of homes for sale on LI in good neighborhoods that were purchased 2004-2008 and have new high end kitchens and baths but now they are listed so high because the sellers are looking to get back what they paid plus the cost of improvements. Its just not happening. The homes are not appraising high enough even if they have top of the line kitchens.
So in my opinion a lot of the old standard beliefs in resale value is out the window right now. Not to mention that after 5-7 years buyers don't consider a kitchen "new" anymore & industry standards say styles change every 10 years.
My DH is in the construction business and we bought low end stock cabinets 6 years ago for our own home. We needed to do a lot of other work and I could not jusify spending that much money on one room. My kitchen functions extremely well, I host holidays for 25 people or more & my low end cabinets have no effect on the quality of the event. Not to mention its been six years of hard use & they are in perfect condition.
My neighbors are about to spend 25,000 on cabinets alone and a member of their family that is a real estate agent told them to forget getting all of that money back when they sell.

We used Ikea cabinets in our first home, purchased it in early 2004 and sold it summer of 2006. There is no way I would have gotten back a $20-$30K kitchen.
The kitchen didn't look cheap at all. We had stainless steal appliances, granite counters, glass back splash and beautiful tile floors.
They were very easy to put together and it isn't made like their furniture. It held up to my DS when he was a baby, both my SIL's have it in there kitchens and both of them have kids.
I also think you need to figure out an overall budget. Custom cabinets and get pricey fast once you add glazes and more detailed doors. If you go custom will you also be able to put the floors, counters and backsplash you want?

My experience is that HD is not the best priced cabinet place.
i'd shop around too.
i loved the ikea cabinets but they were too modern for my husband.
i don't think going with ikea really means a lesser quality either. people on this board absolutely love them. they say that they have made great strides in quality... someone on here has had them for years.

I did my entire kitchen with Kraftmaid cabinets and granite and all new appliances for 10K. We did all the labor ourselves except for the granite and for that price Ikea cabinets wouldn't have saved enough to make it worth it.
If the OP is doing work themselves I say go with highend cabinets cause you won't save that much with a cheaper cabinet......half the money is in installation so if you do it yourself a kitchen can be inexpensive.

We have IKEA cabinets (someone posted them up a few posts) by NO means are they cheaper or low quality- we DID save about 4 K by having DH assemble and install. Also, saved a ton by mostly doing it DIY. Had we had a contractor, the price definitely would have gone up. We still paid about 10k for the cabinets/appliances- in the boxes.
BUT I totally know what you mean about being on the fence- I was too- I will tell you that I LOVE LOVE LOVE my kitchen. If you don't, then definitely keep looking. I don't think an IKEA kitchen would reflect poorly resale wise down the line- we've seen them featured on hGTV shows like Bang for your buck and a bunch of other ones.
Lastly, my mom owes an ocean front coop in LB where a lot of her friends are redoing their kitchens with IKEA- for big bucks!

Try Hanseem cabinets - we got ours at Swan Kitchen Tile and Bath. I love them. We were able to get a stain and a glaze finish for $7K (plus roll outs, etc). Oneo f my contractors damaged a door and they replaced it for free (came to my house) - great company! I also got the custom dishwasher panel.

I am talking about the exact cabinets you have.
I must say that I loved them A LOT MORE a couple of years ago. I really thought they were the cabinets I wanted.
I feel my taste are going "tuscany" lately. Hence, my new love for the Kraftmaid cabinets. But I don't want it to be just a phase.
DH really likes the one at Ikea. It's much more his taste than the glaze type. And if it's not glazed, I am not that much into just the "regular" stains in such case. Then I would like the Ikea just as much.
The price of Ikea is so appealing. I mean they had a whole kitchen on display with double the amount of cabinets I wanted, an island, double oven, appliances, etc... for $17,500 not installed. Much bigger than my own kitchen.
Those Ikea cabinets and a granite and SS appliances would made my kitchen look like a chef kitchen.
In the end, I would still gain from using Ikea cabinets.
I am just a bit confused I guess. I was so set on those Ikea cabinets for years. Now, I am doubting myself, might want something else.
Maybe I will keep looking at Consumers for ideas and see where I stand.
I want a warm kitchen, up to date but not too trendy that looks like I need the bad 70's look remodel in 10 years.

Go with the cabinets you love - they aren't like paint where you change them when you get tired. We have the kraftmaid and are very happy with them. Make sure you go with the upgrade on the plywood though they will be stronger cabinets.
PS we were told that the Thomasville are poorer quality than the Kraftsmaid and you are paying for the name over quality.
