Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
I'm getting custom cabinets from Dynamic Kitchens (a vendor on here), and I'm wondering if there were features that people really loved or hated about their cabinets.
We're getting the soft-close doors and drawers, and pull-out shelves on all the lower cabinets.
I'm thinking about things like the hinged doors in front of the sink for sponges, appliance garages, specially configured cabinets for plates/cookie trays/large bowls, etc.
DW and I aren't big on gadgety things for the kitchen, but maybe there is something that I didn't think of that would be a good idea.

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
pull out spice rack
pot drawers
baking sheet vertical cab
divisions for silverware
ETA - Dynamic lists quite a few of these things as "standard" so keep an eye on that!

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
I figure this thread may be useful for other people, too, so even things that I know I won't use are good to have in this list.
We have a very large pantry, that I built custom shelves for, including a huge spice rack for DW's extensive collection of spices, so we definitely won't be doing a spice drawer, or pull-out pantries. We're definitely doing the pull-out garbage cans.
We're thinking of doing the lazy susan that pivots out of the corner, instead of the one that has a hinged double-door, and just spins. DD was playing with a display unit at HD and had a hard time lining up the "pie wedge" to close the doors properly.
I'm going to find out what options there are for the baking sheets and pots. DW has a lot of large pots, and quite a few baking pans that deserve a proper home....

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
regarding the hinged door for sponges: our cabinet guy said he doesnt recommend them, because the way the wood behind the hinged door works, it doesnt give as much support for the granite countertop above
i also considered asking him to make a built in cutlery divider, but i decided not to because if i ever decide to move the cutlery to another drawer, or get bigger serving spoons or whatever, the new stuff might not fit. i figured id go to the container store and see about getting drawer dividers from there- removable, easy to change
good luck! how long will it take for your kitchen to be ready? ours is taking 8 weeks
we also have a lazy susan in one corner near the oven (with the double door thing), and i also asked for two deep drawers closer to the sink- this way i have two options for storing pots and pans. i will probably use the drawers for pots and pans, and the corner lazy susan for tupperware, since i always manage to have an avalanche of random lids whenever i open a cabinet door lol
are you going to have a hood or a microwave? we did a hood, and the guy made a 'bridge' to connect the crown moldings on the cabinets to the top right and left of the hood Another thing to keep in mind- the style of door you choose might limit your choice of cabinet knobs and pulls. I chose a door with a design that only allows for a narrow pull and skinny knob

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
Gosh I'm full of ideas today lol
One more thing- over our sink I asked for two cabinets with glass in the doors and mullions- those square things. But I didn't want wood shelves in those so I got glass and I also made sure that the shelves would line up with the horizontal lines of the mullions

Thanks!
I'm also thinking that sponges won't dry as well in a door, so you have a dark, damp environment for sponges... . We'll definitely pass on that option, then.
They told us 10-14 weeks, just in case it takes longer, but it will probably be on the short end of that time frame.
I was thinking the same thing about the cutlery dividers.
We're getting a hood (the HomeDepot "designer" we went to earlier couldn't understand why I wanted a hood, and not an over-the-range microwave..... uh.... microwaves don't vent anywhere near the amount of fumes and smoke that a vent does...) I'm not sure if I want to leave the stainless steel hood, or get a wood facade over it. I've seen both styles, and I like both of the looks....
We're getting valances over the windows, to tie in the cabinets on either side, like your "bridge" over the hood.
I also have the room pre-wired for above and below cabinet lighting. I want to have a glow over the cabinets, and wired task lighting under. I can take care of that myself, after the cabinets are installed.

Are you getting wood stained cabinets? White ones? We went with cherry wood with a cherry stain and black glaze
Also are you getting new appliances? We have to. What a rough ride lol

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
We just had our kitchen redone and I LOVE the baking sheet/cutting board cabinet, but I'm not really digging the little pull-out drawer under the sink for sponges. I don't put any in there that are used...so basically, it stores new ones. Which is okay, because it would've been dead space anyway and now I have a use for it...but as you mentioned, a dark, cool spot for damp sponges....ick!
ETA: We have two doors of our cabinets with glass windows...I love that feature...it's just enough for the prettiness, but not so much that I feel like everything is on display. I have a little too much kitchen stuff for us to have all glass doors.

Maple with a medium sort of color (haven't picked it out exactly, but similar to Kraftmaid's "praline" color. All new appliances, too.

We have too much stuff, too for all glass.. There's one corner cabinet that I'm thinking of glass, but not positive on.

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
They also did our kitchen. We got the extended uppers (which I love) - I can't reach the top shelf but we store all kinds of things up there that I don't use often.
Currently, designers are saying to get banks of drawers instead of pull out shelves behind doors (one motion to get to what's inside instead of two). We didn't really have room for many of those but the drawers we do have are great and very useful.
We have the wood hood and love it (vented to the outside of the house).
We also have a cabinet that goes from counter to ceiling - not an appliance garage, but with shelves inside - you could use it for appliances. I find it very useful and it really goes well with the design of the kitchen.
As for the cutlery dividers, we had him make basically just wood pieces that slide into the draw. I love them because I can put a liner down underneath them, and remove them should I decide to use the draw for another purpose.
Cabinet over the fridge is the same depth as the fridge. Again, can't reach in the back without getting on a stool but great to store things there that are not used too often. Or use it as vertical cookie tray/cutting board storage (we have a cabinet for that - love it).

Re: Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
I like my pots & pans drawers, you get more usable space and you don't need to bend over as much. I also like the built in silverware divider as well as the knife drawer (so I don't need the knife block out on the counter).
Have fun doing your kitchen!

Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
Definitely the sliding out cabinets are great! I hate my upper corner cabinet. It's very deep so it holds a lot which is great even with a stool I can't reach the backs. I have to use tongs to grab whatever I need. I don't even remember what's back there! I wish I had a lazy susan up there but it's not big enough for one.

I used Dynamic. I love my cabinets but almost all of my soft close don't work 2 years later, sucks! I got their super Susan(fancy pullout lazy susan) and its nice. The best thing I did was a deep pot drawers and pantry shelves deep enough to hold my KitchenAid and toaster.

Kitchen cabinet features - likes and dislikes?
O saw online once a kitchen had one cabinet with 10 or 12 shelves (for long platters and stuff) I've always wanted that!

We're thinking of doing the lazy susan that pivots out of the corner, instead of the one that has a hinged double-door, and just spins. DD was playing with a display unit at HD and had a hard time lining up the "pie wedge" to close the doors properly.
Assuming that this is what I am thinking of, I used to have one of those in my old apartment and it was GREAT. So much better than a regular lazy suzan - much more usable space with the pivot.
Now in my new apartment we have two lazy regular lazy susans and they annoy me.

Oh that's not quite what I had. My concern with this would be knocking something back into the cabinet... What I had was something where there was a set of shelves that were attached to the cabinet door (it looked just like a regular cabinet door, not hinged in the center) with a track that dragged out another set of shelves from inside the corner.

I think that's called a blind corner pull-out.

If you or your wife does a lot of baking....my favorite feature of our new kitchen is the pull out stand for my stand mixer. It stays in the cabinet when not in use, and when I need it, it's on a hinged platform inside of the cabinet that matches up with the counter...and it's plugged in through the cabinet. Genius!

soft close on the drawers or the doors? If the drawers don't work it is a minor adjustment. If door- those are easily replaced- FM me and let me know and I will have my dad take care of it..
