Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
He said for 23 weeks pregnant, I gained too much weight. (21 pounds)
I am bummed about it, but I can't help that I am always ravishingly hungry. Plus, the first trimester I was so sick.
I even asked him what am I supposed to do when I am starving?????? One time I just about fainted. Well, he had no answer.
So, my question is.... How much did everyone gain at 23 weeks???

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
i don't remember what i gained at that point, but just tell your doctor to shove it. unless all you eat is fast food, cake, cookies and ice cream all day you can't help what your body gains. you will lose it later, worry about staying healthy and comfortable now!!

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
the weight gain thing is sooo highly variable! If you're not overweight (like me), you should be gaining approx 35 lbs throughout your pregnancy..... a good deal of it comes in the 3rd trimester.
that being said, a lot of moms on this board have gained similar amounts to you . I wouldn't worry. You might want to try to add some new and exciting healthy options to your diet to quell further gain (yogurts and fruit salad work for me)
don't worry too much about it!

Perfectly said (as usual)
I gained @ 25 lbs at that time. As long as you and baby are healthy he can go scratch!

Thanks Ladies!!!
Everything looked great today with baby. That is what I am most concerned about.
It was just the way he said, that I gained too much weight. He then proceeded..... gaining too much weight, you will have to get a c-section and it will be harder to get off the weight after baby.
Maybe I'm being too sensitive but it upset me.

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
I don't think you can easily go by what others have gained.
I am 23 weeks this week and have only gained 2 lbs. I have always been average weight my whole life, in the middle of my weight range for my height and age. I started off this pg about 15lbs over what I have been my entire life. I have always been a VERY big eater, when not pg.
This pg has flipped it all, in that I am just not half as hungry now as I usually am. So all of our bodies are different. For me, it's very odd that I am NOT hungry, when before being pg, I would wake up planning breakfast, lunch and dinner.
I really think if you are that hungry, then that's what your body is telling you and you are going on that. Just as I am not that hungry, I am going with what my body is telling me. In my case, my dr is not concerned that I didn't gain more than I have, b/c he feels that there are many variables in pg for each woman.
Did you start the pg off thin, average or over the weight range for your height/weight? I think that has a lot to do with how much we gain.

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
I wanted to tell you, at my 28 week appointment, the doctor said, "You are good with your weight, so you don't have to gain any more." He was dead serious.
Oh yeah...I'll do my best doc, like I have a freakin' choice in the matter.
And just bc you gain extra weight doesn't mean you are going to have to have a c-section...that was so stupid for him to say.

I am a pretty healthy eater by nature and snack mostly on apples with peanut butter, air popped corn, cottage cheese with fresh fruit and veggies with hummus. I am also very active and was concerned about my minimal weight gain, but the doctor says as long as I eat regulary and frequently I am fine. I also pig out on sweets on occasion, but since my recent diagnosis of Hypoglycemia...I have to refrain...

Yes, I agree....that was stupid for him to say.
He also said, the more weight you gain the bigger the baby. Um...my mom gained only 10 lbs with me and I was the biggest baby (8lbs. 14 oz.)

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
I also want to add to my above post, I am shocked as anything that I have only gained 2 lbs at 23 weeks. I was very scared that since I have always had a HUGE appetite, always been a huge eater, that I would get even more so when I was pg. I love to eat, and I love eating out, and I love high calorie foods. It's just that I am just simply NOT craving anything and NOT hungry, like my old pre-preg self ALWAYS was. DH used to tell me I had a tapeworm b/c I always ate so much. I just don't feel that way since being pg...It's not something I am choosing to do or trying to control, it's hormonal, as I suspect your hunger is hormonal as well. How are we supposed to control that?
So my point is, I think pg really changes our bodies' "norms" and our old "norms" are not what our "pg norms" are.

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
well, if you're shopping around for low cal snacks....
I'm also in the low-weight gain group (19 lbs @ 34 weeks), and frankly it's likely in part because I never got that huge appetite that some women get.... and to answer your question, YEP, sometimes I have to force myself to eat and drink to avoid headaches and dizziness... I know, it's the opposite extreme of the preggo spectrum.
but becuase of my GD, I am really not gaining much, even in the 3rd trimester. so if you're looking for lower cal snacks, try some of the snacks from the GD diet! Even if you substitute these foods and drinks for 60% of the time, you'll reduce weight gain drastically
Instead of desserts and high cal snacks/chips:
Cut up melon and fruit crunchy granola bars unsweetened yogurt + thawed frozen strawberries or other berries (I also add a teaspsoon of sugar) trail mix
for drinks (instead of soda and juice): water with lemon or lime juice unsweetened decaf ice tea
hope this helps!

Being you are not hungry. What do you eat? Do you have to like force yourself to eat something??
Ok perfect example. As I type to you, it was 3:30 and I still had not eaten one thing today (I woke up late but still). I just forced myself to go downstairs and make something to eat.
Since food hasn't been appealing, I am eating high calorie foods when I do eat to make up for hte lack of calories when I am not eating. So I made Gino's pizza rolls which are fattening and indulgent.
When I do eat, I eat WHATEVER tastes good. Pizza, full fat cheese, full fat mayo and full fat salad dressing. All things I would typically limit myself on, I am not limiting now b/c I am doing whatever I can to eat something that actually tastes decent. But the thing is, I normally might eat those things when not pg, along with a million other things throughout the day.
Pre-pg, I would normally eat a BIG breakfast every am. Two eggs, toast, etc...now I barely have the desire for even a bowl of cereal. I used to eat 2 eggs at least 4 times a week in the am, I have only had eggs 3 times in the last 6 mths. Just NOT in the mood for them, and can't get them down so easily.
So right now, when I do eat, I eat whatever it is that seems like it might taste good b/c it's the only way to get some calories in me.
I hope I made sense. It makes me nervous that I am barely hungry and have to remind myself to eat. I have never been this way in my entire life...and it's very odd and I just can't control it.
I think it will ALL work out, drs just give their speech to us as patients as ideals...

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
i am up 21 lbs at 25 weeks and a few days.. I heard the speech too, and what is weird is i hardly gained too much first trimester..this past month i gained 8lbs! I was also told that a growth spurt can occur and sometimes weight fluctuates during second tirmester...my doc told me the last month of the 3rd some women even loose a few pounds. Soo, i am watching it now for the next two months but seriously, i am over it! I was so upset bc i was doing soo well and boom, one crappy huge weight gain month. Truth be told, everyone is different and dont sweat it. Your body knows what it needs and as long as it doesnt affect you Diabetes wise or anything, hang in there and dont beat yourself up. Good news is if you were active before and up to pregnancy you will take off the weight if you start up right after the baby is born. Plus, if you decide to breastfeed you can take off the weight at about a pound a week just doing that.

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
Well I certainly hope I don't get yelled at tonight by my doctor, I get weighed in tonight so we will see how much I'm up. I'm 25 weeks now and I know I'm up 20 lbs by now, at my last appt I thought I was going to get yelled at since I was shocked I was up 16 lbs at 20 weeks but he said I'm fine for my size, nurse said the same thing. So far the weight has all gone to my belly, I eat when I'm hungry, I don't pig out and would hate it if I had to hold back when I'm starving! I guess some docs are a lot stricter than others....sorry you got scolded! I think your total weight gain at 23 weeks is normal...

Re: Just got yelled @ from Dr.....
I'm gaining at the same rate as you. At 23 weeks I was up 21.5 lbs, and I think I'm up another 1 or 2 since then (25 weeks now). My doctor hasn't yelled at me yet, but I go again on Thurs so we'll see what he says. I gained a lot..too much...in the first trimester because I had to eat (and eat only carbs) to not feel sick. So what am I supposed to do now? I can't lose that extra weight til after the baby and since then I think I've been gaining what I'm supposed to. I was average size (4 or 6) before pregnancy and a normal weight. I don't stuff myself, but I don't let myself go hungry at all either. I also had to stop exercising because of previa. So if my doc told me to stop gaining, I don't know what I'd do! Good luck!!!

Umm...gaining a lot of weight does not automatically equal getting a c-section.
My sister was small when she got pregnant but let me tell you BOY DID SHE ENJOY EATING while pregnant.....
My sister gained 70lbs!!!
She had a normal vaginal delivery, I think her labor lasted 8 hours.
She lost 30lbs in the first 4 weeks and was down to her pre-pregnacy weight 6 months later!!!
ETA: My nephews birth weight was 7 lbs 11 ozs................

That really doesn't sound like a lot to me. Are you overweight, normal weight or underweight?
I think everyone's bodies react differently to pregnancy. Some people hardly put on weight while others gain a lot regardless of how active they are or how healthy they eat. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I was normal weight before getting pg. like a size 5/6, sometimes 7 depending on the brand.
