Just got all my IVF meds and....
I feel like crying. I cannot believe how much was in that bag. How am I going to be able to do this?
This is what the bag contained:
progesterone novarel estraderm patch syringe (22g) dexamethasone menopur doxycycline needle (27 1/2 g) needle (22g) asprin medrol lupron progesterone caps
Can anyone explain what all this is?!? The nurse was a bit vague, and I really need clarification.
Also, I start lupron on Sunday and I am assuming I use the actual syringe that I can draw the meds up into - is that correct?
And lastly, what has to be refridgerated? Nothing on the med description indicated that it needs to be refridgerated but I thought the injectable medication does.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I am feeling very overwhelmed

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
Nope...everything you have is okay to just be stored...
Don't look at all the drugs at once...you are only going to be doing one or two at a time and they will be explained to you as you go. It's extremely intimidating, but you will be fine.
You draw with the syringe and change the needles before injecting. You should have plenty of extra needles.

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
I agree with the PPs - it is VERY overwhelming at first, but you will not be using everything at once.
I kept everything hidden away in my closet and only pulled out what I needed every night, which was only a couple. Trust me, you WILL be able to do this!! What you have right now covers EVERYTHING.
It seems like I was on a slightly different protocol, but any syringe you use to draw the powder or the med out, you switch. We used the "big" needle to mix meds and then you switch to the little one for the SQ injections.
Even with the Novarel, we switched to a different "big" needle - they say the tip dulls a little during the mixing/drawing process, so it would sting more if you used it (although you could).

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
Thanks for the advice.
I received 20 syringes (that I'm assuming I draw the meds up with), and then switch to a needle. I only received 10 of one sized needle, and 5 of another. I could have sworn the nurse at the doctor told me today I didn't have to switch the needle after drawing the lupron (but that seemed so weird to me). Plus, the needle is HUGE and so long.

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
I don't remember switching needles with the lupron. But, it was back in March and my memory is bad lately. Keep thinking its August for some reason (destroying my whole summer).
Do you have a website to go to for a quick brush up/reference for the injects? It always helped calm me down and remind me what I needed to do. In case you don't here is freedom pharmacy's video link:
injection videos
Good luck.

Hi, I took lupron while under the care of my last dr. I never switched syringes... I drew it into an insulin needle and injected it with the same needle. GL sweetie!!!

lupron usually comes with smaller needles. The syringes you have have a huge needle attached. You will open it up, and for some meds screw off the big needle and screw on a little one.
I only see one stimming med there. Are they only stimming you with menopur.
To make you feel better, my last delivery included 10 boxes of menopur (you know how big they are) and 10 of bravelle, which are the same size. My MIL freaked out when she saw how much there was.

I am a dummy and realized that the LARGE needles were not for the lupron I do have some very large syringes, but I am assuming they are used to draw up the other injectables and then I change the needle to the smaller ones?
Now I'm worried that I am only on one stim med. Is that normal? This is my first IVF cycle and I very new to all of this.

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
Just remember that all RE protocols are different. Some stim with only Menopur and some add another like gonal-f.
Yeah the large syringe is probably for the menopur. You have to mix that with the large needle and then take the lg needle off and put the nice small 27 1/2g needle on. Should be a little syringe for the lupron. You will feel like you should have gone to nursing school in no time.
Good luck, you will do fine.

The big needle is for drawing progesterone. You draw what you need and then switch to the injector needle. You will be fine. I was shocked when I got mine but my DH helped me figure it all out and it truly does become second nature. I think menopur is the hardest and you don't appear to be using that

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
Question for you - what kind of progesterone are you going to be on? Is it in oil (liquid) or did you get suppositories? I know with progesterone for the IM shot, you should change the needle once you draw it up. It goes in easier with a fresh 22g needle. Actually, they gave me 18g needle to draw the progesterone with but no reason you can't use a 22g needle.
I'm not familiar with Novarel is that a subQ or IM shot?

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
I really appreciate all of your advice ladies.
But I must say, I almost feel a little left out in the dark. When I ask the nurse what to do, she explains it so matter of fact that I should completely understand. I almost feel like an idiot. How do I know exactly which needles to use for what? I know I haven't officially started yet, but since there is no specific injection class (and just the websites), I really have a feeling I am going to have no idea what to do. And I start lupron on Sunday.
I've done gonal-f before, but that's so easy with the pen

Did your lupron come in a box w/ syringes in it? If so, I can walk you through the lupron I did it my last cycle. And I promise, it's not as scary as it looks I was TERRIFIED, and it was just as easy as the gonal-f

Re: Just got all my IVF meds and....
The only think I didn't see listed was the smaller lupron syringe. I think mine had an orange cap or something was orange on it. You need to call your nurse if you don't see this, and see if they wanted you to use the bigger syringe for lupron. Do you know your dosage for Sunday? Meanwhile I know I have extra in my box. That is all you need to focus on for the right now. Once you know what needle and dosage for Sunday you will be fine. When do you go back for monitoring? They should guide you the whole way.

I found them! They are small like you said (thank goodness).
I received these VERY large syringes too, in addition to two different sized needles. I'm assuming those will be used for the other 2384845 viales I have

Some of them might be for the PIO shots. I looked up how to do them on youtube and saw a few different videos- and they mentioned drawing the PIO up w/ one needle and then switching to a different needle. HTH!
