just felt a lump in my breast

I'm so scared right now. I just felt a quarter sized lump in my breast. It definitely wasn't there yesterday (at least not of a size that I would have noticed) but I felt it right off this morning. Of course it's the weekend and I can't contact the dr to make an appt. Chat Icon

ETA: I'm doing what you shouldn't and Googling. Most of the people say that typically non-cancerous lumps are painful, but this one isn't. I'm almost 47 and have had wonky period lately (I assume for perimenopause) so it could be that, but I've never had lumps before and this one doesn't hurt.

Re: just felt a lump in my breast

I can relate. This happened to me last year. I felt a lump not painful. Long story short it was fine. I had a cystic nodule I think it was called. Something that is now noted in my chart. I’m 38 and dr said very common for women in their 30s and 40s to have breast changes like this to come up and to be diligent about checking. Don’t google! It will be ok. You will get it checked it out. You’re doing all you can.

Easier said than done, but try to stay off of google. Monday will be here before you know it. You can get in to see your dr and find out what’s going on. Like the PP said, it could just be nodule or cyst. At 40, I now have multiple cysts in each breast. Never had this before. Can’t be felt (yet) but changes happen as we age

My grandma has "lumpy" breasts that has never been anything. MIL was told to go pick out a grave site back in the late 70's because she was dying of breast cancer. She didn't have cancer and is still well and kicking all these years later.

Definitely go get checked out ASAP but it doesn't necessarily have to be something awful. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had a lump which was benign, though I opted to have it removed and am glad I did. I couldn't feel my lump so I can't say if it hurt. I didn't have any pain.

Good luck. Be optimistic. Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had the same thing, I’m a little more than 10 years younger than you..it was my dr that felt it and sent me for my first mammogram and then biopsy..
It was scary
But it was nothing
Get it checked for a piece of mind
Best of luck xo

Re: just felt a lump in my breast

I had this happen to me last year, it was large. It seems like there was nothing there to a large lump the next day. I did the google thing, it's difficult not to. But anyway it turns out I had a cystic nodule, I made an appointment with Zwanger. They were able to aspirate and I was in and out of there in under half hour. I went for my mammo and sono on Friday and all is well.

Hang in there, I know it's super scary but I'm sure it'll turn out be not much.

I keep telling myself it's just related to perimenopause. I had my last mammogram last Aug so it's due but not like I haven't had one in a long time. I'm definitely calling asap tomorrow morning. Stinks bc I moved here in March and haven't had time to find new drs so hopefully I can find one that takes new patients on the same day.

Re: just felt a lump in my breast

Oh no! I've been there - it's terrifying. Unfortunately for me, my lump turned out to be cancer but MOST lumps are benign!

Stop googling. Seriously, just step away from it. I know it's hard to do that but trust me on this.

Call your doctor first thing in the morning. They should be able to give you a referral for a mammo without seeing you and then call every radiology center that's covered by your insurance until you find one that can see you same day. There are always cancellations so you should be able to get an appointment somewhere to get some answers.

Best of luck. Message me if you'd like to talk. It sucks and it's so scary. Xoxo

just felt a lump in my breast

Same thing happened to me, I was 37 weeks pregnant and felt a lump. My doctor said it was probably a milk duct but sent me for a sonogram. Well what I felt was a cyst but they found another lump I didn’t know about. I went for a biopsy and they put a marker in. Thankfully it came back benign. I never had pain or anything.

Best of luck

What are the biopsys like? I'm super afraid of needles and the idea of all of it is overwhelming (especially since I'm new to the area and don't have a local support system - and since I'm going thru a separation).

it is scary but you might not need a biopsy. I too have been there with lumps. First speak to your MD. Take a few deep breaths and try not to let the unknown stress you. GL

I had a core needle biopsy. I was very nervous about it but it wasn't a big deal. To be honest, I still hate the dentist more. They will give you a local anesthetic and it's very quick. I ended up going alone because DD had to be at camp and I preferred for DH to take her rather than mess up her day. I had hardly any pain after and none during.

If you do need a biopsy, you may need about 5 days if you've been taking certain vitamins/supplements. I don't remember the specifics. I had my mammo/sono on a Friday, biopsy the next Tuesday and got results very early Friday morning.

The anxiety leading up to a biopsy - IF you need one, and that's a big "IF" - is worse than the procedure itself. It doesn't last long, maybe 20-30 minutes and a good amount of that time is spent numbing the patient and talking the patient through what is going on. You will feel some minor discomfort, but it's not painful. Just focus on your breathing and talk to the medical staff if you are very scared. They will talk you through it all. Recovery from it isn't bad - ice packs, OTC stuff for pain (I think I took Motrin but it was so long ago I can't remember), and it's sore for a few days, like when you are due for your period and your breasts get tender/sore - that kind of pain. Very manageable.

Best of luck today. I'm sorry you're going through this alone; you can PM me if you need a friend to talk to Chat Icon

I have had 2 biopsies and agree with all of this - the anxiety leading up to it is definitely worse than the actual procedure. Is it the most fun thing you'll ever do? Definitely not. BUT, it's really not as bad as you think it will be.

Good luck! Hope it turns out to be nothing to worry about

This has happened to me a few times over the past few years. Each time I had different lumps. Different in size and texture i guess. It's super scary and the anxiety while you are waiting for the dr and the tests and the results is horrible. I wound up not needed biopsies on any of my lumps. My dr sent me to a breast surgeon after we found my first lump. I now see him regularly and I went for Mammos, sonos and MRI's every six months for a year and a half. Now it's yearly again as long as there are no changes in my breasts. I forgot what he called it but my breast surgeon told me to stop drinking so much coffee. That it could be from the caffeine. He also told me that most of the time lumps are benign and not to freak out right away...easier said than done! Good luck! I hope it turns out to be nothing!!

Thanks so much everyone!

I just saw someone - she doesn't *think* it's cancer, but obviously can't say for sure. Mammogram scheduled for next Monday. At least I don't have to wait a week with her thinking it could be cancer!

Its good you got it checked and going for further checks. I just experienced this - felt a lump and went for a mammogram and a breast ultrasound - where they found something but it turned out fine - thinks it was just a contusion - hit into something and didn't remember. Good luck!

Okay good! I feel like if the doctor thought it was anything bad, they would have rushed a mammo for you ASAP.
