Juice - When can you start?

DD is 5 months old, and my mom suggested we can start giving her watered down apple juice. LO started solids at 4 months and has tolerated everything we have given her so far. Is it too soon to start with watered down apple juice?

Re: Juice - When can you start?

You can start now but honestly, I never really saw the need to give my DD juice early on. She didn't need it, it's just empty calories. Instead she got her bottles and just plain water in a sippy so she could practice drinking. I really didn't give her juice until well after age one and even then it was very infrequent and more of a 1/4 juice 3/4 water ratio. She's just about 5 and still isn't a juice drinker, she LOVES water especially and milk with meals.

I wouldn't bother with juice, stick to formula and water. Might as well start early setting up good habits when it comes to drinking. JMO. Chat Icon

Juice - When can you start?

My ped said no juice yet. He said to start water at her 6mo appointment.

DS is 8 months and he's only had juice once and that was watered down prune juice to help with consipation. My Mother also kept asking about giving him apple juice; but I also thought it was just empty calories. That it would be best to just give him breastmilk and water from the sippy cup for practice.

Juice - When can you start?

Thanks everyone. That is what I thought, I would love for her to stay clear of the sugars and empty calories.

Re: Juice - When can you start?

Only gave it at that age for constipation. They say Pear Juice is good for that. Now at 2 I still water down the juice.

Re: Juice - When can you start?

Mine are 3 1/2 and have had juice maybe twice. I just don't really see the need for the extra sugars and calories and I try to avoid it as much as possible for as long as I can!

Re: Juice - When can you start?

I don't think my oldest had juice until 2 or 3. There is no need to give them juice. My boys still prefer water over juice. it is more of a treat at parties or bbq's then a staple in our house.

My DD is 2 and I just started giving her watered down OJ on some mornings when she sees me having some. She otherwise just drinks a cup if milk, and water the rest of the day. My ped said they don't recommend juice for babies anymore bc of the sugar/cavities.

We started orange juice at 1 yr but only because he would not drink milk so I game him 4 oz of OJ fortified with calcium and vitamin D. I don't give him any other type of juice at home.

Re: Juice - When can you start?

Water and formula only for now. she love water, why mess with a good thing?

She's really good about eating fruits so I see no reason to add juice even if it's 100% or even the V8 splashes... veggie on the other hand....

At daycare, I think once she's in the toddler room they include juice with one meal. I'm ok with that.

Re: Juice - When can you start?

My kids are two and only have juice (watered down) on special occasions like birthday parties or BBQs. But my mom is asking ALL the time why I do not give juice regularly. They were all sick this weekend and I asked her to pick me up some apple juice to try and get some fluids in them. My mom was shocked that I did not have juice in the house. I think its just a different generation. 20-30 years ago it was very typical to give juice at 6 months old. Noone ever saw and issue with it. I think that is why parents/grandparents are always pushing this issuing on the new generation.

Re: Juice - When can you start?

I started at 6mos with prune juice for constipation. The dr told me NOT to water it down bc that is more filling with less of the prune benefit. So she has that from time to time.

i agree-my Mom is always asking about giving DS juice. I told her there was no need for it. They did things differently back when our parents were raising us.
