Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

Growing up my mom was so strict about not letting anyone wear shoes in the house, not only for dirt but to keep the carpet looking clean. I hated it, i hated asking friends to take their shoes off, guests weren't thrilled either.

I recently got my wood floors redone, 2nd time in 2.5 years and the main reason was cause of shoes and scratches and how crappy they looked. I want to avoid having to do this again anytime soon. So I have implemented no shoes allowed
I tell everyone before hand, so its not a surprise. Most people bring slippers

Also want to save my furniture, the wood tables have large pedastals and i feel shoes scraping and rubbing against it will ruin it fast

So is this the norm? No one else that i know has this policy except my mom

everyone wears their shoes on in the house (guests) for dh and myself we usually take our shoes off when we change into pjs which is right before dinner unless we are going out then we just take our shoes off.

It is shoes off, unless we are having a party with quite a few people over, then I don't want 75 pairs of shoes in my entryway.

But most people who come in take their shoes off.

My mom and my MIL have always had a 'no shoes' in the house rule.

Shoes off! My mom and MIL have the same policy so it's normal for me. But, if we're having a lot of people over, I don't say anything.

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

I dont have a policy... I mean, how can I tell my 20 superbowl guests that they have to take their shoes off and pu back on numerous times bc some are smokers and must go outside to smoke... I would love to keep the house clean, but really, it just isnt doable IMO...

But I have to say, I have had people come in and ask if they needed to take their shoes off... which is sooooo thoughtful on their part...

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

I feel that it's strange to ask guests to remove their shoes. I know I feel uncomforatble when someone asks me to do that. I think that when having guests they should be made to feel comfortable, kwim.

In terms of carpeting, I feel if people are worried about people getting it dirty with their shoes, they shouldn't have gotten light colored carpeting.

That being said, i do not wear my shoes in the house and i ask DH and my parents (who are over everyday so they no longer count as guests) to take off their shoes only bc we have a baby who spends time on the floor and I read that you can reduce 95% of the toxins you bring into the house by taking off your shoes.

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

I am a no shoes person in general. Most of the time when I go to people's homes (close friends and family. If it a stranger I don't ask, I keep them on), I get there and ask if I can take my shoes off. I just hate wearing shoes in general.
When I moved into my current apt 3 yrs ago, I said it was going to be a no shoes home because it is wall to wall capreting and I did not want to be vacuuming all the time. For me, I go up the stairs and the shoes come off. DH not so much. But we will hopefully be moving soon.

This exactly.

ETA: As far as guests go, we don't have a "policy". I'd prefer it if they removed their shoes, but it's okay if they don't.

No shoes but I don't ask people to take them off. If you come often you know our rules, if not I steam my floors 2x a week Chat Icon

i generally take my shoes off when i get home, but that's more for comfort than cleanliness. DH usually does the same
(unless its the summer, then sandals/flip flops don't really bother me)

i don't ask anyone to take their shoes off when they come in, unless we were having lots of people over and it was raining out

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

I hate having to take my shoes off at other ppl's houses and I don't ask anyone to do it in mine.

To be honest, I hate seeing other ppl in socks. I know that's weird, but it grosses me out.

Shoes on.

I am uncomfortable if someone asks me to remove my shoes at their house, so I wouldn't do it to my own guests. I can sweep up & mop if needed when they leave.

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

WE take our shoes off when we get home. However, if I were having a dinner party or a get together of any kind I would never think of asking my guests to take off their shoes. I feel like when I go to a party I put thought into my outfit and my shoes are a very big part of that. I would personally feel very uncomfortable having to be at a party etc. at someones house in barefoot or even in socks in that situation.

However, a quick pop-in or casual visit is a different thing.

Shoes off only in the downstairs den where the kids hangout. Hey, I know none of them wipe their feet before they come in. Other than there, no.

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

It's very common in asian households to have a 'no shoe' policy.

I would imagine that families with babies may also have this policy just to keep the floor clean for crawling little ones.

In my household, it's also 'no shoes' and it's quite obvious because we have a large shoe shelf in our foyer which is signal for everyone entering to take off their shoes. ;)

Don't be afraid to ask your guests to take their shoes off, it's your house, your rules.

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

we try not to wear our shoes in the house mostly b/c i'm weird with germs and dirt Chat Icon i always take my shoes off unless i'm rushing or just running in for something and going back out...

guests can wear their shoes...i just ask if they go upstairs to take their shoes off b/c it is all carpet up there (and again, it's for germs really - i can wash and disinfect my hard flooring but i can't have the carpets steamed everytime i have guests).

however i'm getting my pottery barn area rug this week and it was expensive and i'm already cringing thinking about people walking on it with their shoes onChat Icon Chat Icon but i just can't imagine saying you have to take your shoes off - kwim?

if someone laid on my couch or bed with shoes on that would really gross me out...floors are meant to walk on - but shoes on the couch bothers me (like laying down - not sitting)

Re: Is your home Shoes ON or Shoes OFF?

DH and I take our shoes off, but i have no rule implemented. When DH's family comes over they are so used to always taking off their shoes at other people's houses that they do it at mine. While my family always leaves their shoes on.

I remember when DH and I stated dating, I hating always having to take my shoes off at his family's houses... I would always buy fun cool socks so when my shoes were off I would still have my socks as my accessory!

Even now when I am home and people are coming over and my shoes are off...cool socks are on! Chat Icon

We're shoes off, unless it's summer and then we have no issue, but rain and snow track in so much mud, salt, etc.

We wear slippers around the house.

I voted other...it's guests' choice although I hope they would take them off when it's wet out or wipe them really well.
