Is this kind of rude?
I had to send a professional email to 3 people - 2 women and one man (all outside of my organization, all professional - attorneys). The email itself was somewhat informal, but not casual. I started off the email with "Good afternoon. . . " and then an email conversation between myself and the other 2 women followed (the male had not yet responded). We came to a point where we were just waiting for a response from the male, to confirm a date for something. When he responded, he addressed his email "Ladies: . . ." Is it just me, or is that really not proper or professional? It just kind of irked me, but not really sure why.

Re: Is this kind of rude?
I guess it would be no different than typing "Gentlemen". Which to me, sounds more appropriate than "Ladies".
For an inter-office email; I wouldn't find it rude. But maybe you find it rude since he is not a co-worker sorta speak. Conversation would be more relaxed.

you're right - didn't think of the comparison to Gentlemen, which would be fine. For some reason, using the term "Ladies" just seems somewhat derogatory to me. Guess it's just "a thing" for me for some reason

I was in a similar situation and used ladies bc it was easier as I was speaking to more than one person. All the peps involved I knew, but got in trouble for using that term.
I don't think its rude, but not used often

I wouldn't find it rude although I have stopped myself from writing "Ladies" before in emails to a few women and actually written out everyone's names.

Not at all, I think its fine. Perhaps he knows the other two more, and since your tone was casual, he used "ladies" - once in this chaotic meeting, when both sides were talking over each other, my MD stood up and said "simmer down boys and girls" - we took it in stride

Its not rude but it's not professional IMO.
I like it when names are used in that situation.

Re: Is this kind of rude?
I think it's appropriate. It's just part of "Ladies and Gentlemen, may I have your attention"....

I don't think it's professional. Changes are if it were all men he wouldn't have written "gentlemen." I once had a Judge call myself, my client, and the opposing party (all female) up to the bench by saying "ladies, you can come back up" and I was really perturbed.

Ok - maybe I was just having an I-don't-want-to-be-back-to-work-after-5-days-off-it's-too-f'n-cold-out cranky day. But it still just doesn't sound right to me

I don't see anything wrong with it at all. You're all ladies so that's how he addressed you.

Re: Is this kind of rude?
Maybe I'm not professional enough ( ), but I don't understand how that can be taken as rude. Not being snarky at all, seriously just don't see what's wrong with it.
I use it all the time at work when addressing women in an email.

A female colleague and I were once called "lawyerettes" by a judge - so I guess relatively speaking this isnt so bad

I see nothing wrong with it. My boss will address emails to multiple females - myself included - as "Ladies" or "Gals." I work in the construction industry.
