Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
babysitting your DC? Do you have a preference? Would you say one is better than the other? Just curious.

Nope, I don't have a preference. They both are very good with Ella.

Yes, there is a big difference. My MIL lives in Florida and has only seen DD about 3 or 4 times.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
Yup. My mom is better IMO. She is ten years younger and healthier (BF's mom has been a smoker all her life and can barely go three steps without having to stop and gasp for air). Plus my mom is more hands on, animated, and non-stop with my son - sings to him in Greek, dances around with him, talks to him 24/7, etc. Where as BF's mom just kind of holds him, scratches him under the chin, and says "hi, hi, hi, hi" to him fifty ZILLION times and then puts him down. I just feel more comfortable with my mom and that's why she watches Athan every day for us.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
My inlaws have ALOT of grandchildren. THey are also much older - it's hard for my MIL to get around so she could not take care of Jack.
He is also extremely heavy to carry and she cannot lift him. My mom can hold him only for a few mins and she is in perfect health.
My family has only babysat for him so far.
Like I tell my parents "If you can't babysit then I'm not going! "
When my parents are at the events with me then my cousins babysit for me...I put my time in with their kids!
ETA: I was actually surprised how many girls answered that their children slept at their In-laws house. That just wouldn't happen with Jack.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
Yes huge difference. DD is my Mom's world......she will drop anything and do anything for her.
My MIL on the other hand while she loves DD is much more "involved" with my SIL's two kids. We were just at a party this past weekend and everytime someone asked me something about Bella in front of MIL she would reply comparing my SILs DD who is 1 year old. I wanted to bytch slap her. Also my MIL is always depressed and complaining..........such a downer. I would much rather have DD around my Mom and even DH feels the same.

Very big difference. My MIL is not into kids. not even mine. We don't speak or associate with her, so there's no question that there's a difference. Meanwhile to me, my mother watching my child is like me watching my own child.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
Yes - DH and I only allow my parents to watch DD. MIL asks all the time to watch DD but my DH won't let her. He doesn't trust her - she is the type that would answer the phone and get into a convo with a friend and not watch DD well - then he fears if something happened to DD (fall etc) she wouldn't tell us b.c she would be afraid of getting in trouble.
We trust my parents completely with DD - she loves going over there and has fun - doesn't cry at all - BUT she does from time to time go to the front door and sit and stare at it and even when playing she will look at the door for us (as my mom tells me).

My mom is better, not that MIL is bad but my mom is better at everything, LOL.
Dh would admit that too, but I would totally leave them with my MIL overnight or at thier house, I would just be mroe comfy at my mom's.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
honestly, my mom and step-dad are around my DS much more then my father and step mom and MIL and FIL. They really make such an effort to see my DS. My stepdad's retired, my mom has one day off a week, so they are alway offering to babysit him, so i totally trust them as they know his schedules, his moods, etc. My mom even slept over last night to watch him today so i can make up a day of work.
Unfortunately my MIL is older and has health issues, so she can only really watch him for a couple hours, (even though she hasn't in a while b/c our schedules havent worked out). She is actually going to watch him one day this summer for me, but we are playing it by ear, If its to much for her, then my SIL will take over.
My dad and stepmom also haven't really babysat him b/c they work long hours and have my little brother still in the house. Plus i feel bad asking them/bothering them b/c they are so busy. I am sure if i did ask more though they would do it in a second. so based on the above answers...while i trust all the grandparents, i do trust my mom and step-dad more, but really just b/c they make the effort to see him so they know him best.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
There sure is!! MIL is older than my mom. My mom runs a business out of the house. When MIL watches DD she spends 100% of the time doing just that . . . watching DD, playing with her, entertaining her etc. When my mom watches her there is alot of TV involved. Too much and it doesn't matter how many times I tell my mother we don't let her watch TV, when I get there to pick up DD she is sitting in front of the TV.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
absolutely. ii feel like my mom "knows" what to do. If she comes over, ella is whisked out of my arms, changed fed and entertained. My MIL just kinds of sits there with her and with a 14month old, that just doesn't roll. i won't let my MIL watch DD by herself, i don't trust her.

I wouldn't leave Maddie with my mother because she doesn't watch her. She goes about her daily life and will check in on Maddie, but she's doesn't watch her, if that makes sense. I leave my DD with my MIL without a second thought. she is wonderful.

I have no preference, I'm just happy when either one gets some alone time with the girls and DH and I get out of the house!
Why wouldn't you trust the mother of your DH? She raised the man you fell in love with and chose to have children with That's how i see it.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
Yes. Definitely a difference. Depending on who you ask, there is different opinions on "better".
My mom cares for them, feeds them healthy meals, etc. Goes to their events, takes care of them when they're sick, etc.
My MIL overcompensates for time she hasn't seen them & gives them anything they want, never wants to be the bad guy, etc. Case in point when she asked me at 6am if they could have cookies....um...NO! However, my MIL gets on the floor & plays with them for hours.
My mom doesn't do that, but she will snuggle them & do hair, nails, make-up or discuss spiderman ad nauseum.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
My MIL has been visiting for two weeks and has only changed a diaper twice. I would not leave DD with her right now. Maybe when she is older.
BOTH of my prents watch DD while I work now so you know my answer.

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
MIL watches DD 3 times/week, so she's used to it and is great with DD. But when my mom's in town, she stays with us, and she's great with DD.
I'm very lucky, they're both great with her!

Re: Is there a difference between your mom and mother-in-law in
No difference.... My ILs watch the baby 3 days a week. In fact they are both there today. My parents are in NY, but we have no problem leaving the kids with them when they visit us or when we go to NY. We are going to NY in June and plan on leaving the kids with them while we drive down to DC to see some friends.
