Is spotting common in the beginning? -UPDATE please read

I just had the scare of my life...I wiped and there was blood. It's not too much, and when I called the dr. he said it is fairly common and to be concerned if it is more than a period.
I am going for a sono tomorrow just to be safe, although being that I am only 6 weeks we may not be able to see the heartbeat yet.

So, my question is, did you spot in the beginning?
ETA: If you did, how long did it last, and how much blood was it?

UPDATE: I went to the dr. and they did a sono but only saw a sac, no heartbeat and no embryo. Dr. said I might only be 5 weeks instead of 6, and if that is the case then the pic is right where it should be. Also told me a I have a heart shaped uterus which means there could be some complications, but that is the least of my worries. Since this was my 1st month off the pill, there is no date they can go by for when I conceived bc I never got my period off the pill. So......he sent me for bloodwork to do a blood preggo test, then I need to go again on Wed. for more bloodwork, to make sure the #'s are doubling.

Needless to say it was one of the most stressful days of my life, and now it is just a waiting game to see if the #'s are doubling and to see if there is a heartbeat when we go for another sono next Tuesday.

Please say a prayer that everything will be ok, as I am terrified that something might be wrong, although I am trying to stay positive. TIA!

Re: Is spotting common in the beginning?

I went through the same thing last sunday. I wiped and then freaked out. I actually went to the ER and they did a sono to make sure everything was ok. It didn't last more then a couple of hours and there wasn't nearly enough blood from what they told me to be concerned. My doctor said 50% of women spot in the 1st trimester. Since last week it has happened once or twice and when I wiped there was a faint trace of pink the the paper. I totally understand how you are feeling but from what I understand it is normal.

BTW: At the sono I was 5 weeks and 5 days and we saw a heartbeat! Good Luck Tomorrow.

Re: Is spotting common in the beginning?

yes its very common(coming from a girl who searched these boards like crazy)

with the last pregnancy when i m/ced it, i called the office it was heavy like a period, and bad but not horrible cramps,i went into the office next to find out i was losing the baby naturally. i knew something was wrong though because the cramps were strong, and it was heavy enough. there are a few girls on here who actually did have a heavy bleed and baby was still ok.

If its lighter like spotting. It does seem to be ok with the baby and goes away. People recommend keeping the feet up, and it will dry up, but maybe come back again at some point.

I actually had that recently, it was light, and only light cramping, it started to go away within a couple hours, and seemed to only be when wiped.im around week 8 now .Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i spotted for like a week at 6 weeks... and after some extra sonos - everythign was ok!!

i believe as long as it is not a lot of RED blood accompanied with cramping... its ok - but you will def feel better when you confirm that with the drs tomorrow...

good luck

I had some spotting around 8 wks. I think. It was very light and I had no cramps, but it was still scary. The doctor had me come in for an ultrasound, and everything was fine. After a couple days, it went away.

I hope everything is okay!

Sending you lots of Chat Icon

I've read that it is very common to spot in the beinning. I spotted at 18 weeks for about 4 days. I know how scared you are right now. Just try to stay calm. It could be many things.

It's so hard not to be stressed and anxious in the beginning (I know, b/c I am the same way). But it's true when they say in the beginning, each day can make a huge difference in terms of being able to see something - fetal pole, heartbeat, etc. We saw the heartbeat at 5w6d and the doc said if we were there a day or 2 before, we would not have seen it.

Hopefully, the beta numbers will provide some comfort.

This happened to me very early in the pregnancy before a sono would detect a HB. The doc had me go for bloodwork and everything came back just fine. I am sure everything is okay but i completely understand what you are going thru - i couldnt even go to work until i got the results of the bloodwork. My numbers came back fine and a week and a half ago we saw a very strong HB at the 8 week mark.

I just had some more spotting on friday night, not a lot though, and one other time before the 8 week sono I had a little spotting when i first woke up. As the other girls said - i think that it is fairly common. Since I started telling others that I was pregnant and discussing the spotting issues, I found out that a few other friends went thru the same thing.

FM me if you just want to talk about it. It is very scary but I am sure everything is okay!
