ok... I'm really not trying to brag Chat Icon I'm honestly just curious about DSs sleeping.

DS turned 3 in November, so he is 3 years, 4 monts old. I'm a SAHM. He goes to bed around 8:45/9 at night and will sleep until 8/8:30 AM. So that's about 11 hours of sleep at night. Also, every afternoon, I put him in for a nap/rest. he actually does fall asleep most days-- for at least 1.5- 2 hours.

my mom keeps saying " I can't believe hes still taking a nap!", and I hear my friends, etc saying their kids are done naps, too.
don't get me wrong-I'm LOVING it!!! especially being a SAHM....but I'm just curious if its TOO much sleep, or if something could be wrong. when he's awake, he's alert, active, etc... so I don't know.
so are we just lucky that hes a good sleeper?? what do your kids around this age do?

I think this is pretty normal. Most kids until the age of 5 still need 12-13 hours during the day. And if he is an active kid and a good sleeper, I don't see why that wouldn't be normal for him.

DD is 3.5 and sleeps about 10-11 hours overnight and takes a 2-3 hour nap every day. And, gotta add... still doesn't realize she could leave her room when she wants to and waits for one of us to get her Chat Icon

My DD didn't give up naps until she was 3.5yo. She was in bed, asleep, by 8 every night and she would sleep straight through until 8:30-9am. She would take a 2-3 hr nap every afternoon from around 12:30-3:30.

Some kids are just good sleepers, my DD loves her sleep......even at age 5! Chat Icon

Up until about 4 months ago my DD never got out of bed herself either. Now she will but ONLY to get up in the morning. At night she would never think to, she's asleep five minutes after we put her to bed.

I don't know! She's a brilliant child, I swear! But the thought has never crossed her mind.. "I'm up, ready for the day, let me go see what's going on in the house". waits there patiently, reading her books, playing with her stuffed animals. It's kind of my parenting claim to fame.. wondering how long it will last!

thanks! it doesn't seem to be.... he doesn't usually fight me or argue when I tell him its time to go to bed at night. I don't know how long it takes him to fall asleep, though... I'm gonna start using the monitor again to keep an eye on how long its taking him to fall asleep.

I think as a general rule, most kids don't get enough sleep. Some also just need more sleep than others, same as with adults,.

My son is almost two, but he's a serious sleeper. 12.5-13 hours at night and a 2-3 hour nap. He's a mess with any less.

Theres nothing wrong with it. Don't force him to miss the sleep he needs, that'll come soon enough with school.

It totally depends on the child.
Just like some adults need more sleep (me!!!) and others can function perfectly on less than 8 hours a night.

My DD (3) only takes naps at daycare. And when she does, you can bet your bottom dollar she will be up until 10 pm or even later! Chat Icon
The next morning you would think she'd sleep late...but NOPE up around 630- 7 am without fail.
This child NEVER sleeps in.
I feel like she just requires less sleep.

It really depends on the child. DS is 2 next month and always sleeps for 12 -14 hours and will nap for 2 hours everyday. DD is 9 months and has never napped more than 10 minutes at a time exceot after swimming LOL. But she has always slept for 12 hours everynight.

This is both my sons. They are really good sleepers and for hte most part always have been. But I had to pull naps for both of them prior to 3yo because if they napped they would be awake until 10. DS1 would make us a part of his inability to sleep by calling us every 5 minutes to talk. DS2 will stay in his crib talking, playing, singing, for 2 hours some nights if he took a nap that day.

Sounds about right. AJ took naps consistently through 4. No naps really started in Kinder and she will still nap if she can squeeze on in.

Really until 4 or so she never left her room (why would you leave a toyland?)

However she never went to bed that early (thank god) and I never wanted her to, nor tried to make her go to bed early. She started going to bed at 830-900 when she started kindergarten

ENJOY it. If they are still sleeping at night then its great. My DS gave up napping just before his 2nd birthday. He sleeps about 11-12 hours at night now. He just turned 4. If he naps he is up all night and does not fall asleep till about midnight. Now he goes down between 7-8 and usually sleeps between 7-8 everyday.

Re: is something "wrong", or are we just lucky??

my dd is 3 1/2 also. She gave up her naps around 2 1/2 years old. Chat Icon but shes in bed by 7pm and sleeps till 7am. If we are out she will fall asleep in the car for a half hour or so but its very rare if we get a nap out of her at home anymore.
Its fine with me though since she goes to bed nice and early I still get my needed "me" time before I lay down for the night lol.

My son is also 3 yrs 4 mos and he sleeps at night from about 8pm to 7:30am. The only day he naps is Monday when he sleeps from 2pm to 4:15pm.

The reason why only Monday is because his sisters aren't out of school until 4:30 that day; the other days we leave here around 2:30 to get them and he's just not ready to go down at 1pm, so I gave up the battle. Otherwise, if not for the girls, he'd be napping a lot more frequently.

His middle sister was the same way and then I phased her naps out by 3.5 because that's when he was born.

The oldest one was the worst napper, but would you believe I forced her into bed each weekday afternoon for "quiet reading time" until she turned 5...and that's when #3 was born.

Re: is something "wrong", or are we just lucky??

My older DS napped until the day he started kindergarten and still slept another 10-11 hours at night. My younger DS dropped naps around 2.5 and also sleeps about 10-11 at night.
They are now 7.5 and 4 and sleep between 9-11 hours.

Nope my youngest is about to be 4 and still naps a good hour and a half every day. We changed his crib to a bed and we went from 2 to 1.5 but he started going to bed at 7:30 and gets up at 7:30/8:00
