Is my child normal
DD is 10 months old. Sometimes when you change her she gets fussy or wants to get up. I usually distract her with a toy, lotion bottle etc and it works like a charm. Well apparently a person in my family changed her and she had a fit.... crying screaming etc. The person said to me" it was as if she had been traumatized in some way and is afraid of having her diaper changed now...He said maybe she had been hurt because he has never seen it before in his children . He said they had to hold her down with such force they were afraid to hurt her. I know my daughter and it was probably because she would rather be crawling around and does not want to be tied down. Not to mention she is teething and is a little cranky anyway, Needless to say I was very upset by his accusations. He also made it a point to say she has a temper. What he said made me cry. Maybe I am too sensitive. She is a very happy girl and normally very well behaved . I think she is a normal child. She is testing her boundries as she is just learning there are some. She found she can move around now and wants to move when she wants to move. Anyone else have child who does not care to be changed at times ?

Re: Is my child normal
OMG! Your child is SO NORMAL!!!!!!!!!!
Megan started this around 8 months and I have to tell you, diaper changes have only gotten harder! They are mobile now, they dont want to be held down. They dont want to sit still for a few seconds. Megan rolls away, tries to scoot backwards, sometimes even screams. That is a CHILD! I would be very upset with this person to be honest. Dont make them second guess your child. That is just ridiculous!!!!!!

Re: Is my child normal
This behavior is COMPLETELY normal!!!!!
I am not sure who this 'person' is that was telling you this stuff - but does this person change your DD on a regular basis? If not - that could have been why she was not a happy camper. I went through this with my DD months ago (probably about the same age) and I am going through it again now with her.

Re: Is my child normal
Your child is totally normal. I remember when Jake started crawling and to change his diaper was a nightmare - he would try to get away, kick scream. I tried everything to get him to sit there. I started giving him little snacks while I did it and that finally worked - al least for a while. It is a totally normal phase.
And to whoever said that you traumatized your child in some way while changing your child's diaper is a complete a$$!!!!!!!!!

Re: Is my child normal
Then my child would be considered abnormal too! It's like wrestling an alligator while changing her. And sometimes when we're out in a public place she screams hysterically when I change her. Again, I think it's totally normal. I don't think most kids lay there complacent at this age.

Re: Is my child normal
That is completely normal!! My son will be 11mths old and will not sit still at all. Sometimes I have to put the pamper on him and clean him while he is standing up - NOT FUN or EASY
Maybe your DC was crying because she was frightened because they had to "hold her down with force and try not to hurt her" Who does that? That is not normal! Next time you tell him you successfully change a wigglie 10mth old with no problems!

Thanks everyone. I feel better. If it comes up again I'll show him these posts so he can see for himself others have the same problem.

Re: Is my child normal
My DD hates having her diaper changed. When I grab a diaper she starts running away from me.LOL I've become a pro at changing her while trying to hold her down. I try to give her a toy, but she usually throws them. I'm hoping this stage will end soon

That person should mind their own. You just described my 10 month old DD exactly! I wouldn't worry about it at all.

Re: Is my child normal
Totally normal...I have to distract my 19mth old all the time and have done so for months.
They dont like to be restrained in any way and how exciting is it for them lying there while we are swiping at their little buts with cold wipes!!
My guess is this person does not have any kids and is totally clueless. The next time he is over and your DC has a stinker diaper ask him to please change it and show you how it should be done

Totally normal. Jordana at 17 months is the EXACT same way- and has been since she was a newborn. Some kids just don't like it.

my 6 month old goes crazy lately when I try to change her, she tries to climb over the side of the changing table, screams, twists, and has recently learned to undo the diaper tab...drives me crazy, but I feel its absolutely normal

Re: Is my child normal
OMG! WHAT AN A$$!!!!! I can't believe he would say that- is he an expert in developmental stages? I would assume not since it is extremely normal for babies this age to HATE getting a diaper change. My daughter just learned to crawl and changing her is a nightmare. You would think I was murdering her by listening to her scream about being forced to lie down for a second or two while I change her.
I am so angry for you right now I can't see straight!

Re: Is my child normal
DS doesn't usually scream his head off, but sometimes he cries when you change his diaper. It all depends on his mood. But give him a toy or any object in his hands and he's fine.
But it's totally normal what your DD does. God i've seen so many kids throwing fits when having their diaper changed. When I change DS's diaper on the bed where DH is watching TV then that is what I call a wrestling match. He doesn't scream but he twists and turns cuz he has to go climb on top of daddy...
Why can't people just mind their own business???

Re: Is my child normal
OK, I just have to say that diaper changing time with DS is like a wrestling match. We both end up with red marks and scratches because he's a real squirmy wormy.
