something that can be abbreviated AJ, PJ, JP, etc that that is what they'll be called?

I am keeping my deceased brother's name as a middle name if we have a boy, and every name we like can be abbreviated with it, but I HATE those abbreviations.

I compromised with DH about the first name but asked him to PLEASE not call him that, even though he thinks its okay....I know its just personal preference....and regardless of what his friend's say, I will call him by his first name

What do you think...will it happen regardless and I better just get over it now?

Re: Is it inevitable (baby name question) that if you name your baby

I think people will follow your lead. My cousin's name is James - he's never been Jim or Jimmy and no one really ever tries to call him that. With regard to middle names/initials - people won't really know what his middle name is unless you choose to tell them, so I think there's even less chance of an unwanted abbreviation, KWIM?

DS is Aiden James and no one has called him AJ......he is only 6 months, I guess as he gets older friends in school might use a nickname, but who knows!

No, my brother's name is Thomas James and we all were calling him TJ when he was a baby because we thought it was cute, but after a while, his personality developed and he was definitely a "Tom!" Not one person has called him TJ in over 13 years (he's 14 now).

FYI my dad's name is James Thomas and no one has ever called him JT.

Like others have said, I don't think people will call your DC a name with initals unless you initate it.

For us, we are using his initials, JJ

We have two names if we have a boy Thomas or Christian middle name will be after my DH-Jason. I wanted it that way so when he gets older if he chooses he can be called TJ or CJ.

My uncle's name is Vincent. He goes by Jimmie... Chat Icon

People will use whatever name you, and later, DS uses. Some people refuse to answer to any nickname, others prefer it. Most people are OK with using the person's preferred name.

Also, middle names aren't commonly used in the US, so if DS or you never mention it, people won't ask about it, or use it.

My BIL is named after their father, George Frederick but the family calls him Jeff (GF). Other people know him as George though.

I've never heard of anyone assuming to call someone by their initials but I may call DH "TJ" tonight just to be annoying!! Chat Icon

Re: Is it inevitable (baby name question) that if you name your baby

I agree too that only if you stipulate and start calling him AJ/PJ, whatever, the initial thing will not be picked up.

My nephew was AJ because that's what my sister wanted and that's what he was called from birth. My initials are DJ and I was never a DJ even when I tried to make it stick as a teenager... it just did not.

Whatever you call baby and introduce him as... that's what people will call him. And in the beginning, if you have to correct some people, so be it.

Your family and friends will definitely follow your lead. Its when they get older and they have friends of their own that it may not be avoided.

DH is Thomas. His family call him Tom or Thomas. never Tommy. But he has friends who call him Tommy (gawd i hate it!) lmaoo.

Re: Is it inevitable (baby name question) that if you name your baby

DS is Harrison. He's only 6 months old, but that's what we and everyone else call him. When we originally put this name on our list, we thought about how it could be shortened to Harry. Once he was born, we decided we preferred calling him by his full name. People may start calling him Harry when he gets older, but I think I'll always call him Harrison. It seems to suit him better than Harry.

Re: Is it inevitable (baby name question) that if you name your baby

Yep..same thing the previous poster said..

my brother is James and my mother never wanted anyone to call him Jimmy. Y?? i dont know. But he's always been james.

Our friends son is John Ryan, and no one calls him JR b/c his parents dont.
So i think if you set the precedent people will follow.

My dh is James (and so is FIL and dh's brothers son). DH and FIL swear their name is Jimmy, no one ever calls them James-his dad even changed his name on his SS card...I think SIL's family call our nephew James, but dh's family calls him Jimmy...I just don't get it and felt such a relief when they told me I was having a girl otherwise I would have had to have the same name(James on paper but call him Jimmy)! Anyway, I think it is what ever you call him. In my situation i think I would prefer JJ, just not to call him the same as everyone else.

My son's initials are JC. No one calls him that. Frankly it would royally p--- me off if someone did. That is not his name and never will be. He can shorten his name from his formal name but no, he will not be known as JC and no one in our family or group of friends would do that to him/us.

Re: Is it inevitable (baby name question) that if you name your baby

no.

my son's initials could be a "name" but i will not let anyone call him that. it's not his name. when he's older, if HE chooses to be called that, then it's fine.

My son's initials are A.J. and no one has dared to call him that. He has been given a FULL name and that's what he will go by.

Unless you want him called that, it shouldn't be an issue and if someone does address him by his initials, remind them nicely what his full given name is - in case they forgot Chat Icon
