Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

Hmmmmm....depends on what the $700 means to you and how important it is to you. I had a private room at NSUH both times. Can't remember how much it cost - it was high 500's I think per night. It was worth every penny to me...now 700...its a bit more but, for two nights, i would prob. pay it. My friends that didn't go for the private room had awful experiences. My experience was amazing both times! If there is a 3rd for me I would 100% pay the $700 but, its a very personal decision.

I would pay that... I specifically set aside FSA funds for the private room cost. I really don't want to a roommate with random visitors coming in and out. And I want DH there with me. This is our first.

I got a private room, but was in Winthrop so it was like 2something a night. I had a c/c plus was in the hospital for 4 days prior to the c/s so i really needed SLEEP by the time my DD was born we we did the private room.

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

It is all relative, $700 to some is what $200 is to others, kwim?

For me it would not be worth it. But if I had tons of money I probably would not think twice.

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

I paid 250 a night for a private room and it was worth EVERY penny. . . but I was not able to do anything on my own bc of the labor and c-section and if DH had not been able to stay with me I would have lost it. . needed help getting out of bed, needed him to hand me DS everytime I needed to feed which was pretty much every hour on the hour!! No one else needed to see the hobbling, travesty that was me trying to get to and go to the bathroom the first night! :(
Also, the shared rooms were kind of awful. .

I probably would have even paid 700 a night in that circumstance but DEF not if I was at all mobile and/or independent. 700 seems REALLY like a lot. . esp if it's not that long. . and you might not get a roomie anyway. .

Mr dr told me that all rooms in Winthrop will be private...

Someone correct me if I am wrong.. But I think this is the plan for the future.. They are not all private now but they want them to eventually be.

Roomates aren't that bad that you should have to pay $700. I'm sure you can think of 298477493 more ways to spend that $

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

Look, I am totally a spoiled brat when it comes to the private room--my DH didn't stay with me, I just didn't want to share. With DD#1 I paid around $300/night for 4 nights; with DD#2 the price was jacked up to around $550/night and I coerced DH to pay for it, but the compromise was that I only got to stay 3 nights. Chat Icon

This last time, in October, I heard the price was $700/night. DH said absolutley NO WAY. So I sucked it up and joined a room with the riff-raff. Chat Icon It was FINE. I didn't even have a roommate the first night; then the 2nd and 3rd nights were wonderful. My only issue was that one evening she had her prayer group there saying prayers (which I actually liked), and they thought anyone in the room could use OUR bathroom. THAT I didn't like--only the mommies are allowed to use that. Otherwise, seriously, awesome.

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

I had one at Mt Sinai NYC after my C/S. I was thrilled about it (DH did this when he went to sign my admission stuff).
4 nights so it was almost $3k Chat Icon Yes, holy moly it was $$$$. At the same time, this was our first and last baby; a c-sec is a little rough, we wanted to bond and have a few visitors without disturbing anyone else... I'm glad we did it and would do it again; I'm pretty frugal by nature - while I WISH it had been less money, and WOULD have been less outside of NYC I'm sure, I can't say I regret it AT ALL. I titled that the BEST PUSH PRESENT EVER in my birth story Chat Icon

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

I experienced both while at the hospital. I was in a room with another lady- who breast fed and had the baby come in every 3 hours or so. Yes it woke me up (my baby was in NICU) but it really wasn't terrible. I didn't mind at all.

The second night- a private room opened up and they asked me if I wanted to stay there- it was great not going to lie- lots of room BUT not worth paying for IMO. I'd rather take the money and buy Chat Icon something

This is EXACTLY why IMO it IS worth it to pay for the private room -

No offense to anyone, but I (and my DH) would NOT be comfortable w/ having to share a room w/ someone else's husband right after I give birth -
I had Sean @ NShore Manhasset and the private room was $700 and worth every single penny IMO - and I will do it again w/ this one -

You are tired, you are sore, you are uncomfortable, hormonal, in pain etc etc etc - maybe if you're ONLY dealing w/ another woman who is going through the same thing it's not an issue - but you're not - you're dealing w/ her, her family, her kids, her husband, he decision to BF and keep the baby in the room 24/7 (while I was FF and Sean went to the nursery @ night -) DH didn't stay @ the hospital w/ me .........and I would NOT at all be comfortable having to share a room w/ another woman's husband sleeping there as well ..........

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

I was a c section with #1 and will be again for #2.

Delivered at Winthrop and was in a private room for 3 out of the 5 days I was in the hospital.

Without a doubt, I am requesting a private room the minute I walk through the door. 700 is a lot, but I don't spend a lot of money on myself....so I could definitely justify the expense to myself.

My son was born and went to the NICU. I was throwing up non stop from the anethesia and hysterical crying over not knowing what was happening with him. My roommate and her husband come into the room in the middle of all of this and proceed to argue with the nurse about allowing the husband to sleep over. So he ignores the nurse when she tells him to leave and he spends the whole night complaining about the tv, the air conditioning, sharing a bathroom. Then the new mom argued with the nurse over why her baby wasn't latching. I couldn't get out of bed to go downstairs to the NICU to see my son, but one of the fabulous nurses there gave me a number to call and told me to call every couple of hours all night long to check on him.

Which I did. Which ****** this couple off to no end.

It was a lose/lose for everyone. The first shot at a private room I had...I took it. Best decision I ever made.

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

Yes! I paid that at Mt. Sinai in NYC when I delivered my first son. Because I developed preeclampsia, I had to stay in a special recovery room that had people in and out of it and was monitored the whole night for the first night. It was awful but I had no choice. Suffice to say, I didn't sleep and because I went into labor the previous night, I had barely slept in 2 days. The second night I got a private room and it was so worth it!!! I am delivering at a different hospital this time but I am getting a private room again.

Hell no!!! $700 a night for a hospital room is absurd. I wouldn't pay that for a hotel room!

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

I had to think about it when I heard my hospital was $250/night and ultimately I'm choosing to have a roomie! For $700 it wouldn't even be a thought, I would rather put that $700/night aside for a future vacation or something. Think about the total amount especially if you would be in for more than the normal 2 nights...that could be enough saved for a very night vacation Chat Icon

I'm hoping to do this too - I wasn't 100% sure that it would be covered so I have to look into it, but I definitely have FSA money set aside.

and this thread just totally convinced me to do the private room, so thanks.

Re: Is a private room worth $700/night?

$700 is ridiculous amount of money to be paying for a private room. As all the ladies say here, the average is $250 which is more reasonable...

I was at Winthrop and they try giving you a private room if available, its not a guarantee. If they run out of rooms and you hadn't requested a private room, you will get a roommate. I did not get a private room and was super lucky bc I had the room all to myself my whole stay!!
