Introduction and advice
Hi everyone-- I have been lurking for a little while--- I just moved into my first house about 6 months ago after getting married in August. I love looking at all of your remodeling pics as I have done a lot of remodeling too.
Now I come to you for advice. My neighbors have begun a car detailing business in their driveway. They use really loud machines (louder than a lawnmower) to do this work. While they are working they generally play loud music as well. I called the town and they said I could send a letter to the zoning board or come in to the town hall to file a complaint. The problem is I am having a family bbq this weekend in my backyard and will be unable to go to town hall til next week. I am really annoyed and am concerned that my neighbors are going to ruin this bbq that I am having to show some of my familiy members my new house. SUggestions anyone?

Re: Introduction and advice
My only advice if you don't have the time to go to town hall - with your husband by your side, meet your neighbors and explain that you're having a family gathering this weekend and were hoping that they could keep the music and noise to a minimum for everyone to enjoy themselves.
One - if they don't oblige - it's one more thing to share with the town when you lodge a complaint that you've tried asking peacefully.
Two - It warns your neighbors that the noise is bothersome and may put them on edge.

And if your gutsy, tell the neighbors what they're doing is illegal and that you'll be lodging a complaint to the town if they don't lower the noise.

Re: Introduction and advice
I thought of that, but then im afraid if i say something to them- and then end up going to town hall- the relationship is going to get real bad real fast-- i dont want to end up with slashed tires...

Re: Introduction and advice
I would definitely suggest walking over there and asking them to keep it down for the day. If they oblige, hold off on town hall for awhile. Then complain annonymously. They will never suspect it was you- becaus eyou were nice enough to talk to their face.

I would definately go over there & ask them nicely if they can keep it down on the day of your BBQ. Chances are, maybe they don't realize they are being so obnoxious.
If they don't comply, then file a complaint next week

I agree. And in fact, I think that going to the town FIRST would be making the situation worse because it would be escalating the problem.
You want to be able to say that you spoke with them on such and such date and they complied (or didn't), etc.
If they are reasonable human beings they will keep it down for your BBQ - if not, then you know what you are dealing with.
HTH!
