Introducing Oatmeal
I think DD is ready for something more solid in her diet as she has been STTN since she was 6-7 weeks old and now all of sudden for the last two weeks, she has been screaming bloody murder nearly 2 hours after her last feed, isn't napping and wakes a few times in the middle of night, but will fall back asleep after I give her back a pacifier.
So, how do I introduce oatmeal? I'm thinking she needs it around lunch time and dinner when she is the most cranky.
What type of oatmeal should I give her at first?
I'm new to all of this, so any advice from BTDT mom's would be greatly appreciated.
DD is 4.5 months old.

Re: Introducing Oatmeal
DD was 5 months when she first started oatmeal and rice cereal. BJ's I know sells a two pack of Gerbers Rice and Oatmeal. That is what I use. I put in some oatmeal and mixed it with formula (or breastmilk). If you feel the consistency is hard for your DD at first, milk it down a little more. DD's first time she had cereal, it was VERY watered down, almost like soup, but increasingly I thickened it up.

Re: Introducing Oatmeal
Thank you!
So, basically take a TBSP and measure out a 2-3 TBSP of oatmeal and then add formula/BM until it's soupy and then serve to her?

Re: Introducing Oatmeal
yea! The box tells you how much to add, but I found it to be a little annoying. So I started to use as much or as little formula as I needed!

Re: Introducing Oatmeal
We just started oatmeal as well. I give her cereal two hours before her last bottle. She started with 1 tablespoon oatmeal with 2-3 tbsp of breastmilk. We use earths best oatmeal. It took her a few days to really get the hang of taking the food off the spoon. Hth!

Re: Introducing Oatmeal
Our ped had us start w rice then barley and then oatmeal cereals. Did you start rice yet? Our instructions were to give cereal for breakfast and lunch and then at 6 months to add dinner. We did 1 week for each new cereal before going to the next one.
The 1st time or so it should be soupy and then you can adjust the consistency as needed.

We see our Ped on Monday, but DD is just so hungry, we know we need to start.
I wasn't going to introduce rice to her diet as she has trouble enough going #2, I'm not going to add to the issue by giving rice.
Her grouchy moments are at lunch time and dinner in between those bottle feeds.

Re: Introducing Oatmeal
If your DD has #2 issues then definitely start with oatmeal. Rice is binding. With Oatmeal, I start with a Tablespoon at first then add 2-3 Tablespoons of formula (or BM). It should be an applesauce consistency. DD liked it runnier, DS likes it thicker, so play with the consistencies until you find one you like. If she can't grasp the concept of the spoon, try giving it off your finger. Start with one feeding a day. I give it at the 2nd feeding of the day and the dinner time one. Good luck!
