We are going to offer cereal to our 4month DS this weekend. Not sure if I should offer via bottle or with a spoon. Curious how other mommies started their kids on solids.

I am also beginning this weekend. I think every pediatrician recommends it different. I was told to give a tablespoon of cereal in the morning and one in the evening for one week and then barley the next and then rice...then I can interchange them and eventually add veggies and fruit.

Spoon. IMHO, you're not really offering solids if you're sticking it in the bottle, because your child already knows how to suck, you want them to learn how to eat.

Not true. Peds now recommend that cereal and other "first foods" be introduced on a spoon as practice. A baby's main source of nutrition is either formula or breast milk.

Looks like things were done a lot differently back then and I guess my girlfriend hasn't caught up with these times yet!!

We were at our pediatrician for DS's eczema at our last appointment and discussed solids for literally only 20 seconds. she told me to add a tablespoon to breastmilk. i THOUGHT she meant to a bottle of breastmilk but we didn't really discuss it.

Did your pediatrician mention how much milk to cereal?

I was going to just make it very watery and offer it with a spoon.

Re: Introducing solids - did you offer a spoon of cereal/oatmeal or put the cereal/oatmeal in a bottle?

we didn't do it in the bottle or by spoon. We skipped baby food. I waited until they could pick up small chunks of fruit and soft table foods and put it in their own mouth(at 7 months old). Then I gave them a spoon and let them learn how to do it on their own.

How much breastmilk/formula you add determines the consistency. I have never done this before, so when I give it a shot this weekend, I will probably not make it too thick.

Re: Introducing solids - did you offer a spoon of cereal/oatmeal or put the cereal/oatmeal in a bottle?

Our ped had us do it on a 1:2 ratio. 1 Tbsp. of cereal to 2 Tbsp. of BM. They also said to increase in this manner (2Tbsp. of cereal to 4 Tbsp. of BM). Eventually you can eyeball it and know how much of each to mix it to the right consistency.

Spoon. The ratio our doc told us was not working. I made it thicker and it worked much better.

Spoon
The only time that cereal should be in a bottle is if the doctor tells you to do it early for reflux.

Cereal in a bottle can be a choking hazard.
