Infertility discussed on Oprah

I don't know if anyone has seen this episode before, but I am just catching the end of it. It's an hour dedicated to infertility. I plan to DVR it when it's on again tonight at 7 pm. Just an FYI!

Re: Infertility discussed on Oprah

I can't believe I forgot to post about it!! So sorry girls. I dvr'd it. Thank goodness for dvr.

The first half was suppose to be about surrogates in India that American women are hiring to carry their babies b/c it's cheaper than using an American surrogate.

The 2nd part is about Martha Stewarts daughter who is spending about $28,000 a month on fertility treatments!!!!

I saw this the first time it was aired. The first story was very moving, and I thought well told.

Re: Infertility discussed on Oprah

I think I saw this the 1st time but I'm going to watch again with DH. Did anyone see the episode the other day about women in their 30's? There was a 30 year old on who has been dealing with IF and I could feel her pain. DH kept looking at me like he could understand how I must feel. I think it might have been an old episode...we DVR Oprah everyday.

Re: Infertility discussed on Oprah

I saw that one. I remember my mother offering DH and I money for treatments (if we needed them) not realizing how much they cost until she saw this as well.

As pompous as Martha's daughter may come across, I think after trying so many times, things just became very matter of fact and odds are she was tired of telling her story over and over. I also felt she knew how blessed she was that she had the money for her treatments and was humbled by the fact that no matter how much you have that not even money can make it all happen. At least that was my interpretation.

I saw this the first time it aired then caught it before again. I can't believe she has an RE that continually allows her to stim cycle after cycle, with such poor results.

I thought she said she did 3 cycles, putting back between 4-6 embryos at a time, and had one cycle where she didn't have any viable eggs.

Yeah she said something like that. I also don't understand what she is spending $28K a month on - a fresh IVF cycle costs about half that, right?

I found this for you about Alexis Stewart...something interesting to read...

"I'm single now, but having my own kid is the most important thing in my life, so I am trying everything I can: fancy doctors, expensive drugs, high-tech procedures," she said. "Most people can't afford what I am doing, I am really lucky; I know that."

Alexis, who said she was opting for an anonymous sperm donor, told the magazine the first place she went for treatment cost about $10,000 a month.

"When I didn't respond to the drugs after three months, they basically said, 'Don't bother,' and kept asking, 'Why don't you use a donor egg?' Finally, I said, 'You're fired.' "

Since December, Alexis, now like her mom a Sirius Satellite Radio talk-show host, has been going to the New York Fertility Institute in Manhattan, where drugs cost $6,000 - and the doctors and in vitro fertilization procedures about $20,000 to $27,000 a month.

"They give me, like, eight times as many drugs than the other place did to stimulate egg production, then check me every two to four days," she said.

She said once a month she'll inject herself with a drug that causes her to ovulate in 36 hours.

"Just before the 36 hours are up, I go to the doctor's office and they put me under anesthesia and use an 18-inch needle to remove about 10 eggs," she said. "Then, I go home to my apartment in TriBeCa, change and get ready for my Sirius Radio show, 'Whatever.' "

The doctor, meanwhile, fertilizes the eggs, using a technique called intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection, which involves poking a hole in each egg and shoving a sperm in to create an embryo, she said.

"I'm using an anonymous donor, but not from a genius bank," she said. "Those are creepy."

After testing the embryos for Down syndrome and other anomalies, the doctor will try to transfer the healthy ones, she said.

"I've had two transfers," she said. "They haven't stuck . . . If there are no healthies, I try to let it go immediately, because you can go crazy. Crazy."

"I'm trying to build up a supply of healthy embryos because, ideally, I'd love to have two kids," she said.

Alexis divorced attorney John Cuti in 2004, explaining they were "completely ambivalent about kids."

"Now, I no longer have the luxury of having doubts," she said. "A child is your legacy. What better thing can you do in life than put a really good person in the world who's going to make it a better place?

"And my mom's just desperate. She has wanted grandchildren forever. Forever! She's always like, 'For my birthday, I would like you to be pregnant.' And I'm like, 'Me, too!' "

that's pretty scary to be on 8 times the drugs!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

And it can't be good for her either. Wow, seems some doctors will do anything for money, huh?

I watched yesterday and I really thought the first part was very interesting and done very well.

As for Alexis Stewart, I wasn't thrilled with her but you really made me see what she is probably thinking. Thank you for that. It really makes a difference to look at it like this.

Her cycles are so expensive b/c she is doing everything possible. Not just IVF with the most drugs possible, she also spoke about PGD (is that what it's called??) where they take one chromosone from each embryo to test them to make sure there are no abnormalities. That adds up fast!!!

I just have to say, regarding the first part, I had no idea that surrogates cost $80,000 - $90,000!! That's crazy!!

I know this show was done a while ago. Anyone have any recent news on Alexis? Does anyone listen to her show? Is she still cycling? I know of people who have done 10 cycles or more! I think if the patient has the money, even if he dr. suggests that they stop, they just can't. I think we've all struggled with how much is enough.

Re: Infertility discussed on Oprah

I am wondering why she chose this clinic and not Cirnell or something. I've not heard much about them. And hey Alexis--everyone gets monitored every 2-4 days not just rich people. Even a shlep like me who paid 12k out of pocketChat Icon

Wonder what happened after Oct 07. I googled her and no where does it say anything about her treatments beyond that date. Her expenses are probably higher too b/c she is using donor sperm. No idea cost on that.
