So you guys are mad that Imus was dropped. I think I am ****** that as a college educated mother of three smart beautiful children - I had to explain to my children all week why it is so wrong to call someone a NAPPY-HEADED HO! Believe me the Ho part is not as bad as the nappy-headed part. As an african- american, words like nappy-headed are derogatory as it is insulting to my being black. My dark skin, my full lips, my big hips and my thick hair. We are sick and tired of being looked at as being less than, because of our black features. And ladies let anyone call your college-educated athletic daughter a HO and see how angry you get!

I agree that it was wrong, and I can more than appreciate how difficult the conversation that followed between you & your DDs must have been, but can you honestly say that you & your children listened to the comment as Imus was saying it? My guess is no. So who is to blame for it coming into your house, Imus for saying it to an audience of maybe tens of thousands, or the news who felt the need to propagate the hate to millions for 3 days straight. The media sensationalizes EVERYTHING. So they will profit off of the news of his comments, and they are getting ratings from it, while he gets fired.

I agree, it is a horrible thing to have said, and he apologized and will again apologize. But the news is STILL repeating his soundbyte over & over.

And I think there are many prejudices that we have to face. I am also college-educated, and I have been called way worse than "ho." Sorry to be cynical, but it is a fact of life. Chat Icon

Once again it is the "NAPPY HEADED" part of Nappy Headed Hos that is offensive because it is a racial slur.
And I know my kids may be called offensive things, but maybe in 2007 I dont want them to be insulted on a racial level. They should not be made to feel "less than" by anyone, because this is not 1807, and they should be seen as EQUAL to anyone else's kids. And by the way, I don't think your predjudices are the same as mine, as I wear mine on the outside everyday.

Predjudice is predjudice. To tell someone else that their predjudices arent the same, isnt right. No one can determine what one has to deal with in life.

give me a rap song that targets a specific group of people. i listen to rap music and i can honestly say that i have never been offended by a song.

Hello Alnem! As a fellow listener of rap, I wouldn't say that I was offended but the song "Cave B!tch" by Ice Cube comes to mind as a song that targets a specific group of people. (I also love these boards because of the diversity.)Chat Icon

I completely understand what you were saying, and I knew what part of what Imus said was offensive to you.

And I am sorry but if you think that white- or caucasian-appearing folks do not face daily predjudices because of our appearance then you are sorely mistaken. How about try being of mixed race. Now try it looking white. It is not fun when people "think" it is ok to tell racist jokes in front of you b/c it won't "hurt." And one prejudice is NOT worse than another - they are all wrong. And by the way, just because we are both women (I am assuming from your posts, forgive me if I am wrong) we indeed do wear the same badges externally.

And you are right, in 2007 we should be above all this. But the reality is that we are not. It is out there, and festering. It is in the media as well as in everyday life. And as a woman, and a soon to be mother I pray that my child will never be hurt by a thoughtless or even a directed comment of this nature, but that is not reality. I'd rather prepare them for it & teach them how to handle themselves with class, and to feel good about themselves despite what ignorant people have to say - the same way my mother did for me.

Re: Imus dropped!

I don't like Imus at all.

But how come its okay for white people to sing the words Imus said, as long as we paid for the cd or we paid for the concert ticket?

Peace, Love, and Nappiness? saw them back in '97...sang along

and lets face it, can you name a rap song that doesn't mention Hoe?

I believe that if the words are hurtful and offensive, then ALL sides should drop them.

This is really challenging our First Amendment rights...while what Imus said was wrong, it was not against FCC regulations...this is a slippery slope

Steve Harvey has a nationally syndicated radio show and just a few weeks ago was making fun of white people speaking in a redneck twang and saying things like white trash and trailer trash...offensive? Yes but in no way should he be fired so why Imus?

This is the double standard right here.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Imus was trying to be funny. How many black comedians can go on and on making fun of white people and you don't see "civil rights activist" Al Sharpton calling for the end of their careers? It's ok for black DJs to make fun of white people all the time and no one talks about banning them for that reason.

And I agree that the biggest problem at stake here is First Ammendment rights.

Re: Imus dropped!

here's how i see it and i might have said this in earlier posts

i agree with everyone - we've seen far worse in rap songs on CD's, on TV shows, and many other public media.

And you have to wonder why Stern stayed on free radio all those years and just got away with fines from the FCC.

1) because as someone said, he has robin - so the racist argument is out the window

2) anyone who knows the name howard stern, knows that hes offensive and that he's going to say things that offend people. Therefore, you listen at your own discretion. Those that might be offended simply don't listen.

With Imus, he never truly defined what his show was about. In the beginning, he competed with Stern, with the "shock jock" comedy stuff.

But, in recent times, he's morphed into more of a serious political commentator, which focused less on comedy and more on issues, with some high-brow political guests. So, you're not expecting him to make a comment like that.

People who listen to WFAN will remember that this is not the first time this has happened. A few years ago, his co-host, Sid Rosenberg, made a racist comment about the Williams' sisters (tennis). He was suspended for a brief time, but is back. The show was not yanked.

Imus will be fine. WFAN will likely not yank him. And if it does, he'll join Stern on satellite.

Re: Imus dropped!

Exact same phrase that Imus got slaughtered for is in Xzibit's song (feat. Snoop Dogg) "D.N.A (Drugs-N-Alkahol)"

I won't post the link-the song is VERY explicit-but you can google it on your own if you want to see.

there is a distinct difference between a radio talk show and a rap song. the radio show can only survive if the advertisers keep it on the air. if people buy the CD's of these offensive songs, there really isn't anything anyone can do. if people boycotted these a-hole rappers, they would stop!

Chat Icon Exactly.

The thing with Stern is that his sponsors know what they are getting into by supporting him.

Imus' sponsors didn't expect this. So drop him, fine. But explain the real reason - money - not because what he said was offensive b/c plenty of other radio personalities say plenty of offensive things, even more so.

When people are saying the reason behind all this is because of something offensive that was said - that's where we are jeopardizing our 1st Ammendment rights. Offensive is allowed - as evidenced by Stern. Losing sponsors will get you booted.

Thank you. The constant references to rap are pointless. A lot of it that gets mainstream attention is pretty bad but Ho is not used in every rap song (that was a gross exaggeration) and even if it was don’t support it or protest it - remember Bill Maher was successful in getting Pepsi to drop Ludacris 's ad

Its not OK to be racist against anyone- its up to you how you chose to respond.

I can’t take Imus seriously enough to care what comes out of his mouth but for those that do - what’s the problem.

Everyone has choices; choices have consequences based on how you chose to react.

I think that people misunderstand the role and limits of the FCC. They only get involved when there is a formal complaint made. They are a commitee, not a judiciary or executive body in the government. Their only function is to impose fines & track fair practices for licensing for stations & networks. They cannot set laws, because they have no due process of law.

The reason why Stern's jobs were secure (for the most part) is like Don said there were no secrets as to what he was about. Imus is in a situiation where because he does have politicians and other "serious" members of society on his show regularly, it may not be as clear as to what his content MAY be (even though he has made racially challenging remarks in the past & does have some comedic bits on his show). Any of Stern's later listeners & advertisers bought into his show specifically, and therefore knew the possible consequence. Most of the advertisers on KROCK, when Stern was on, bought into his time slot & then got others as a bonus/bundle, because it was the only way to get some of the larger advertisers to advertise through all the dayparts, not just his. Money talks......KWIM

You are so right about our First Amendment rights.....People are offended every day, by many different people. It just happens naturally through the course of sharing ideas & opposing views. Not all offensive speech is racist or can be construed as racist, but this world would be pretty bland if we could not do what we have done here on this thread, which is share opposing views & try to learn & evolve.

(OK off soapbox again).

MSNBC dropped Imus the day before his radiothon. . .I hope people still remember to donate because it is a great cause that should NOT suffer because of this controversy. Here is more information if anyone is interested:

WFAN Radiothon

Imus has been involved with great causes through the years - and I hope that is not destroyed because of one stupid remark.
