Re: if your intern wrote you this...
Tell him/her "since this is a learning experience, I'll take this as a teaching moment - if you speak / write like that in a real job you'd have a good chance of being fired or not taken seriously. If this continues, you'll be looking for a new internship" - if its a credit internship, I'd also say that you are going to include this in your review if this behavior continues.

Re: if your intern wrote you this...
I most likely would have laughed, and told them that better anticipating my needs would be more advantageous than writing little quips....but then again, I work in a really laid back environment...

Re: if your intern wrote you this...
I guess I would just assume he thought he was being cute - but I would want to discuss it with him and let him know that it was inappropriate. You are his boss and he should not speak (write) to you that way, but he may have thought your relationship was such that that would be ok.? If not and he was being smart with you, I'd let him have it!

I think this is a good way to handle it ^^
How much longer is he supposed to be there? Maybe you can set up an mid-point review and formally tell him these things, almost like a verbal warning. If you take things seriously, so should he. It's just disrespectful for him to talk to you that way. I hate slackers! What's with some of these kids these days?? I know that's an overstatement and not all interns are slackers, but he's certainly not helping the situation!
