I Wouldn't tip them. I normally dont get diner take out.
But I dont tip the guy behind the pizza counter, or the man in the chinese food store. I don't get it.
I also don't understand the tip cup at the italian ice places that say help us pay for college. Give me a break they get paid to work and part of their job requirements are to serve customers their take out orders. This whole tipping things urks me.

If you were to tip, how would you even know who to tip?...the cashier at the counter holding the food? I always assumed tipping was for good service in bringing the food to you, not for you going to pick it up...but hey, maybe I'm missing something.
a few times the hostess has taken my order and brought it to me, I did not tip her - she's probably the owners' wife or daughter. sorry - no tip. and like so many have already said, tipping in this country is OUT of control!

tipping is so out of control. i don't care how much "energy" it takes to pack an order...they don't deserve a tip when i pick it up myself!

Yes, because I was a waitress. A waitress has to pack up your order, taking her away from her tables, and may be shorted in a tip elsewhere for preparing y our food. They still have to check the order and make sure you get everything that you wanted, silverware, condiments, etc.
It is not as hard as having a table, but it is work. So I always tip a dollar or two.

I will tip anyone that works on tips. If you get paid server wages then that's when I tip. Otherwise, no.

Yeah, that's just plain old begging. Ok, fine, have a tip cup out and if your teenage-azz isn't rude and does a decent job of serving me, yeah, I'll leave a tip. I got no problem with that. But don't tell me about your problems. Tell it to your parents...or better yet, keep it to yourself! LOL!

 My first thougts too. But I won't.
We never tip for pick up orders - only wait service and delivery.

When I pick up Chinese food at a sit down restaurant (as opposed to a small store-front type of place), I dont leave a tip. A diner is no different.

I just got take-out from a Chinese/Japanese restaurant. The bill left a spot for a tip and I didn't. Often the host/hostess/owner puts together the order and none of them work on minimum wage. Host/hostesses usually get an hourly or per shift pay and then wait staff might tip them out a small percentage on what they made but since they are not surviving on tips, I don't tip. Putting together my order is part of their pay.

I never tip take out. I don't see the difference between take out at a diner, restaurant or Wendy's. I don't tip people at a fast food where I just ordered food and leave why would I do that at a diner or anywhere else. I called in, I picked up. No service at a table!!!
I would tip for delivery!

At the diner that is all put in the bag for you along with your utensils, sauces..etc..Some diners actually have the waitresses/waiters physically put the food in the "take out" containers. There is definitely more work involved. Same with Chilis..the more complicated the order the more work it is.
when I get Chili's to go there is a person who takes the orders via phone and physically gets the stuff from the back when they tell them it's ready. I'm waiting WITH the person I'm paying. What are they doing that's tip worthy? Carrying the food from one room to another?

The diner near my house automatically adds a gratuity to take out orders. It is a turn off because just bringing my food out of the kitchen does not warrant a 10 % tip.

YES!!!! and as someone who has and still does work for tips, I do. I think even if its a couple of bucks. I fight with DH about this all the time. He hates tipping and I tip way to much.

I tip about 10% of the order.....it is usually the wait staff that puts the order together and these people really count on their tips.

I feel the same way. The people that work at fast food places earn at least a regular min. wage where as they do not at diners, Fridays, etc. Part of their income is calculated and taxed on the presumtion of tips.
