Re: If you live in a "good" school district...

My ILs and some friends live in a better school district than we do (they are in a town in South-shore Nassau) and they pay around $10-11K a year.

We live in a good school district in Nassau, on a pretty decent piece of property (1/4 acre) and we pay just over $9000.

I'm in the Middle Country School district which probably isn't even a good school district. I barely have 1/4 acre...and I pay over 12,000...don't get me started!!! We are in the process of grieving them with Mark Lewis but it's taking FOREVER.

Re: If you live in a "good" school district...

ok-- well, the house we just looked at in Westchester is $24K in taxes. Chat Icon PLUS HOA fees.

We can afford the houses, but not the taxes! It's so frustrating.

We are still waiting for our counter-offer to come in on our place-- but I think we need to reassess where we will move.

Re: If you live in a "good" school district...

The area where we live now and are looking to buy in - very good school district in Nassau and the taxes on the houses we are looking at have ranged from 12,000-26,000 Chat Icon For the most part the upper end is for the more expensive houses but, even at the upper end you will find higher and lower takes in that range.

How much was the house? In our area houses around 1.5 even 1.3 do have taxes around that amount.

Re: If you live in a "good" school district...

Where we live now, which is a "good" district, we pay $7,500. Where we are looking to move, a "better" district, the houses in our price range seem to run between $11,000 and $14,000, including village taxes.

$24,000 plus HOA fees is outrageous!!!Chat Icon

it was $850, but the taxes were based on the home being valued at 1.2 which it prob was a few years ago.

I live in this area as well and used to think the same thing until I realized due to city income tax DH and I pay more bw real estate and city taxes then some towns in LI Chat Icon

So if we decide to move to LI it would probably equal out and the homes are more affordable (in the area we are looking compared to the area we live now).

I agree. For us, the extra amount we pay in city income tax due to living in Queens is RIDICULOUS. It evens out the fact that we have slightly lower property taxes (although those keep rising as well) than the suburbs.

Re: If you live in a "good" school district...

Smithtown, .75 plot, and I'm just under 15K. Most of the neighbors in my development pay 16-19K (I religiously grieve my taxes). But, McMansions that were built behind me 2-4 years ago, are paying over 25K. They do have 1.5-2 acre plots.
