DS is 2 1/2 and lately bedtime has been really tough, some nights he screams his head off for at least a half hour and sometimes it's only for 5 minutes. He wants to lay in our bed, he wants the light on, he wants me to lay with him.... He doesn't really try to get out of the crib, he flipped himself out once a few months ago (thank god he didn't get hurt!) and I think that he was so scared he never tried again! I'm wondering if he would do better in a "big boy" bed or if that would just make things worse since he won't be contained! Just curious as to how you knew it was time.

DS stopped sleeping in his bed in July (3 months before his 3rd birthday). It was a nightmare...I just gave in and let him sleep in my bed. I took the side off of his crib and he refused to sleep in it. So I put his mattress on the floor in his room and put a rail on it, he slept in it...Then he took to the twin bed in the guest room.. Now he falls asleep most nights in his fire truck bed. Some nights I still have to lay with him, but he usually falls asleep in less then 10 minutes.
He never tried to climb out of the crib and he never fell out of it. One day he decided that was enough! It may be time with your son too..

We took DS out at around 20 months. He was trying to climbing out and actually succeeded once, hitting his head on the way down. We got him a twin size bed thinking it would last longer than a toddler bed. He has done really well in it, actually sleeps better than in the crib.

We switched DS when he was 25 months old after he jumped out of his crib and slightly fractured his wrist. He was in a cast for 6 weeks.

ETA - we had no issues with him getting out of his bed until a couple of weeks ago. DS will be 4 next week and for the last couple weeks he has been getting out of his bed at bedtime and jumping around his room and then ends up staying up an hour or two later than he normally does. It's been driving me crazy!!!Chat Icon

I took the front of h crib off at 3 years old. I probably would have let him stay in there longer but we are working on potty training. Since we took the front off he wakes up much earlier than normal and his new thing is to sneak into my bed at night.

We are going through the same thing. Dd is2 1/2 and has been having such a hard time at night for 2 weeks now. She will scream for over an hour. We go in and out but every time we leave she starts up again.
Part of me wants to put the toddler rail up part of me thinks she'll be going crazy in and out right now. I don't know what to do.

As I return from my 10th trip upstairs to put my 2yo back down for her nap, I say wait until you HAVE to! She started climbing (more like launching herself) out of the crib so I had no choice Chat Icon

My nieces are 2 1/2 years old and my SIL switched them to toddler beds when one of my nieces climbed out of her crib by herself. The next day she converted their cribs to toddler beds.

I was hoping to try the switch this weekend to see how it would go, but it seems most guard rails need to be orderedChat Icon I ended up just ordering the piece that goes with his convertible crib, but it's probably going to take weeks to arrive errr Chat Icon

in the meatime you could see if any dollar stores or other places still have pool noodles. put it under the fitted sheet to create a bump to prevent your child from rolling off the bed

She was just over 2 and we knew because she loved laying in our bed and could get into it. We set the toddler bed up next to her crib just incase and brought her in to her room. She took 1 look at her new bed and ran to it, climbed in, and said good night. She played in it for the rest of the day and that night we did bath, books, and then new bed. She slipped out once that first night and was in a praying position sleeping lol. That was the only night it happened and it's been 10 months. She is now asking for a big bed so we are getting her a twin bed. The toddler bed doesn't have rails, but for the twin I will do a pool noodle on both sides. It seems to work fine. She is so excited for a big girl bed!
The next day we sadi good bye to the crib and she was fine with it. So my suggestion is keep the crib up for a few nights. If you need to you can just lay the mattress back in it.
